J Williams and Barnett will be better than both anyway but nice to have some competition now with the young ruck/fwd types to put a rocket up them.

To the moon!

Interview with Mark Duffield on yesterday’s match sim

A few takeaways:

  • NicNat looking very fit and dominant (even though he was up against a lesser opponent in BWilliams)
  • Eagles are changing game style which same players need to adapt to e.g Gaff still looking for cheap kicks in the back half
  • Shuey giving a few players a spray
  • Allen progressing well and kicked a few goals
  • Players overall are looking much fitter and responded to last years criticism
  • Ginbey and Long pushing for round 1 selection
  • Chesser a slow burn and might not play until halfway through the year (!)

Gaff still looking for cheap kicks in the back half
Hopefully Simmo has the balls to play him in the WAFL if he can't adapt. There's room for the backwards kick but Gaff got to the point where he was doing it as his first option.

AFL or at all? Surely he's playing WAFL round 1?

Yep he was saying Chesser will need a few games in the WAFL before AFL. Unfortunately WAFL doesnt start until round 5 of AFL, but there is practice games.

yeh true, to elaborate more i think jamo has more potential to make it than Williams.

Williams just spuds it up too much on field IMO. Dropped marks, missed gettable goals from the goalsquare.
In a parallel universe where Williams isn't a spud, he kicks that goal, JK goes on to bag 10 and we salute for the bearded God in his final game.

In all seriousness though, he is still pretty raw and we have been spoiled in the ruck dept for decades now. He just needs to work on his consistency and reduce those poor moments he so often has. Jury is out for me at present.

This is what I mean when I say At least Jamo is competitive. He tries to be involved in the game with repeat efforts. Jamo doesn’t have the the athletic abilities or talent of Williams but his work rate is whats needed. Would actually help our talls a lot if he can produce this sort of role

Jamo doesnt have the athletic abilities of Williams?

That comment surprises me.

I dont have the opportnities to watch them live or train. Bailey has always seemed to be struggling endurance for mine.

Jamo can at least hold a tan, that always helps IMO.;):drunk:

Not 💯 on age but from memory Gardiner and nicnat showed much more early on.

Dont get me wrong i hope both become good players but i just dont see williams making it.

Your opinion is highly regarded by me, and you are one of the more knowledgeable posters on this forum.

Season 2022 was a blur, but i was actually suprised by jamos raw glimpses (sparodic) showing of talent.

If we had to make a call on keeping jamo or b williams at the end of this year (assuming both are out of contract) i'd retain jamo.

In raw athletic ability and talent I think Williams has Jamieson covered. Endurance is fairly even but I think Jamieson is probably slightly ahead

In terms of competitive instinct and a desire to impact a contest, Jamieson is a long way in front

In the Geelong game, Williams showed he’s got it in him just needs to find it regularly.

Right now in the race for round 1 selection they’re probably even so the games against Port and Adelaide will likely decide who gets the nod

Both contracted for 2024

I really don’t understand Jamo’s “glimpses” being more impressive than Williams 25 or 18 disposal displays.

These conversations demonstrate how blessed Eagles fans have been with rucks.

The only ruck around Williams age that is realistically outperforming him is Jackson.

Draper who’s the “next big thing” has had 2 more years development, and statistically was pretty similar to Williams this year.

Ones being talked about like a messiah and the other is apparently on the delist pile.

Reeves/Briggs/TDK all the same, out of all the young rucks in the league Jackson is the standout and statistically he’s not much better (passes the eye test though for sure)

All ruckman have spud moments, they’re a special breed.

The thing about young rucks taking time is true but alot of them show good gimpses and etc. bailey probably has had two games where he has done that and the rest have been meh. The thing that has frustrated me with Williams is that physically he hasn’t been been a wirey kid and yet physically he struggles. I watched wafl games where smaller utility type players in the ruck beat him. In fact I saw that blair bloke for peel move him out of a couple contest

Thanks for the link. Other points I picked up :

• Yeo got through ok and looked to be moving well
• A lighter and fitter Kelly probably the best mid on the ground
• A lighter and fitter Ryan working up to the wings to provide a target and the running back hard
• Hewett lit it up for a 10-15 minute burst in the third period and did some nice things
• Petruccelle looked like an outward roll of the ankle rather than an inward roll that causes syndesmosis issues
• Hunt seems to have been given a license to run and take the game on
• Clearly a plan to move the ball faster and forwards were quick to express their frustration if they thought a player had ginned around too long
• Chesser he thought more likely to be getting WAFL games to see how he goes before making an assessment mid year if he’s AFL ready (We did a similar thing with Venables in his first year, 2017, only for an assistant coach to tread on his toe just after he’d been told he was going to debut)
• Impressed with Long - footy smarts and spatial awareness, knowing how to position himself to be dangerous. Qualities some of our draft watchers highlighted about him
• Thinks the mood around the club is good. Players are up and about with a strong determination for there not to be a repeat of last year
• Predicts eagles to be improved and missing bottom 4 with 7-9 wins but short of finals, perhaps bottom 6 or 7 (so 12th/13th) which feels about right
