Yep, not meant to imply rank laziness, but as you suggest, there are those driven to maximise their "God given" talents,
and those who are happy in a comfort zone a few rungs from the top of the ladder.

I was manic on the track in my younger day and hold with old fashioned tenets "we reap what we sow"
Thousands of the general public would gladly exert themselves to extreme a couple of hours a day for
a six figure pay packet, and being able to "play" for a living.

Yaz has clearly improved his work ethic, but was hypothesising that old habits die hard. Recurring soft tissue injuries come
from being under prepared or "over-cooked."
Just wish he could have an awakening similar to the fabled one of Gaz.
Personally... I think that Yarran needs to be moved onto the wing this season. He needs to be used as a link player and spend more time running lines through the midfield. His defensive game has come on leaps and bounds over the last couple of years and the time is now for him to take it to the next level.

We have all seen Gibbs take the step up when shifted into the midfield where he belongs. I think that the same needs to be done to Yarran. SuperFooty has apparently rated our midfield and after Gibbs, Murphy, and Judd... our midfield depth falls away quickly and lacks speed and polish. Shift Yazz and 1AW into the midfield and you can bet that all the pundits would suddenly be raving about the quality of our mids.

As for Gaz, he spent 4 years in the forward line before making the shift into the midfield permanently. The worst thing about Carlton is that with two of our brightest midfield prospects in the last 10 years... we have left them stagnating in defence for too long before shifting them into the midfield. Yazz needs to make the move into the midfield this year to step up to the next level.

I can't agree more with this, though I wonder whether there is any real change that will happen by calling him a winger rather than a half back. I mean, either way, we want him performing the same task - running and delivering into the F50 or through the middle of the ground.

I think that regardless of where the match committee write his name on the team sheet (or where he physically stands on the ground), he will always have the same job - play defensive when the opposition have the ball and mind XYZ player, but work off that guy when we have it and try to carry the ball through the middle and kick into F50. It will all come down to (ugh... that word...) structures.

Didn't Yarran have a calf injury only a few days ago?

But I agree, Yarran needs to reach elite status this year. Coming off some of last years performances, I wouldn't doubt he could be an A grader

I think some were implying that he couldnt be bothered riding up the mountain :D

Maaaaaaate... for what his job is, he is A-grade. Who are the better line-breaking flankers in the comp? There's not too many. Could you imagine if Yarran was getting 30+ possessions a game? With the way he delivers the ball and how damaging he can be, people would call him the greatest player ever.

Cyril Rioli rule: its not the size of the stats sheet, its how you use it.

Chris Yarran looks massive, his arms look huge

Yarran's natural instinct doesn't seem to be to contest the ball directly. He's too clever and has too many party tricks.

After some shaky performances he's learned to curtail that instinct when defending, but IMO if you put him in the midfield he'll go back to that.

Those damn opposition spies................the red hat always gives them away :)

They were right onto it today. I was enjoying a coffee in the Carlton Cafe and they even drew the curtains so you could not see out the windows!!!

Yeah............and the black ops helicopters with heat seeking missiles are a dead giveaway that we're not wanted at Visy :(

The irony is many a time over the last decade I would have loved the opportunity to draw the shades at some of our games so I did not have to see any more!! :)

Maybe. But Gibbs also seemed to wait off the ball, calculating and waiting for the error, for much of his time he spent in the back line.

Putting him in the middle has seen him hunt for the ball directly. Has been pleasing to watch.
