Autopsy Positives and Negatives vs Carlton

Teams have moved the ball through us too easily all year. We give up the 15 - 20m kick every time. Next thing we know they are delivering inside 50 and it so happens Carlton have a few players that can take a mark down there.

Compared to us, who's game plan seems to be kicking long down the line 50m and hoping for 3 contested pack marks in a row. But Williams and Nic can't mark, Darling gets doubled teamed and Kennedy (bless the man and put up a statue of him outside the ground) is pretty much cooked and can't really contribute much outside the 50m arc anymore.

The only person that occasionally ran into space was Waterman. Gaff doesn't do that anymore, the only running he does is backwards onto his left foot. I don't know what we would get for him anymore. A 3rd rounder and freeing up cap space. Take that deal with God and run (up that hill or road or whatever).

In a strange sense and despite the result, yesterday was the first time I felt truly encouraged West Coast may have young, AFL quality talent with Hough, Trew, Bazzo, Jones (he needs to stay on the HBF and encouraged to run and carry) and to an extent, Edwards showing glimpses.

A couple of others have said it, We don't appear to have any system. Unsure what to do, how to advance the ball to our forwards. We seem unfit but is this just that we are unsure of our role ? I normally like to see the positives but this is probably equally if not worse than any time in the clubs existence . Maybe a bit dramatic, just how I see it.

I am not sure where these kudos for Edwards are coming from

The kid isn't quick, yet spent the better part of the day trailing 5-10m behind his direct opponent and wondering why he was continually getting beaten on the lead

Its really not that difficult. Defence 101. We expect him to make the occasional error on account of his lack of experience, but making the same fundamental error over and over again is simply not good enough

When a team is unsure, learning a new style / game plan, turns the ball over and chases tail for most of the day. They look unfit.

You waste a lot of energy when being inefficient and defending for most of the day.

Edwards can stand the bigger, slower ruck forwards but any big forward with a bit of pace and agility leaves him in the dust.

Not much to hang his hat on yesterday. He wasn't alone though.

Petch another hammy. So he is averaging about 2 hamstring injuries a year. He's not going to have a long career regardless of his form.

Unfortunate and terrible timing. Time to move him on, he has had what 5 years to develop? Another who looks lost and doesn't use his one real strength enough, his pace.

The recurring hamstring issues makes the decision easier.

Can you actually see what new game plan we are learning ? I haven't been to a game since before covid and it is impossible to see what is really happening on tv.

It isn't hard to see.

Instead of kicking long down the right wing every time out of defense we are trying to attack the corridor with run and overlap handball.

Instead of chipping the ball sideways across half back and then switching coming all the way back to where we started we are attacking the corridor with short kicks then overlap handball, run and carry.

On a couple of occasions it looks great. Unfortunately we are then turning it over too much and bleeding 6 goals a game due to poor execution.

Starting to feel I have a different view of footy than Adam Simpson. Found it interesting that he said the 1st quarter was the worst. To me that last quarter was the worst quarter of football I have had to sit through in a long time. Some of the stuff that was going like no run, missed tackles, defenders being led to the ball by their opponent on a lead, the 50 metre penalty for umpire disent was bottom team E grade amateur stuff. Whereas being blown away in 1st quarter can happen to any team at any time.

Also concerned that he thought Eagles were playing too fast in the 1st quarter. Jones running off the back line through the square is the one thing that excites me that we have a new game style and getting back to being competitive is going to happen sooner than later.

It annoys me what we served upped with Kennedys 700th career goal pending. We have a nasty habit of doing this is milestone moments of club legends

Sydney wouldn't have served that up in liu of Buddys 1000th, but somehow out senior players and coaching staff couldn't get the boys up for the fight in the first quarter?

And don't even get me started on Hurns 300th, i am still filthy about what we served up that day

For me, the last quarter was a team that dropped its bundle and completely ran out of gas after the Blues scored a few early ones. Speaks to bad fitness and a change of mindset needed, yes, but teams that completely blow up and can’t run out games can happen when you’ve spent all your tickets chasing a lead down.

I agree with Simmo that Q1 was much more disappointing. You can’t come out, on the back of some decent form no less, and just roll over like that to start a game. Smacked at the contest, something like 25-2 inside 50s, for the life of me I cannot recall a single possession we had inside fifty in the first term either. Closest we got was a pack mark situation that we got hands to.

That’s a game killer. We did well to even get it back to a remotely close scoreline for half time, given we just gave them a free thirty minute head start.

If we’d been even remotely competent and just ticked over two or three goals in Q1, the entire game could have played out so differently and I seriously doubt they let go of the rope that badly late on. The first quarter was the one for me.

Yes I see a bit of corridor stuff, mainly from jones coming out of the back half, other than that it's kick it down the right wing every time. Most sides do what we used to call "hunting in packs" we don't appear to do it or are not very good at it. Maybe not fit enough to continue a whole game doing it ? I have no idea.

We are just learning the hunting in packs style.

Slowly. ;) :$

There was no doubt with Yeo out the Eagles were missing the class to quickly move the ball out of defence. The movement out of the corridor yesterday was like a bad game of ninja warrior.

At least the club are trying new things, they need to know who is capable of playing a new style and who isn't.

Watching Kelly getting out marked and outplayed by Cripps stood out at times. We didnt have a single mid who could match Cripps physically.

Hopefully next time Culley and Clark are playing to give us someone closer to his size. Our midfield just are too small and lack combative traits. We litterally get smashed by bigger midfields.
Most mids in the competition are not able to compete with Cripps. He is a beast. Clark did not fire a shot when he came on in the last quarter, but he can be forgiven because he had little time to get into the game and has only played a handful of games. I’m not sure that Clark is the answer though, looks outclassed.

It was like a party you don't want to go to but have to.
Late to turn up and early to leave.

Obviously we are implementing a new game style which uses the corridor more. I personally liked how JJ went about taking the game on and providing a running option. A few players took it on with passes which didn't always work out and led directly to goals but that is the price you pay for using the corridor.

Our year is gone so why not experiment and practice it now, if we lose so be it we just get better draft picks. We can't be called tankers as we are having a crack and trying new players with a new game plan.

Clark played on Cripps in the last quarter and got destroyed.

Disagree. There were some dumb attempts at fast play in the first quarter that resulted in turnovers and goals. It’s good to look to go faster and through the corridor but you’ve got to be smart about when you do it and read the game situation. A team has to be able to go through the gears and read the game situation. We didn’t do that in the first quarter yesterday.

Our players don't appear to work for each other and it's a combination of fitness, attitude and coaching. The rot is pretty deeply entrenched now which is the biggest concern and our leadership stocks on-field are basically exhausted.

We have really missed Oscar as a standard setter for our younger cadre IMO.

Tough coming in cold in the last when theteam is out of gas.

I am not convinced with Clark yet either. Feel he may be a yard or two of pace off AFL standard. In close you need agility which Clark lacks. Our last Brownlow winner wasnt fast either and I can see better physical attributes in Clark over Priddis.

Culley reportedly has a bit more pace, closer to Cripps level than Clark.

Spot on.

It was bull at a gate stuff that on several occasions lacked any poise.

Sure we gained experience on how not to do it. Players running to support the ball carrier or block needs work.
