General Bombers Talk Potential change to Heritage Guernsey?

Just curious as to what shorts/socks they'll wear with the clash strip?

Don't hate it on it's own, just struggle to see how it works with the other parts of the kit.

I think it's already been established that the players will be wearing short shorts.

I like it and hope we can wear black shorts with the away strip.

If we wear white shorts that will also look ok. Red will be ugly.

Based on the promo material, I'd say white short shorts. They're not quite 80s though!

Is red a light colour or a dark colour?

It’s a strange question but the answer has had a significant bearing on Essendon’s Heritage Guernsey.

In 2009, the AFL mandated that the Bombers create a clash jumper to ensure when teams took the field one side was wearing a predominantly light uniform while the other wore a predominantly dark uniform.

The AFL’s interpretation of both red and black as dark colours created a conundrum for the Dons who had to find a third colour.

And so the grey jumper was born.

“With much reluctance we created an alternative jumper that used the grey from the Bomber logo and turned it into a heritage Guernsey,” Essendon CEO Xavier Campbell said.

“Although it was entirely new, we added elements to acknowledge our proud history and used it as an opportunity to pay tribute to the Legends that have represented this Club.”

The AFL has now changed its interpretation of red, which is now deemed a light colour.

“Over the last 18 months we’ve been working hard with the AFL to get the Guernsey back to our traditional colours – red and black,” Campbell said.

“So this year’s Heritage Guernsey has done that.

“It’s in line with our constitution. It retains the red sash with the black outline and fits the AFL criteria with ‘red’ now deemed a light colour.”

The jumper features every Essendon premiership player and also pays tribute to three-time premiership player and four-time best and fairest winner Tim Watson.

“Tim is a Legend of our Club,” Campbell said.

“He’s maintained a close association since his retirement. It’s fitting he be acknowledged in this way.

“It was important we got feedback from the fans and the fact they’ve voted him in speaks volumes for the high regard Tim Watson is held in by the Essendon family.”

It would make sense to be in black shorts if the other team uses white anywhere in their kit. Nothing ever makes sense against St Kilda though.

At risk of becoming as "detail-oriented" as the graphics design board, I don't particularly like the way either of the sponsor logos have been incorporated. Fujitsu interferes with the sash on the back, and Kia is not symmetrical with the AFL logo, nor does it fit properly over the sash/sash borders.

agree, but the kia one basically has to be that big and in that spot to be visible and maintain symmetry with the oval of filth on the opposite pec.

Fujitsu: Precisely. I think they've tried to use black where they can so it doesn't end up looking like a St Kilda specimen. But still :\

Kia: They're not the same size though, which makes it look unbalanced. idk if its just me but both the Kia and AFL logos also look too high, at least on Zakka and BJ.

This picture makes me like the guernsey a lot more. Looks like two different shades of red. Hated how it looked like two black lines on a red guernsey but it looks like a proper sash here.

It's the AFL, so using their logic yes as the suns red is primarily a light colour (on the account of the yellow trim) where as the essendon one is primarily a dark one (on the account of the black sash strips)
