Autopsy Positives and Negatives vs Carlton

We are coached abysmally.

We are coached abysmally because our players, by and large, fall well below AFL fitness standards.

I anticipated we would lose by 6-8 goals and I'm still disappointed in what the side served up.

Just gormless viewing.

Really feels like we are in a death spiral that won't be arrested until a broom goes through all levels of the club.

If they can't make some hard calls over the off season we are in for a decade of pain.
Who makes the hard calls ?

The same people who need the hard calls been made on them !

In my mind, bit of everything. I don’t think you can undersell the impact of injuries and Covid on derailing our preseason and destroying their initial fitness base, but then who is in charge of preventing those things cropping up. Soft tissue injuries and hot spot in the foot injuries have been a prevalent theme for four years now.

This is up there with sack the coach or kick it forward for BigFooty cop out solutions, but it does appear time that our S+C department gets a thorough review.
Agree with all of this but I also think the club seriously needs to go about addressing some mental/attitude issues at the club as well.

Even when we were at our best we were the flat track bullies that would wilt against a lot of challenges or a drop of rain.

We need 18 players on the field willing to push at all times for a sustained four quarter period to be competitive. I can’t remember the last four quarter effort we put in and for far too long we’ve been a team looking for someone like a JK or Nic Nat to to the incredible things required to win it for us.

It’s on you guys to win your ball, beat your opponent, halve your contests so let’s see it for a whole game.

Carlton are a good team, we are not. It is what it is.

Hough, Bazzo, Jones among others continue to show promise. I haven't seen NN play that badly for a long time but it guess it make sense in some ways as it was the second game back.

Negatives

First quarter same as last week only worse.

Nick off from the start, I expected a quieter game second week back. He was beaten from the start.

Our midfield just does not have enough talent right now.

Ryan needs a rest or time in the WAFL just lacking touch and confidence.

Positives

Harry Edward's did some good thing's and got beaten sometimes that's okay given his age and experience.

Basso showed some pace.

Hough did some nice things as well.

Pick 2 in the AFL draft seems a lock.

Would like to see XON in next week.

Just no.

Carlton are mid-table battlers. They are not a good side by any stretch.

They are just a shit load better than us.

Our firsts would struggle to be competitive, let alone dominant, at WAFL level

Again, he's 21. Calm down, KP take a while. Most dont even play when their 21 and if they do their a top 10 pick...
Does anyone remember Darren Glass' first few seasons. Trent Carol looked the much better option, and was a crab himself. Same with Mackenzie and most other key defenders that come through the system. People just need to back off the kid and let him develop.

Second quarter a positive
Our effort was good
Hough , Bazzo tiring but still good signs
H Edwards having tough tasks but did some good things
B Williams good leap and improving
Waterman played well but faded .

Negative - Noncompetitive first quarter, we were steamrolled.

Team tired whether it's motivation or fitness or both .

We're looking forward to season end ...it's been tough .

Our zone continues to be embarrassing.

I don't know why teams don't just play possession football against us for 4 quarters. Boring, but you conserve energy and get kicks inside 50 under no pressure at will.

Not that they were individually great but I feel for Edwards and Barrass. What's that? We're up against the 2021 Coleman Medalist and the 2022 clubhouse leader? Let's give them space to lead into from the goal square to... the horizon. And not pressure the ball carrier.

I don't mind so much if he's out marked, outpositioned or loses a contest of strength because he's 21 and still developing. I do mind when he repeatedly doesn't even make it to the marking contest because he's playing so far behind. Not because another forward blocks his run, but because he seems to think he can always make that space up despite repeatedly being shown otherwise. I worry that as an overgrown midfielder, he doesn't actually have any defensive instincts and was just put back because he got too tall to be a midfielder and was a reasonable intercepter.

As I said, he was better on the occasions when he was side by side with Curnow. I just want to see him recognise that at some point during the game and stop hanging back. Or maybe past captain Hurn or popular choice for next captain Barrass or the backline coach or one of the many old boys we've hired as development coaches can point it out to him.

we've been sucked in by JJ's run, but gee is an average footballer....turnover merchant.

How many goals did he cost the team? Two high tackles and at least two horrid turnovers resulting in soft easy goals.

With the attack and run off half back it looks forced / rushed.

Jones and Petruccelle need to be delivering more to get one.

Jones is playing half back because none of our other half backs do anything. Witherden is a supposedly elite ball user and turns the ball over. Rotham has become a deer in headlights. Duggan has played 130 games and is going backwards.

I'd much rather see Jones turn the ball over with run and carry than watch our senior players turn the ball over kicking 20m sideways.

There was a passage of play in the first quarter where Jones ended up being caught in the centre which led to a goal to the Blues. In the lead up Gaff marked at half back, stopped, turned around and went 20m backwards. No movement up the ground, no penetration to kick long and no confidence to run and create.

There was another passage (third quarter I think, we were kicking left of screen) where Darling presented and marked between wing and HB. He then passed 20m, ran to half forward and presented and marked again between wing and HF. WTF are our half forwards and mids doing? Our run and spread is garbage.

Positives:
  • Quarters 2 and 3
  • JK 700
  • Jubilant Masto
  • Shannon Hurn
  • Some of H.Edwards' marking
  • SPS did okay
  • Jakey kicking some good goals
  • That one rioli goal

Negatives:
  • L. Ryan
  • Trew disappearing after a good outing
  • Some of H.Edwards' decision making
  • JJ Turnovers
  • Team defence (particularly the mids)
  • General defensive running
  • Petch continues to show very little

One thing that really hit me watching this game, is our midfield is now completely cooked. Shuey and Redden are past it and may be able to eke 1 more season out as B grade role players at best. Yeo's body has failed him and we all cross fingers and hope he can get fit and at best kill it off half back. Kelly is the best of the lot but is not an A grade onballer.

If a miracle happens and we start next season with a fit and firing squad (with our best 22 on the field) our forward line and defence will look good. Our midfield won't improve much, as all we have missing currently is Sheed. The only way to improve it is via the draft (would take 2 or 3 seasons for players to get enough experience) or trade.

If the draft is as weak as some are saying, then the classic deven robertson, Tanner Bruhn type trade is something we desperately need to nail. Baker from Richmond is not the answer either as he's far too small to lead a midfield (and is arguably not skilled enough either).

I was hoping we might bounce back to mid table next year, but it's probably better that we have another season or two in the bottom 4, so we can find the midfield talent we desperately need.

Our game plan is non existent and the team is completely disjointed.
There is no natural football flare and the players look lost and confused and are afraid to make mistakes. They stop, pause and actively look to be thinking wtf they should be doing and telegraphing how clueless they are. So they do this and then totally sell teammates into trouble time and time again.
Whatever the plan is, it ****en sucks, so may as well just scrap it and tell them to go out and play footy for the rest of the year, as this needs a complete rewrite and training over summer

While we had 2 good quarters, our opening and final quarters were terrible. Even the 2 good quarters highlighted why we are likely to be not contending for 3 years.

Without the ball
We are still guarding space and our zone defence is a joke. Simmo got the applause for the web but it is now outdated and has been countered. Is he that stubborn or is he struggling to find a new way? This guarding space happens all over the field.

With the ball
A few players are trying to take on the contest (Hough, SPS, Shuey, Jones) but there are way too many that are uncomfortable with it and lack confidence. Gaff is really bad in slow play and his kicks around corners are a liability. He and others hesitate meaning the ball is late getting to the lead!!! Gaff is not alone - Waterman, Hurn, Barrass, Duggan, Foley, Redden, etc

Our approach from kick ins are a disaster. The usual is Hurn kicks in and our 2 KPD are located in the left and right pockets unmanned. Either bomb it Ling right or lay off to a pocket!

The pace that Carlton got the ball inside 50 highlighted how much easier life is for KPF when the game flows. Edwards and Barrass were always going to struggle when a forward gets that clean a service.

We bring selective pressure. Effort seems conditional and not instinctive. Hence horrid run-ons against us and our leaders on field cannot adjust on the run

It is going to be a tough 2 to 3 years. I wonder who is having the open and tough conversations with the senior coach! We have had an attitudinal problem since 2020. Simmo claims it’s been addressed. I suspect it been discussed but it is fundamentally still at the club and our coach looks to be more part of the problem that part of the solution.

We didn’t score a SINGLE POINT after JK kicked his 700th WC goal, that was with 14:07 left in the third. That is diabolically bad…

Reckon we’re still a still a sniff for pick 1 on that display yesterday, surely North have it in them to steal one more win along the way

You are right. And it looks as if we are trying too hard to generate run and carry, overlap handball to break the defensive line.

It was like watching Witherden have his laser like kicking talked up as what we need and then watching one or two good kicks be undone with half a dozen shockers that create turnovers and easy goals.

I encourage the effort but Im not sure Jones has the temperament to play defense. He loses his cool and then takes on more than he is capable, makes poor decisions. It is obvious we are trying players in new positions Im just not sure Jones is up to it.

I would not be using these last games too much to judge how we will look next year. It is obvious we are basically in full development mode and the score board or wins are not the top priority. We are trialling players in different positions. Playing kids to see if we retain them or let them go.

And as someone else posted JK kicks his 700th and we didnt score for more than a quarter. Sneaky chance to still get pick 1.

A third of that side wont play round 1 next year. Lets wait and judge how our future looks at say round 6 next season.

Watching Kelly getting out marked and outplayed by Cripps stood out at times. We didnt have a single mid who could match Cripps physically.

Hopefully next time Culley and Clark are playing to give us someone closer to his size. Our midfield just are too small and lack combative traits. We litterally get smashed by bigger midfields.
