Interesting that Cas said Docherty will be pushed into the midfield this year. Wonder how true that is and whether we see a different role for him, or if it pretty well stays the same.

Can't see why it won't be true as he looked like a mid when he joined us.
Has all the right traits and could easily get his way before some other players.

Casboult also mentioned White and even from the few sessions I've seen of White, he's a clear starter for mine.

Is he not going to miss games for the wallop?

White is a character that can be easily and rightfully forgiven.

Has his heart heavily invested in the CFC and does a lot more than kick pig-skin on a weekend.

We have 10 or so players that can rotate through the middle, expect to see Doc in the forward line too!

We need around 14.
Judd, Murphy, Gibbs, Thomas, Simpson, Everitt, Walker, Curnow, Bell, Carrazzo, Yarran, Graham, Cripps, Whiley, Boekhorst, Holman, Viojo-Rainbow, Docherty and Menzel can all play midfield.

The important ones like:
-Thomas
-Simpson
-Everitt
-Walker
-Yarran
-Docherty
-Menzel
-Boekhorst (?)
-Viojo Rainbow

Are all midfielders that can play in multiple positions. This helps midfield rotation significantly.

:) No they can't but how can you leave one of best midfielders in Carrazzo out of the equation?

Maybe I don't know what it is to be an elite mid but clean hands, razor sharp vision, great use of the body, ability to break tackles and clear the arms along with reading the ball and the ability to spot up the best option, are qualities required just as a starting point for an inside mid.

First hands to the ball is the trick and Gibbs came a long way in becoming our best mid last year and the reason we hold out a great hope for Cripps.

At this stage the guys I'd love to see getting a run through the middle this year, would be Docherty, Menzel and Thomas.
I just don't hold out the same hope for Bell, Holman,Yarran, Walker, Everitt or the new guys just at this stage.

Woops, wrote Curnow twice.

It's interesting watching back games just to see who's called on at centre bounces and how they perform.
Gibbs just did it so effortlessly when the ball was anywhere near him and regularly managed to find a way to move the ball on to advantage.

Would love to have all the tapes edited just to see what we did through the 30 or so centre bounces and through the 22 games we played but it's clear that Gibbs was the most heavily favoured in the centre, with Judd and Carrazzo (when available) behind him, and McLean thereafter.

Someone will have to move into McLeans post and that may well be Cripps but from what I've seen of Docherty over the past 12 months, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised should he find himself a whole new role................besides..........we have plenty HBF'ers :)

I don't want one position! I want all positions!

Keen to see Menzel in the midfield too!

Keen to see Menzel in the midfield too!

We know he has beautiful touch and will be interesting just to see how much tank he has developed in the off-season.

Still have no problem seeing Menzel isolated one on one on an opponent in the forward 50, as he'll win many more contests than he'll lose.

Sorry but you can't just choose a bunch of players who aren't KP and say they can all play midfield.

I like the Doc's game he has all the tools.. He has good disposal goes at about 70%. His kicking also has good penatration on it.
He can win the hard ball..Has good pace.. Is very good defensively..has a good marking skill set...
We saw Mick swing Doc forward at times last year.. His defensive pressure in the forward 50 was great.
Doc is pretty good at everything can't really think of any area of his game that isn't pretty soild.
With all the tools that Doc has can't see why he couldnt be developed into a damaging midfielder.
Maybe in a year or two.

It's easy to come up with 14 names from our list but in reality we are 4 good quality mids short at this stage to handle the top 4 teams. I have every confidence in the club for the first time in a long while we will develop and draft the necessary players to fill that gap to finally take on top 4 teams.

Probably just not of size yet Doc. Neither is Menzel they both need another year before we see them get serious game time in the middle. I wouldnt be surprised to see Menzel get a few minutes on the ball every quarter just to give a mid a rest in the fwd 50. You can really rest a mid in the backline so for this reason I think Menz is the guy that we will see go there first. I also read somewhere he was a mid all his junior career but hes been playing with the big boys since 16/17 y.o going into the SANFL so hes been fighting outside his weight range for a few years. First full pre season and building his tank and size, he will be getting closer.

Docherty can play all over the place, played multiple roles in defence and was good, looked ok in the midfield, was very good up forward, just kept finding it and sneaking goals, in the end he had to do some heavy lifting as we were running out of fit players last year. I don't mind Docherty on a wing either, he played some decent football there at times last year. Because of his abilities all over the ground it's hard to know where to play him, certainly trial him on the ball.
Watched Menzel's center work last year and it wasn't real impressive, in one particular game he went in and his opponent won the next two or three clearances, there is a lot to work on here but potentially he's an option. Great vision and kicking.
Cripps I like, I think he needs to learn to play in other positions though, he won't be coming in and playing all his game time on the ball, no way. In the back of my mind I also hope that he hasn't become too tall for the role either. I think he really needs to work on impacting the game as a forward and using his height in the air. I can see him being a good clearance player for us though but these big fellas take time. Always hope he could be a modern day version of Kouta who had sublime skills, athleticism and could go forward or drop back and was strong in the air and a beautiful mark not to mention being dynamite at stoppages.
I think Graham may be the most ready to go out of all our younger mids, statistically he's going fine, he's actually not that different to Sam Mitchell in his first years (considering the sub plays a part now), he's probably the type of player (size/type wise) who is ready to come on a little earlier. He didn't have the size and strength to play as an inside midfielder last year and this year he looks more like he has. I like his ball handling under pressure. He went ok when he rested forward. It's about how long he can run hard for really.

Can't wait for the season to start to see what these new and fit versions of our older players can offer. I think there are going to be some good players running around in the VFL and selection will be very hard.

I don't think so Jatz

I do know though that I kept an eye on players used and found a direct correlation between players used to ladder standing.

Can't see why that wouldn't be the norm today.
Oh no doubt. Obviously if you could just use your best 22, you'd do much better.

Without any research whatsoever, I'd say the average would be about 35 players a season. If we can stay around that number we should fare alright.

Had a real good day at the carlton open training in the morning on Tuesday mark whiley one of the coaches got me and my brother and showed us through the gym the change rooms and the altitude room.
We got high fives with all the players had good conversations got 30 autographs by the players and had pictures taken with Marc murphy, Chris judd, and Chris yarran and yarran was asking me questions like who is the fastest man in the afl
Very nice people and a day to remember
