I really don’t understand Jamo’s “glimpses” being more impressive than Williams 25 or 18 disposal displays.

These conversations demonstrate how blessed Eagles fans have been with rucks.

The only ruck around Williams age that is realistically outperforming him is Jackson.

Draper who’s the “next big thing” has had 2 more years development, and statistically was pretty similar to Williams this year.

Ones being talked about like a messiah and the other is apparently on the delist pile.

Reeves/Briggs/TDK all the same, out of all the young rucks in the league Jackson is the standout and statistically he’s not much better (passes the eye test though for sure)

All ruckman have spud moments, they’re a special breed.
Expectations on this board are way too much. Lycett, Sinclair and Hickey all copped heaps of criticism as did a few more through the years including Jason Ball who was mainly a forward who could ruck. All of these have gone to other clubs and performed well for them. All of these players were also older and more experienced at the time. It's laughable at this stage comparing Williams and Jamieson to guys like Naitanui. I am happy if the ruckmen can halve the hit outs contests or at least negate opposition ruckmen. You would also like them to do a bit around the ground. If you are a giant like Sandilands you can dominate hit outs but then the team loses something when he is a liabilty elsewhere and that is where these two guys need to do some work.

It may be the case that ruckmen typically peak later in their career than all other players. But you still have to try and make assessments about whether players you have drafted to be ruckmen are going to be good enough to make it as you go along. You can't just draft a couple and leave them on your list for 10 years and even if they are not showing much just say "Well, ruckmen don't peak until 28". There are limits and caveats to that argument.

Allen, Darling, Cripps and Ryan are definite starters up forward which still leaves 2 spots, possibly 3 depending on how we structure midfield rotations

Waterman is still overcoming a knee issue and Petrucelle just injured his ankle although the extent of that is unknown just yet

So who’s left
  • Jones has been with the forwards so he’s in the mix
  • Petrevski-Seton maybe but we’re not hearing much about him and he hasn’t stood out when I’ve watched
  • Winder has played there before
  • Hewett could be a 7th forward with stints in the midfield
  • Long who at this stage is actually a genuine small forward

If he takes an opportunity in the lead up games Long is certainly going to be a chance

Our stock of genuine small forwards is actually pretty thin. Would be amusing if our last pick in the national draft was the first to debut.

From the u18 champs games I've seen, Long has really impressed me.

Very good footy brain, clean, good positioning, good small forward craft (front and centre, running under the packs at the right time).

Could end up being the steal of the draft.

We'll have 4 with Ginbey, Hewett & Barnett too.

IMO the decision needs to be made based on who can provide the most ground ball winning capacity and general defensive pressure. Lack of defensive pressure in our forward line is a massive problem for us. We might be the worst in the league at it. The last few years, once the ball hits the deck we are out of the contest and it just gets walked out of our forward line under minimal pressure and not only costs us a potential opportunity for a shot at goal at our end but often ends up costing us a shot at goal at the other end because of the ease with which the ball was able to be moved out of back half prevented us from being able to set up the defence in time. The problem is so big that it entirely should dictate selection policy for the final two spots.

I wouldn't have called either one of the two smalls as definite.
Based on form and/or attitude over 2021-22, neither should be walk up starts.
Ryan has apparently come into 2023 slimmer, fitter and with a better attitude. If so, then he should get first dibs.
Cripps is older, slower, tackles less, fumbles more and has become more selfish. If he isn't overtaken early on this year then we are really going nowhere in that area of the team.

From the training reports it sounds like Long is ahead of Hewett in the queue so it'd be Jones and Long at the moment, right? It'd be great if Hewett is banging on the door by round 1. Jones might be in trouble then.

You mean the guy who won our time trial?

The guy is B22 still and provides plenty.

I feel like this pre season has a massive #closertoaflag feel about it….. all the Freo expectations after a half decent year (losing a semi final is a pretty good year when you’ve never won anything) they’re all walking around like top 4 is in the bag. We’re expected to do nothing, perhaps even win the spoon…….you campaigners know what happens next.

Cripps up there with the most under-appreciated player on our list.

His trolling of Cox is elite in itself.

The criticism is understandable - there is a big gap between Cripps best and his worst.

When he's on then yeah he is an epic, under-rated forward who is easily b22. When he is off he is a momentum killer and seems to miss giving off the easy goal we could've got.

Hopefully Simmo has the balls to play him in the WAFL if he can't adapt. There's room for the backwards kick but Gaff got to the point where he was doing it as his first option.

AFL or at all? Surely he's playing WAFL round 1?
I watched an old game from 2012 and young Gaff was super attacking. Also seemed to get a pretty good top speed. Would run forward and kick goals.

It's sad that he's been so beaten down that it's just outlet mark then look back to Hurn or TB. I agree that if he doesn't learn how to take it on then he needs to sit in the wafl until he figures it out.

A good coach should be able to sort that out.
