Bit to like from that article

Re SPS

He stood out in Monday's sessions, which included some match-scenario play with reduced numbers, with his ferocious tackling as the Eagles look at their options for a new small forward.

Chesser doing some competitive work

Prized youngster Campbell Chesser moved into some competitive elements of training on Monday having being held back

And three things we’d like to see

Some highlights of the session included draftee Elijah Hewett's evasiveness and poise in traffic, midfielder Tim Kelly's strength fending off tacklers, and the stoppage work of big-bodied midfielder Jai Culley.
Hewitt has a good sidestep. Was done a Basso last year where he went round a hapless beagle and dobbed one from 50

Just in support of this his last 6 games of the season he had 8, 4, 3, 6, 6 and 5 tackles. He was a bit light on early in the season coming back from injury but I'd say there's a pretty decent chance that's match fitness. In our woeful game against GWS he had 7 tackles.

Cripps can be a real selfish footballer at times, but that can sometimes what it takes to be an AFL forward. He sometimes isn't the cleanest handler of the ball but I don't think his work rate can be questioned. If youngsters want to work hard to go past him, great, but they've got they'll have to perform at a high AFL level.

He really had a purple patch in 2018 to the point he was certainly one of the best small forwards in the competition.
I think Crippa takes the responsibility on rather than being selfish.

Yeah I agree, backs himself but can look shit when it doesn't come off. Has given away plenty of goals to guys in better positions.
I think it was 2 years ago he kicked 6 points in a game ( including a couple of posters) Week or two later kicked 6 straight. A forward can look a hero or a mug depending on how he hits them on the day.

Its a bit off topic here, but i was thinking back to when Nic Nat got suspended for tackling Karl Amon, because "he should have calculated the weight differential", apparently. And i can't think of an example, no matter the size disparity or nature of the tackle, where the tribunal has used "weight differential" as due cause to issue a suspension since. Or before for that matter. Mumford used to smash guys most weeks and this was never an issue to warrant suspension more often then not

Precedence plays a big part in legal decisions and due process, so i still fail to see why a legal tackle, that has no former tribunal precedence, was able to stick

And don't even get me started on Amon's "delayed concussion". Whereby he played the remainder of the game and then that medical report was, in part, used to sink us at the judiciary

I would love for us to use the same "delayed concussion" in our medical report one day to return the favor for Port

Oh, and Michael Christen is a dickh*ad
I don’t hold Grudges either

From the u18 champs games I've seen, Long has really impressed me.

Very good footy brain, clean, good positioning, good small forward craft (front and centre, running under the packs at the right time).

Could end up being the steal of the draft.
Couldn't agree more, watching his championship games he couldn't be more impressive. Especially for a guy who was a midfielder, got injured for a significant amount of time and came back and had to reinvent himself as a small forward on the fly.
He looked like he'd been a small forward all his life.
Don't want to overhype him as he's still so young and underdeveloped. But could be one for the future...

West Coast began their week with some physicality and skill work at Mineral Resources Park on Monday morning. Here’s what we saw...

Chesser On Track

Get excited West Coast fans because Campbell Chesser might not be as far off full fitness as we thought.

Chesser, 19, completed most of the session with the main group, showing no signs of an ankle injury which robbed him of his maiden AFL season.

The 2021 first-round draftee moved smoothly through a series of drills that tested not only his ankle but his strength in the contest.

Chesser had power out of the contests and showed his skills in quick ball movement drills that should put a smile on Eagles fans’ faces.

Ruck draftee Harry Barnett also participated in most of the session for the first time since joining the club having overcome an ankle niggle.

It will be interesting to see if either or both participate in any match simulation on Friday.

Injury Concerns

West Coast continue to have great numbers on the track, with 41 players making an appearance.

Rhett Bazzo, Jordyn Baker and Jack Petruccelle were the only absentees, with the latter injuring his ankle in match simulation on Friday.

Midfielder Luke Edwards was also restricted to walking and jogging laps, having not missed much of the pre-season after osteitis pubis last year.

Captain Luke Shuey was eased throughout the session in what is likely just load management work, while Tom Barrass did a lot of high-marking drills with coaches as he tests out a hand injury he sustained over the Christmas break.

Just a few players were eased throughout the session as the Eagles look at nearly full health again with a practice match against Port Adelaide in less than three weeks.

Forward Floored
Liam Ryan is normally the most jovial Eagle on the track, but on Monday an errant bounce of a ball left him none-to-pleased.
Anytime a player goes down there is a concern, but Ryan shook off a football to the nether-regions to finish the session.
It wasn’t too long before the high-flying forward was laughing again with his teammates and showing some of his excellent skills.

West Coast worked on fast ball movement throughout the session and Ryan was a stand-out, often using his first option to open the ground up and give his team the advantage.

Looking the fittest he ever has, Ryan could be set for more of a role up the ground in 2023.

Jai Culley impressing during the preseason and surprisingly … Witho!

Sent from my iPhone using BigFooty.com

Hurn just smiles and walks past. He ain’t playing this game

Witho and West two common names in that video we really haven’t heard too much about.

I might be in the minority but I still hold out hope for Witherden.

He might arguably have the best and the worst kick at the club, but I think if we are focused on quick ball movement, his aggressive footskills can complement that style.

In my thoughts he’s at his best hitting a 55m kick on the 45 to a guy on the run rather than trying to hit a 15-20m kick to a stagnant target.

Surprised Darling didn't mention Drew Petrie, given he's been following him around from all the training reports i've read.

Interestingly, we have more All Australians on our list (8) than any other club - Naitanui, McGovern, Hurn, Darling, Ryan, Yeo, Gaff and Kelly. Unfortunately, they’re all at the wrong end of their careers with only Ryan and Kelly who could realistically say their best isn’t necessarily behind them

At the other end we have the fewest top 10 picks on our list (4), equal with Port and Geelong

Add two more for Geelong Hawkins and Cameron would of been top 10 picks if it wasn’t for zone selections and the old fs rules

They looking fit but the injuries starting to mount up ? Usually injuries are due to poor preparation or poor fitness, Still got a few months to get there fitness level up to the required level for AFL. Fingers crossed no more injuries & full steam ahead for the rest of the preseason.

Injuries are starting to mount up?

Missing from today’s training from press reports

1) Petruccelle sprained his ankle in the match sim putting him out for a couple of weeks
2) Luke Edwards with an apparent quad strain not considered serious
3) Baker hasn’t been training for an as yet unspecified reason
4) Bazzo isn’t injured but has been given leave for obvious reasons

That’s it

A few (Duggan, Barnett, Chesser, Cole, Dewar) are still on modified programs but are on the track and increasing their training loads

Genuinely not sure what you’re on about

It's definitely a cause for alarm - I'd increase my pessimism for the upcoming season to somewhere between 10% & 40%.

I still hold out good too but I can’t see it. He’s just too slow for the modern game to be playing in the backline. Would love to be proven wrong because when his confidence is up he can be a ripper kick

Agree. As soon as he look for a dinky 20m cross he ****s it and results in a turn over goal. If he has team mates up the ground offering something 50m away that's where he nails it and looks a million bucks. He more than most will benefit from a change in game plan as the chip around the backline is his kryptonite.

Ahh the drum beats on

Rnd 1 is in 40 days. Which is 5 weeks.

I guess it’s all over then.

Witho has been great since coming over.

The main problem is he has a severe case of 'dumb face'. Makes his mistakes look extra dumb.
