From the reports i am reading, Matt Jones would have to be a lock for starting 22.. Would that be a fair assumption?
He'll go close that's for sure. Love what I'm hearing about him so far.

From what I've seen Tynan reminds me a hell of a lot like Clint Bartram. Great lock down player with very average skills. Reckon there are still a few ahead of him, but I do like the kid and the way he approaches it.
Bit rough on him there CBH. From the glimpses we've seen I wouldn't have described his skills as very average. In saying that I agree he could slot into the lock down defensive role very nicely. I'd have no qualms in seeing him start in Round 1 though I think it's unlikely considering the (refreshing) competition for spots down back.

Mine as follows:

Garland Frawley Tynan
Watts McDonald Terlich
Grimes Trengove Sylvia
Blease Clark Howe
Byrnes Dawes Pederson

R: Jamar N jones Viney

Int: Toumpas, McKenzie, Davey Rodan (sub)

Emerg: Tapscott, Strauss, M Jones, Dunn, Taggert, Jetta

Trying not to think about the likely absence of Mitch and Trenners right now.

Clark and Trengove will not be ready for round 1. I think that Trengove should be given a proper pre-season, as he has been injured the last 2. Clark is coming from a long way back, so would rather let him take his time.

So here is how i feel that they will line up..

FB:Garland Frawley Strauss
HB:Watts McDonald Nicholson
C: Grimes Rodan Blease
HF: Byrnes Pederson Howe
FF: Dunn Dawes Davey
R: Jamar N jones Sylvia
Int: Toumpas, McKenzie, Viney Tapscott (sub)

Emerg: Taggert, Jetta, M Jones.

All the form has to be with the guys setting the standard, whilst i havent been to training all the reports are that guys like; McDonald, Nicholson, Jones, Grimes, Dunn, Davey, Rodan are setting the pace so these guys should be rewarded round 1.
Matt Jones is a bit unlucky with Jetta, but this is why we are going to be vastly better side this year, because we finally have depth and competiton for spots.
Special mention to Dunn, who i feel will go forward for the first 3 games as we really dont have a spot for him in the back 6, with Watts, who will be crucial to setting up play.
Viney and Toumpas to both get a slow introduction to round 1, neither will play in the middle, Toumpas to switch with Strauss and Viney to rotate through the forwards.

Not too sure how close i will be or whether i am missing some players, but putting together this list is certainly better than last year, when you pick the best 18 and then just fill the gaps with reserve players.

I've heard very favourable things about this him as well.

Interesting times ahead :)

Right, time to give this a crack.

B: Jetta Frawley Garland
HB: Watts TMac Strauss
C: Grimes N.Jones Blease
HF: Howe Pedersen Sylvia
F: Davey Dawes Byrnes
Fol: Jamar Viney Trengove
Int: McKenzie Tapscott Rodan (Toumpas)

In contention: M.Jones Terlich Spencer Fitzpatrick Taggert

No Clark because I don't think he'll be ready to go :(

Not far off the mark Striker475. Like the look of the forward line and our midfield is pretty much spot on if everyone stays fit, although I still think Trengove will be doing very well to play Round 1. If he is underdone I'd rather us go with someone like M.Jones instead as a first round victory is too important than risking Trengove and his fitness.

Would love to see both Jetta and Strauss play down back in Round 1 also, although I still think Nicholson will be around the mark as well.

He is still on the rookie list atm which may be the deciding factor if they don't upgrade him. I thought they'd be pretty close though.
Is LTI rules 8 weeks period or 8 weeks of the season?

whos more likely to get game time this year...Viney or Toumpas?

Toumpas need a bit more time to develop?

Viney. Viney will play round 1 for sure and probably will play 21-22 games. He's been training with the Dees for 2 years and played VFL (despite the efforts of Wojinski) in 2012.

Toumpas will play, but he had a hip issue for a while and hasn't got the background that Viney does.

You would think so, as he it sounds as though he has been very involved with the midfield group during the pre-season. However I'd rather we didn't need to upgrade him and we had no-one on the LTI list.

Depends...I can't wait to watch JV run people over in the middle, but from there we'll see how it goes. Man is a clearance machine, but Viney could be even better.

Just don't think there is a spot for Magner in our side when everyone is fit, or even with an injury or two. The bloke has a crack and he's fit but he's a plodder and lacks a bit of class that keeps him up with the rest.

This team has changed a little from my one a few months back and will no doubt change again as preseason matches shed more light on players' progress. This is a round 1 team and not an overall best 22. I'm assuming no rookies will be promoted and that Clark and Trengove will be unavailable for round 1.

B: Dunn Frawley Garland
HB: Watts T.McDonald Terlich
C: Grimes N.Jones Sylvia
HF: Howe Pedersen Blease
F: Davey Dawes Byrnes
Fol: Jamar McKenzie Viney
Int: Nicholson M.Jones Sellar
Sub: Rodan
Emerg: Spencer Bail Toumpas J.McDonald Tapscott Strauss

When Clark and Trengove return they will push Pedersen to the interchange and push Blease and Sellar out of the team.

I don't believe Pedersen, Byrnes and Rodan were recruited to play at Casey so they should slot straight into the 22. Likewise Viney, Terlich and Matt Jones have been playing against men and have been training exceptionally well and should also find a spot. By contrast Toumpas does not have that background. I'm sure he'll play plenty of games as the season goes by but I don't expect round 1 to be one of them unless he plays very strongly in the preseason.

On the backline Frawley, Watts, Tom McDonald and Garland are automatic selections IMO. Dunn played brilliantly down back in the latter part of last season and must be given the chance to show if he can maintain that form. Terlich gets the small defender nod ahead of Nicholson who is on the bench to cover any small forwards that may cause Garland a problem. Jetta and Tynan may also push for that spot as the season progresses but haven't shown enough as yet.

The midfield 6 pretty much pick themselves. With a solid preseason under his belt for once I'm expecting to see the best of Sylvia who was finding his best form late last season. Grimes is a star and will continue to prove it to the football world. Jamar is still clearly our best ruckman although I was really impressed with the progress Spencer made in 2012.

The forward line will look much better when Clark gets back, but it could be a good thing that Pedersen gets the opportunity to shoulder the responsibility of a key forward role so early. It may be the making of him. I was doubtful about including Davey in the team, but reports of his strong training have swayed me. He must be restricted to the small forward role though. He has consistently shown that he's out of his depth in the midfield and we have far better options there.

Nice team Hoddo. I'd only question Sellar's inclusion and doubt (hope) anyone will push Blease out of the team.

I think the back line is a little tall and either Dunn or Garland could play forward if needed rather than Sellar (until Clark is fit) and we play another midfield cum hb for rotations. Perhaps Toumpas / Strauss / Bail.

Thank you. I see your point re Blease and Sellar. Blease is an exciting looking player who I'm sure will do great things. I just feel there were a couple of flaws in his game he needs to overcome before he locks down a permanent position. He's right in the mix though. As for Sellar, I would hate to think he would be a permanent fixture and you're right that a smaller player, (like Nicholson), could play back while Garland is moved forward to provide the extra tall if required. Not Dunn though. After a very promising start his career was almost ruined by being swung all over the ground in a variety of roles. I want him left in peace on the backline to show if he can carry on the great form he showed in the latter stages of last season.

Good points all round. There is much to be said for leaving players in the designated positions and letting them fight for a spot. It helps team balance and game plan as well as player development. So Sellar taking a spot up forward while Clark is out makes sense. Fitzy would be in the mix too.

I really like Dunn and thought he did well down back last year. We need a nasty prick in the team. I just get the feeling if we're fit he may be fighting Garland for a spot. I reckon Watts / Frawley / McDonald are settled. Strauss / Nicholson are fighting for a spot. Jetta / Terlich are fighting for a spot. Dunn / Garland are fighting for a spot. And there are others ready to jump in to any position we'll have 'em.

I really feel Neeld has done well to get depth across most lines and a more balanced list which makes picking the best 22 harder. Now we just need a crumbing small forward and more quality mids.

There are a lot of good sides that are being put forward but I think there are only 12-15 that are in pen for round 1 obviously form and injury will have a big impact on the other 10 or so positions.
I do like the position we are in at the moment , I'm starting to feel and want a bit of revenge or what goes around comes around to a few clubs full of ***** . Sorry bout the French but I'm ready to get stuck into a few sides that have stuck the boot into us for a long time

Likewise Viney ... have been playing against men and have been training exceptionally well and should also find a spot. By contrast Toumpas does not have that background.

Just a small correction I believe: Toumpas was playing against men in the SANFL back in 2011, including finals experience. Viney only played, what, 3 games for Casey? Unless I'm mistaken, Toumpas has more experience playing against men than Viney does, and fitness issues aside, should be there (or very close) for Round 1. But great to have both of them.

Nice looking team though, agree with most of it. I'd swap Strauss for Terlich, but good to see the inclusion of Matt Jones - the players keep talking him up, he's obviously going to be in the mix.
