Autopsy Positives and Negatives vs Carlton

Big Harry. He is too slow for the calibre of forwards playing AFL these days. All he has got going for him is height.

Thing is, who is advising this kid? Barrass? It was like deja vu watching Edwards trail 5 meters behind his opponent and either get outright beaten on the lead, or try to body spoil at the last minute. Barrass did the exact same thing in the Essendon game and got well beaten early by a similarly gangly opponent.

Its really not hard, he either needs to stay directly next to his opponent and maintain body contact, or try to play in front.

If we can all see this, what are our backline coaches doing?

You are right. And it looks as if we are trying too hard to generate run and carry, overlap handball to break the defensive line.

It was like watching Witherden have his laser like kicking talked up as what we need and then watching one or two good kicks be undone with half a dozen shockers that create turnovers and easy goals.

I encourage the effort but Im not sure Jones has the temperament to play defense. He loses his cool and then takes on more than he is capable, makes poor decisions. It is obvious we are trying players in new positions Im just not sure Jones is up to it.

I'd rather see him forward of centre.

Eric McKenzie used to be the best Eagle until he actually got the ball, then it was cover the eyes on what the hell he was going to do.
I feel the same angst whenever Harry get possession, but he also has some mates who do brilliantly to get it then stuff it up.
is that the game plan or panic then causes this?
I actually rate Harry's disposal as pretty good. But he's been playing gun shy, afraid of making a mistake. McKenzie was poor by foot and he knew it.

Here's my issue with Jones. He is exactly the right type of player we want for a half back with his attacking run but im not sure we will ever be able to trust in his kicking and recklessness.

Almost the prototype of showing us what we need but at a significantly higher level. Yeo on HB makes a great case. He looks to take it on, isn't a magnificent kick but is a very long, penetrating kick. So you have 1 HB position filled. Cole to hopefully come back into the side next year as the lockdown small defender and then we need a run, carry and good kick defender. Hopefully with a good preseason Chesser could be that guy. I would prefer to keep Hough on one wing and Sheed on the other next year than bring chesser straight in as a mid.

I also despise that Gaff is not only being paid what he is but his play style has been rendered useless by the changes to the rules and game. I would be happy if he was to finish his career over east with us paying half his salary. We might be able to package that up with our third to get a second rounder (preferably next year) at best. Go to north or whomever and finish his career there. Even under the same scenario to North in particular with none of our picks headed that way their future third.

There is going to be a lot of father sons and academy picks next year and some are really looking the goods. Adding points to our draft pool next year could be of real significance in our draft hand.

s**t even if he comes good for another team for a couple of years I'm still all for it as he may be of use to another side but is of very little to ours. Even if it's just adding 400k into our salary cap each year for those two years we can bring other player payments forward and then really go hard at a free agent over the next 2 years.

At the rate we are going....we might need Gaff's salary to pad out the cap....

A commentatot mentioned we were playing our zone style defense but we werent being accounatable enough for it to work.

At one stage he was standing 5m in front of his opponent with his back to the play. Was easily side stepped, turned like the Titanic and watched his man mark unopposed.

Our defenders stood up pretty well for three quarters. game over after that. Harry got a schooling again but showed great character to hang in and take contested marks late. He and Basso will be ok (I think). Sadly I think we need Hurn to stay on for another season. While slowing he is the leader we need down there and gives grunt.
Our mids were hopelessly outclassed. As a result our backs were under the pump and our forwards had to scrap a kick or two. Clarke got a lesson from Cripps but he isnt in that class and was in a mid team that had capitulated while Cripps had the benifit of a dominant ruck and being surrounded by champions on fire. I think he still adds something while we rebuild (3-4 years).
Generally we played well for 30-40 minutes but were physically and mentally incapable of doing more. S&C come on down.
Ryan has been criticised, that he isnt fit enough is a given, but how often was he the overhead contested target out gunned 3 to one. He isnt a big player but kept contesting in a role unsuited to his phsical capabilities. Who was he covering for??
Similarly Gaff was inside blocking with and taking body hits all day leaving Shuey and coy to play outside to give us some attack. He is unreasonably criticised.

Pretty difficult when the ball came in so quickly

Personally I would have had major problems buying into an obviously redundant game plan.

We are not allowed to play the web as every club has discovered a work around.

Negative: I had to run an errand during the game between quarter time and the middle of the third quarter, so I missed us scoring all of our points.
Also negative: I got to watch a replay at the pub last night, starting just after we'd scored our final point for the game.

I was disappointed that Fisher got away with diving all day , Jonesy let him know and gave away a 50 m penalty but the game was a shambles by that stage ..

Got screamed at and copped the most ‘you wanna fight’ energy I’ve ever been on the receiving end of at the footy after calling Fisher a diver in the fourth term.

Carlton fan there with his kid who couldn’t have been older than six or seven, and the kid got really scared when his dad screamed over him to hurl shit at me about four rows away. Was a fun moment in a shit quarter, properly funny, father of the year ladies and gentlemen.

Writing was on the wall with him when JK had his goal taken away on review, then Carlton moments later walked into an open goal uncontested and I called for them to review it. He didn’t appreciate that one bit.

Probably the same type of guy who thinks Greg Williams was the type who deserved a Brownlow after all the shit he pulled back in the day, especially to Chris Lewis.

I despise old-school Carlton fans. Pure bogan trash.

There were some salty, salty baggers there on Sunday. Really desperate to see their shit team finally beat us after 8 years.
