I didn't want to say much before this game but from my point of view, this game was important for our playing group.
We just need to make sure we keep building on from last year and more importantly, believe that we can repeat it + add to it and grow again.
This game might not have meant much to us supporters, but what that win did for the players, after last years last 2 games, in IMO was immense.
The boys proved to themselves yesterday that last year was no flash in the pan. The fact we beat Collingwood and now get to play Sydney are huge bonuses. We do well against Sydney, who played in the GF last year, and it will lead us into the first 2 games with a positive mind set.
Our first 2 games are huge!

Agree, better Rd 1 prep playing two top 4 candidates

One thing I noticed and it stood out the last few minutes and twice when Newman went down the line in the second from a stop play possesion -- we still don't either mark it or kill it over the boundary often Oppo ruck gets it or ball goes back corridor side Oppo bring back to our def 50 for shot on goal ..I thought after the last two games last year we would have been better drilled exiting long from the pocket ..

Docherty had the ball and the last kick of the day - for a shot at goal. Boys were in control. They will be better prepared again.

Just need to split them 1-1 would be a good start.

I think the size and strength of our midfield may intimidate some teams - Cripps, Kennedy, Hewett, Cerra and Acres range from beasts to very solid units, who seem to thrive on physical contact.

TDK looks to have added size and strength to his frame too - bullish on it being his breakout year!

Motlop is certainly developing a wrecking ball physique and still has far more physical development to come, being so young.

The performances of the newbies Acres, Hollands, Cowan and Cincotta was very pleasing. Acres looks like he will really add something to our team - skill, size, run and leadership. Hollands looks like a jet, showing a great blend of speed, endurance and composure.
Yeah Acres slotted in really well. None of the up and under kicks the Dockers supporters rabbit on about either. Promising first hit out.

Watching the replay and, although it wasn’t an intense game, a few pies players decided to smash us when the opportunity presented itself.
We were a mongrel free zone.

I wasn't happy with quite a few of those Collingwood efforts. The guy running through Young was a pr!cks act. They put Motlop heavily into the ground after a mark twice (late). Someone smashed Kennedy's shoulder and rode Cerra into the ground.

Ok it's a game of footy so you expect a strong contest but at least stay within the rules. It's preseason ffs.

Hollands went when it was his time go - very pleasing. :thumbsu:

Sling tackle on Fisher late in the game should be a suspension

Agree our big midfield group is our 1 wood. Adding Walsh balances us out a bit but gee Cowan is going to be another beast.

I hope we get a few back next week but also hoping we rest quite a few for the Sydney game. The only meaningful thing that can come out of that game for Cripps, Hewitt, etc is an injury.

Should take a conservative approach with the guys who played a full game yesterday.

Winning against Syd means less than nothing.

1-1 would be par....
2-0 is a good start !!

Big chance with Lynch racing the clock who often kills us & Cats notorious slow starters and Hawkins having fitness issues in pre season also.

Aim high, think aggressively positive 👍

I'm halfway through watching the game in slow motion - one picks up a lot of stuff that is easily missed in normal speed - it helped a lot to mute the ridiculous Collingwood commentary - seriously so one-sided and irrelevant to Carlton - I'm sure the Collingwood supporters enjoyed it though.

LoB has improved a lot over the pre-season - he isn't the cleanest disposer by hand but he showed signs that his football awareness has increased a lot- and his was able to take a few tackles and get the ball away - a first for him and good signs. Jack Silvagni's set shot kicking needs to be fixed in a hurry - otherwise he is just a smart big-bodied midfielder pretending to be a forward.

Cerra/Hwett/Kennedy and Cripps are a handful for any combination of midfield Collinwgood wish to throw up - It got a bit tiring watching the faux NFL huddle away from the square by Collingwood tbh- and their huddle tactic had about as much effect on outcomes as tissue paper. One thing that stood out for me was Mason Cox has a nasty habit of watching the other ruckman and sticking his knee out at them -pretty much every time - I think he should be penalised for that - every time - TDK has improved his awareness as a ruckman - the next level of improvement will come from him improving the timing of his leap - which is easily as good as it gets in AFL.

A lot of those impressed the biggest improver was TDK for me.The tap work was dominant the work at ground level and around the ground influential.Forward craft improved he will play every game he is fit the other rucks can fit around him he is number1.Strong fast athletic good in air mature in ruck craft he will be a weapon this year

My takeaways

Besides the opening of the 2nd we controlled the ball out of the midfield, transitioned well and generated lots of opportunities.

Pressure was good and consistent throughout. No fade outs.

Psychologically strong in the 2nd to fight back and regain momentum.

Some of the connection into the forward line was a bit astray. Not the "bombs" which are a game plan element to take territory, but the last kick on transition.

Burned a few good plays with missed passes I50

There was improvement in not over committing to the leap even not leaping and wining the tap.
He had a habit of over leaping and taking himself out of the play last year

I haven’t seen the game so I can’t comment on Friday’s display, but last year the opposition ruckman took TDK’s leap away form the centre bounce, by moving around at the square and bodying him. He also got into the habit of trying to tap the ball down to himself instead of using the midfielders. He really needs to counter the body v body punch and use the tap and go action in rare circumstances.

From the last 10 minutes of the first Quarter and all of the second Quarter he won every bounce ruck.He used his pace and Agility to win throw ins.Full year last year full preseason with ruck support he will dominate forward ruck and around the ground.Honourable mentions O’Brien stronger in the contest but also mentally stronger kicked a goal from 35m slight angle he should kick these but hasn’t always a lot of Collingwood players missed these.Honey took his chance from 45m set up by another honourable mention motlop one of my favs.
Positioned himself really well smart player his decision making is lightning now has a bit more core strength and fitness to contribute for longer.
I’ve always said him and Durdin are going to be deadly both great alone but three times the player together
