What's weirder still is that right footed players who never kick on their left are rarely if ever held to the same standard.
My problem is that Polec tries to swing back onto his left instead of handballing...

No it doesnt. People misconstrue Kens comment as meaning Frampton isnt ready to play at any stage this year.

He means he is not ready to play this week. Framptons rucking what...35% of sanfl games at the moment and people expect him to come in and ruck 100% of an AFL game?

Ni but we could share it 50/50 with Dixon, the Charlie do the majority of the centre square work and Frampton can do most of the work around the ground with Dixon and Westhoff providing relief

Who said 100%? We're currently dividing it up between Dixon, Howard and Westhoff. I wouldn't expect Frampton to carry that load himself.

Then what's the point of picking him? A 40% TOG Frampton would be about as useful as a digital membership for an AFL club.

I was sitting in Level 3 and saw after a number of turnovers that they had two or three guys between the goals and our last defender. We “didn’t work hard enough” for real this time and I think it was only through Essendon’s incompetence that they didn’t capitalise on this more.

The loss feels bigger than 20-odd points because a better side would’ve flayed us by 10+ goals.

Nah. Essendon are notorious front runners, literally and figuratively. We actually defended them OK given the numbers they push forward and the fact we handicapped ourselves by plaing Howard in the ruck for most of the game.

The problem was that we didn't attack the game the way we needed to if we wanted to win an Etihad shootout with Essendon. We hit the boundary, played for stoppages, and then when we did open up opportunities, we torched them.

How many times did we fail to force a stoppage, especially hard against the boundary, and then when we did, they waltzed it away like the Globetrotters anyway.

It was just so inept, in the purest sense.

It has been mentioned many times before but the rock lobster was the last ruckman standing when he was promoted to the Power line up.

He was playing for westies at the time, after being given the dcm from the Maggies by Timmy G.
The game against the blue baggers at unley oval was televised and Lobbe was absolutely dreadful, I doubt he touched the footy any more than 8-10 times in that game, and was almost certainly headed for delist ville. Dean Brogan got injured, Lobbe was chosen out of absolute necessity and performed admirably.

So FFS Kern stop f****** with the forward and defensive structures and give Frampton a go!

yikes, marshall delayed concussion and both dixon and wingard sporting broken noses!

What will the MRO say about the blokes who hit them and putting their hands down in the contest?

No we were lazy. Lazy getting back, lazy cutting off options, lazy creating our own options. I had a great view of the entire oval and could see us getting caught out before it happened on many occasions.

Didn't we used to be the fast ball mover team?

Yep. Back in 2013/2014. Remember Ken's mantra of 'brave football'? Remember how we'd chop teams up through the corridor, out wide, over the top, wherever there was space? Remember how it dragged us from the foot of the table into finals and then got us to within 3 points of a grand final appearance?

Then, starting round one 2015, we bizarrely changed tact, becoming a slow ball movement, stoppage based football team. We went from Bomber Thompson to Mick Malthouse overnight. And look at the success it's brought us.

The first two weeks of 2016, when St Kilda and Adelaide kicked roughly 25 half-the-field length joe the goose goals between them. And Trengove and/or Carlile admitted they didn't really know what they were doing.

And the architects of that masterstroke aren't just still there, they'll be there into the 2020's. Haha.

and we still don't in 2018.

How many years and changes of players does it take to learn the gameplan. Must be seriously complex. Is it like a Bachelor Degree?

Even the Vic Commentators were squealing with delight at our play on at all costs exciting game plan...

Blighty ,I think it was , even said Port had reinvigorated his love of football because of our attractive fast game plan haha

Nek Minit..

Boak is averaging 22 touches and over a goal a game, is 3rd on our goalkicking, 2nd for goal assists, 2nd for score involvements, 2nd for inside 50s. He can't really do much more than he's doing in a high half forward role. Are people expecting him to be a 4 goal a game player?
I enjoy your opinions macca.. you are great on here but Boaks first half was woeful. He is suppossed to show the troops how its done. Not sure he is the best choice for that role forward. He is much better in the centre. Put Lindsay Thomas there instead. Apart from Sydney game where he played quite well the Boak as a forward experiment is a failure in my eyes

Hawkins has kicked 4.
Stanley, Ratugolea 3.
Zac Smith 1.

if you think we are bringing in another key defender you are dreaming. We always try to get away with as few as possible, rather than try to take advantage of another sides inadequacies.
We had a nice structure round 1, but by round 6 will probably have 7 back flankers again. Reversion to our mean.

Also related to the story of Lobbe's emergence, it raises an eyebrow that Bowen Lockwood's injury-destroyed potential is still bemoaned 20 years on, but the similar destruction of Jarrad Redden is all but forgotten, bar his ill-fated last hurrah at Farrispalooza.

That guy had everything.

Huge size (205cms), good ruck craft, and was a genuine presence with his marking around the ground and could more than hold his own up forward. It's so easy to forget that as a 22yo with just the 9 games under his belt he was our #1 ruck at the beginning of the Hinkley era.

The 'could have been anything' tag is thrown around far too easily, but in Redden's case it was gilded.

So we stunk, I mean really stunk. I reckon only Gray, Wines, Polec and Jonas were good. Essendon kicked goals out of their A-holes, their mis-kicks hit targets and we lost by 4 goals. Wow, Essendon are really bad.

I was disappointed to see Barry dropped and would have him in ahead of Amon. Amon is clean and his DE is good, but he's just so blah. He's not quick, he's not strong, and his kick lacks penetration...he's just got no hurt factor.

Houston or Byrne-Jones need to make way for Pittard. Both have been less-than-average the past 2 weeks.

The worst part about the loss, is we all knew it was going to happen. Sad.

We went into 2018 with only one AFL ready ruckman. We should have made an effort to keep Trengove if we knew Frampton was not going to be up to it. We traded Lobbe and recruited in small guys like Trengove MkII and Thomas instead of a tall which meant Ryder had to stay fit. In the eyes of many that is poor list management.

It is not as if there wasn't precedent. In 2016 we lost Ryder then Lobbe and in 2017 WCE lost Naitanui then Lycett. To use Ken's own words, 'we dodged a bullet' in 2016 and last year WCE were able to draw on Nathan Vardy who they recruited from Geelong. We learned nothing from those experiences and that is poor management.

I love charlie but why cant he friggin kick it over the man on the mark when shooting for goal? Why cant Ollie convert easy shots for goal. Ditto robbie, chad and westhoff. I have zero confidence when we have simple shots. Surely someone can give the players a simple routine so they dont habitually choke.

I think we lost the game in the first five minutes. Poor intensity, scorebosrd pressure and then choked into fumletown.
Could be he is stuffed after rucking.;)

Yep, no argument from me re Redden, I can still remember his Lade like palm down from just outside the goal square against the blue baggers that resulted in an easy walk in goal to Port. :thumbsu:
