Re: Welcome Daniel Bass

As an EHSer from his year level, I can tell you he never played footy. He was always a basketball nut. He's a great bloke though, always has time for a chat. I really hope he makes it. I can remember speaking to him in class about how Port were keen to draft him even 4-5 years ago because of his size and the success they had with Brogan etc.
Yeah year above me at high school, seemed good at bball (didnt expect him to go to the states :S) but i dont think he ever played junior footy at all tbh. Defs never did at high school.

He's very agile, has a pretty damn good vertical leap and he's pretty quick. I'm not really one to speculate on the aggression, but he wasn't a power forward in bball, more a tallish PG, maybe a SF. But certainly not a centre/PF who does a lot of body on body or posting up.

Rohde was true to his word of Port investigating alternative recruiting opportunities, especially with the draft getting nuked for the next few years.

If Bass hasn't played much football, I guess we shouldn't expect too much from his ruck technique straight up, or if Broges' early days are any guide, his judgement of the flight of the ball over distance.

On the other hand, a 198cm basketballer in the US system would be expected to have a fair leap, and be able to cover ground quickly. That's really important for rucks in the modern game, and puts Gilesy to the sword straight away. ;) And at 100kg, he already has some decent body size.

But maybe best of all will be the character a guy like this could bring. He's a young man who has left his friends and family behind and gone to the US to follow a dream with none of this sulking about being a 30 minute plane flight away. And when he's stepped back to a 'lesser' basketball competition, according to his coach has brought a terrific attitude with his game. That augurs well for his willingness to achieve with the Power, and bring an attitude that will rub off on team-mates.

He has been invaluable for the D-League team as he has stepped into group from day one and shown the younger players the way you go about practicing and the effort required to be successful on court.

Brogan is a readymade mentor too. Obviously knows what it's like to do the hard yards in crossing to such a difficult code.

Didn't see that coming.

*Heads over to draft thread to remove rucks from predictions*
Bass is not likely to be AFL ready for another two to three years (if ever) and we need some cover for a couple of years. Broges is still going strong but Lobbe cannot be expected to take a big load for the whole season this early in his career and Redden is some way off being ready.

Someone like Meiklejohn would be good insurance.

If Meiklejohn was to be drafted, it would have been last year. The need for backup then was just as great, and we passed.
not quite

we had lade/brogan this year... next year we only have brogran and a bunch of guys who havent played a game

i'd say we have a much bigger need for a backup this season

Lades gone and we have an intried youngster stepping into his shoes. Thurstans who could pinch hit in the ruck has retired so I think the need is greater next season.

With the performances of Lobbe and D.Stewart in the second half of this season, the recruitment of Bass and already having redden, I'm not seeing a huge need to bring in a ruck.

It may have been worthwhile trading in a ruck with some AFL experience, but that chance has passed. Drafting a SANFL level ruck probably wouldn't give us any more than Lobbe and D.Stewart would.

should hopefully turn out to be a steal . .
i used to play ball with him when younger.
- Had a massive jump due to playin a bit of volleyball.
- Fairly agile.
- Got a temper
A downside besides obviously not playing footy is he used to sook and cry when he didnt get his own way. . . ALOT.

Hope he works out for you guys.

Goodluck

Dean Brogan Mark II. This is actually pleasing to hear so long as he can control it on field.

SO it would seem he has all the physical attributes and has the right attitude and aggression.

All that remains to be seen is if he can play football!

Daniel Bass being interviewed on AA. He said he is 201cm. Rohde said 200cm, so Bass said he'll have to re-measure himself.

We have to roll the dice with our young rucks - throw them all in the deep end and see who can swim, otherwise they will never develop as a third stringer.

Yes FF this is the best of all. Obviously the guy is driven, focused and talented which are 3 vital atributes for success.

Good interview on the PAFC website.

Apparently he has never played a competitive game of football.

He was brought out a few months ago to test his fitness against a few other Port players but he couldnt even name them and he did a beep test vs. Matty Primus.

Played as a guard in college and was one of the short guys, lol.

So we've got a guy who is 201 cms, 100kgs, never played a game of football before in his life and we're supposed to be excited about that because the coaching staff has gone out on a whim and not developed our own ruck stocks?

If we see him as a 2-3 year project, that makes him 25 to 26 before he starts contributing to the team at a high and consistent level.

My apologies for being completely underwhelmed by the apparent need for a ruckman now.

I hope he turns out and welcome to the Power.
