No one's saying you can't. There's also no reason for GC to wear their away jumper as there's no clash.

That's pretty much it. Home team get to choose the home jumper so since Port bought that right then they can wear whatever they like. The only way they can force Gold Coast into a clash jumper is if they wear a one off "Chinese jumper" that is mostly red...otherwise the Suns get to wear their home jumper.I understand that the Port has bought the rights to the home game off Gold Coast.
But as far as I'm aware the AFL has always controlled the guernseys worn by the teams. The home team has never got to choose the oppositions' guernsey have they?
I thought it worked like this. If the away team's kit clashes with the home kit then the AFL dictates the away team where their clash guernsey. (And please don't respond to me asking about Collingwood's old clash policy )
So since there is no clash, it doesn't matter who the home team is. They wear the same playing kits if it is a Gold Coast or a Port home game. As they have done since Gold Coast's first season.
My guess is Kochie didn't realise that the home team doesn't pick the playing guernseys. So when he talks about the contract he's just talking about Port having control over the game like they would as if it was a home game. Its just a pity for him that no home team gets to control what the other team wears.
If there is anything wrong in this post please correct me. I could completely have messed this up, but it would explain I reckon why Kochie thought he could dictate Gold Coast to wear their clash.
Yes you wear your home colours and so do they as it isn't a clash. They wear their home colours against you in AdelaideWe essentially bought their home game for 500k, so that would mean that it's our home game, yes? So we should wear the home colours.
It's pretty ridiculous how it's all turned out anyway.
I think you are missing the point. We essentially bought their home game for 500k, so that would mean that it's our home game, yes? So we should wear the home colours.

Surely there is some sort of contract which says who wears what colours?

Exactly, it's not like Port have the wear their clash jumper every time they are the away team.I think you are missing the point.
Teams only wear a different jumper if it clashes with the home team. There is no clash between ports and suns, so no need for either team to wear their clash jumpers....
Pretty sure number 9 is san choi baoHave GCS considered a Garry Hocking-like temporary name change for GAblett for this game? Maybe something like, let's say Confucius, or Mao Zedong? Tie it in with their club colours, maybe a friendly Mandarin Chinese phrase on the banner, even if they only get a few hundred thousand members out of it, and generate a few million extra tourist visits to Qld, Kochie's head will explode...
And Port with black and white colours and a 10-year deal - they'd struggle to get support even if Taiwan was the opposition!
Its more than that, red is also considered a lucky colour. Black and white are considered unlucky. Anyone with the most rudimentary understanding of Chinese culture (particularly things they consider 'lucky') would have known that the one team strip you don't want playing against you is the Gold Coast one.If any Chinese viewers tune in they'll see one team wearing their countries colours, and the other dressed in black. It will appear symbolic, that one team has been cast as the heroes and the other villians.
Incredible set of mistakes that lead to this really.
Christ this is funny.
Master businessman Kochie has:
- tried to organise a home game in China, but somehow didn't realise what his contract with his home ground stipulated
- asked the AFL to save his deal by getting GC involved
- not realised until way too late the significance of the jumper colours
- bleated that there was an agreement to cover his incompetent ass, but then somehow neglected to have any actual contractual terms regarding it
What a titan of business he is. Every single stuff up is a failure of business 101.
LOL
AFL still controls who wears what jumpers and there is no clash and gold coast for administrative purposes are still the home team.Unlike "normal" H&A games, we've paid GC $500k for this game. So all of your examples & arguments about who/what club controls what under "normal" circumstances goes out the window.
And citation neededAlso as I've read elsewhere, the Chinese don't take kindly to white dudes running around wearing their national colours pretending to be Chinese..... it's going to do the GC brand more harm than good, especially if they lose.
