unfortunately collingwood have chosen (thru eddie...) to walk away from their roots, so a game at vic park is just a meaningless gesture porthos.

vic park doesnt mean anything to them anymore....

All the more reason to figh against wearing an alternitive jumper. The only roots we want to maintain and the man says we can't.

You left your SANFL Heritage. What's the difference between leaving the SANFL where you played for so many years winning so very many SANFL premierships and wearing your beloved Magpies Gurensey to walk away and join the AFL? To become "the Power" (a name suited better to the A-league)and wear teal?

Enough of this Saints and Geelong nonsense, let get on with the real issues affecting every football fan.

My position is that Port is the better club.

Port’s history is mostly associated with one of the small regional competitions. Perhaps a better comparison would be Port Adelaide V Port Melbourne. :)

"It will be the first chance to see the Power players in the 'very first' guernsey, the replica 1870 blue and white guernsey which the Power will wear for Saturday night's Showdown."

Port Adelaide Football Club is not only one of the oldest sporting clubs in Australia, it also predates clubs such as Manchester United and the Chicago Cubs, as well as some internationally popular sports such as basketball. The club was founded on 20 April 1870 and played its inaugural match on 24 May 1870 at Buck's Flat, Glanville.

Based in the western suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia, Port Adelaide Football Club derived its name from the Port Adelaide area in which it is situated. It developed a strong following amongst the working-class denizens of the western suburbs and a fierce rivalry with the wealthier clubs of Adelaide's east and south. It also became one of the most successful clubs of its type in the nation, with a record 34 SANFL premierships and four "Champions of Australia" titles, as well as producing some of the all-time greats of Australian rules football, including Russell Ebert, Craig Bradley and Gavin Wanganeen.

Known as the Magpies until 1996, the club changed its nickname to the Power as a condition of entry to the AFL,...

Deadly low blow, to all the doubters :D

Dont get me wrong I "Hate" Collingwood with a passion, but that is because of a long Histroy/Rivalry between us. And it is allways something that gives me great pleasure when we spank them.

How can I say that about a club that has been around 9 years.

No matter how much I hate to say it - Collingwood wins this one.

You Port supporters crack me up with all your defensive dribble. :D

The clubs and leagues The modern day (Click link for more info and facts about Australian Football League) Australian Football League (AFL) has many teams dating back to the beginnings of the game: apart from the Melbourne Football Club, other early clubs still in existence include: (Click link for more info and facts about Geelong) Geelong (1860), (Click link for more info and facts about Carlton) Carlton (1864), North Melbourne (aka Hotham, now (Any of several herbivorous leaping marsupials of Australia and New Guinea having large powerful hind legs and a long thick tail) Kangaroos) (1869), (Click link for more info and facts about Port Adelaide) Port Adelaide (1870), (Click link for more info and facts about Essendon) Essendon and (Click link for more info and facts about St Kilda) St Kilda (1873), South Melbourne (now (Click link for more info and facts about Sydney Swans) Sydney Swans) (1874) and Footscray (now the (Click link for more info and facts about Western Bulldogs) Western Bulldogs) (1877).

In 1877, the (Click link for more info and facts about Victorian Football Association) Victorian Football Association (VFA), the game's first league, was formed by 14 clubs: Albert Park, Ballarat, Barwon, Beechworth, Carlton, Castlemaine, East Melbourne, Essendon, Geelong, Hotham (later North Melbourne), Inglewood, Melbourne, Rochester and St Kilda. Six of these clubs were from the Victorian country. At the time, Essendon was regarded as a semi-junior club rather than a full member, and was allowed concessions such as fielding teams of 25 players, instead of the standard 20.

Gradually the game spread from Victoria into other Australian colonies, especially South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia, all of which had strong, separate leagues by the 1890s, in particular the (Click link for more info and facts about South Australian National Football League) South Australian National Football League (SANFL) and the (Click link for more info and facts about Western Australian Football League) Western Australian Football League (WAFL). Meanwhile, a rift in the VFA led to the formation of the (Click link for more info and facts about Victorian Football League) Victorian Football League (VFL), which commenced play in 1897 as an eight-team breakaway of the stronger clubs in the VFA competition: Carlton, (Click link for more info and facts about Collingwood) Collingwood, Essendon, (Click link for more info and facts about Fitzroy) Fitzroy, Geelong, Melbourne, St Kilda and South Melbourne.

Another five VFA clubs joined the VFL later: (Capital of the state of Virginia located in the east central part of the state; was capital of the Confederacy during the American Civil War) Richmond and (Establishment where a seat of higher learning is housed, including administrative and living quarters as well as facilities for research and teaching) University joined the VFL in 1908, although University withdrew in 1915. Footscray, (A spring-flowering shrub or small tree of the genus Crataegus) Hawthorn and North Melbourne joined in 1925, by which time VFL had become the most prominent league in the game. In 1982 the VFL would evolve into the AFL.

For much of the (Click link for more info and facts about 20th century) 20th century the SANFL and the WAFL were considered peers of the VFL. Although the VFL was generally accepted as the strongest league, clubs from all three leagues frequently played each other on an even footing in challenge matches and occasional nationwide club competitions.

It is written somewhere.... That the Victorian Clubs travelled either to Adelaide or Perth most of the time to compete in these meaningless play offs. It was treated as a footy trip by the VFL premiers and the results show this.

I know that I am going off topic now, but it is the off-season after all. What I want to address is the descripition in your post of the Championship of Australia as a "meaningless" competition. There is plenty of eveidence from the newspapers of the time that it was, by and large, taken seriously. The newspapers in Victoria consistently described these games between 1888 and 1914 as being for the Championship or Premiership of Australia.
The following quote is taken from the Max Sayer book on this subject,"As the self-appointed custodial of thegame across Australia, it would be appropriate if the AFL were to recognise more records from the SANFL and WAFL in their historical yearbooks and popular publications. By 1991 the elite state leagues in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia had given way to a single national compteition which, although it eveloved from the VFL, had Adelaide and Perth based teams as an essential part of its national flavour..... Would it not be appropriate then if the AFL, recognised, maintained and published records from these state leagues for the years, at least, until the expansion of the VFL.... The Championship of Australia contests represent the earliest form of the Australian premiership, and it is only appropriate the the winners of such status should be forever rewarded with a place in the record books... Unless the AFL assumes the role of custodian of the game's history in its broadest national sense, and until it publishes nationally relevant history such as the first Australial club champions, the football public (with astute historians excepted) will never know the whole story."

...You're probably the only Port supporter I have ever argued this subject against that has actually taken the time to do some research on the subject, Count. I salute you. (Not quite enough, though - Collingwood wasn't founded in 1897, it was 1892. Still, you make a refreshing change from Ebert and his hilariously sad attempts at historical accuracy)

Of course, the book you quote is merely the writer's opinion, and I dare say the Victorian press were all too willing to spruik the "Championship" match if there was a Victorian team in it :p
Certainly by the modern era the Escort Cup had degenrated into a post-season bender for most clubs - and yet, I have a VFL/SANFL annual from 1981 that takes it deadly seriously.

My issue here was with the posting of your spin on the statistics as if that answers everything - as you can see, most of what you posted can be spun right back at ya :)

Anyway, the topic at hand here will always be a matter of opinion. My opinion is that Port's 34 premierships prove little but the lop-sidedness of the SANFL, it would be like Celtic or Rangers referring to themselves as The Most Successful Team In Britain. But, yeah, it's all subjective. Still Collingwood > Port for me though :p

Another question, which would you prefer, No testicles, or no penis? (if ur a man) Both such terrible options i couldn't choose.

Collingwood FC didn't have to apply to either the VFL in 1896 or the AFL in 1989 to gain entry.

Port had to apply in both 1990,s failed set up and 1995,s failed solo attempt.

Why do I include 1995 as a failure when you probably think you succeeded .... But lets look at one little thing first.

Who owns the 2nd AFL License in South Australia?

Port Adelaide don't! Do they.

Collingwood own their license to play in the AFL.

I think we have a winner.
