I personally think Gunston should have retired myself. As cooked as Triggering Tiger being a relevant Bay poster.

1.6 goals per game. Hardly world beating stuff, and a long way from his best, but 29 goals from 18 games as a cooked forward is not a bad return, but the true ROI is the impact on the younger players. While the game has moved on a long way since 2015, and Mitchell's game plan is very different to Clarko's, having a couple of players in Gunston and Breust who know what it takes to be the best is important for a young group.

Exactly; despite having a good season, all parties know the cliff for a player like Gunston will be upon him quite quickly. His value now is as an onfield coach and off field mentor to guys like Calshear Dear. While his playing worth is only going to diminish, it's what he contributes to the younger forwards that is the pay-off for the investment.

Indeed. The idea does have its merits too.. I mean that’s why he came up to Brisbane, it’s just a shame it didn’t work out for him up here. Plus as a rookie he wouldn’t be getting paid much so it wouldn’t affect the salary cap too much.
