It's interesting listening to Will Schofield on his podcast this week and he still has huge faith in Bailey Williams to be a quality forward, acknowledging that he hadn't displayed as such yet. He's very bullish about it.

Hopefully he is right and without JK he can get some good experience in a key position this year. He may just be a bit of a slow burn (despite being just 22).

How is Harry Barnett's rehab on the ankle going? I know he was close to joining the main group. Did he do any match sim Friday? He would be way underdone to start the season given he hasn't had a proper preseason but if darling was out for the season and we were doing pinch hit 2nd KPF I think it would be good to trial him there. Give him stints in the ruck and up forward as part of our 2 ruck setup with Nic Nat.

I'd imagine Jameison, B Williams are obviously ahead of him but I think if they don't work out it could be a good way to get games into him. 202cm and 96kgs means he isn't too far off being physically mature enough for a KPP or ruck (will maybe max out at 100-105kg). His highlight real had him taking some good marks, kicking goals and being reasonably agile.

He joined in with the main training group on Monday for the first time since joining the club. Has been in the rehab group with that ankle since being drafted, had a couple of setbacks but looks to be on the right track now. Hasn’t started any match sim yet though.

When first-year or young players get injured the club usually takes a very cautious approach with them so I’d expect Barnett will be eased very slowly back into match sim.

Doubt he’s fit for the practice matches, and seeing how he’s coming from a fair way back, I think he’ll start the year in the WAFL behind Jamieson and Williams in the ruck order.

Hopefully he can build some good form in the WAFL this year and put pressure on those two. He’s quite solidly built for a first year ruckman so he may come on quicker than people expect.

The beagles will be happy

It’s taken this when you have a look at the absolute trash we have on our list…. Rotham, Waterman, SPS, Langdon, Williams b, Jamieson, Witho, Winder, Panic kick Gaff it goes on and on

Id certainly hope there’s a ton of injuries because if Waterman is anywhere near best 22 next year we are truly stuffed.

Waterman is worth two whipping boys….

No more multi year deals for complete spuds like the Nelson, Rotham, waterman’s of this world .. you get 3 years to show something when you come in otherwise don’t let the door hit you on the way out…

There goes the idea of improving the wafl side…

Well done however for them to sign this giant of the game who they obviously had to beat 17 afl clubs off signing him as a delisted free agent or drafting him in November as some here believed he had some afl future and was worthwhile wasting 8 seasons on a list for…at least he will still have Waterman and Rotham to keep him company.

If you haven’t figured out that after 73 games Waterman isn’t a key forwards backside and Williams has shown time and time again he can’t mark or kick making him useless as a forward then there’s not much help for you.

Honestly, at this point everyone on this board, everyone on this site and probably everyone with some tangential connection to football knows your views on Waterman.

I know you obviously have an alert set up so that every time the name Waterman is posted you can immediately reply with some version of "He's a spud, he's bad, he's not WAFL quality" etc etc, but do you ever think you might get bored of it? Or alternatively do you think you might eventually exhaust every possible critical description to the point that you'll have to start making up insults just to keep things fresh? "Waterman is a pomegranate, Waterman is an axolotl, Waterman is a goranslubber" ... that sort of thing?

******* dooms day level if we see the B one as a FF

Dude has the mobility of a giraffe. Appalling set shot. Less useful version of F Mcinnes.
You are well off with this call. He’s only 22 and talls very often take longer to develop fully. Here’s some notes from his draft profile:

‘Williams is quick, agile, strong and has a great natural leap. He recorded 66cm in the standing vertical jump in the NAB AFL Draft Combine in October and won the running vertical jump (left foot) with a leap of 94cm.’

He played some ruck in TAC cup level but was taken as a forward prospect. Still can make an impact up there I honestly think. Club has some faith in him and that’s great. Hope he proves some of you wrong tbh

Meh.

Watermans nowhere near as good as priddis at attracting hate.

Did i ever tell you about the time priddis got chased down htb by a three toed sloth

Waterman had plenty of chances last year with Allan out. Played 20 games mostly as a forward and kicked 18goals. Was some games without Kennedy too.

He’s played regular games (10+) for the last 5 seasons.
He’s a good kick at goal, pretty reliable. Not much of a presence though and goes missing a lot.
If we’re relying on him to be FF/CHF we’re in trouble. Can live with him as the third mobile tall if he can get involved a bit more around the ground.

Jack Williams seems to be having a pretty good preseason. Any chance he’s ready?

He did about as well as Ryan, Rioli and Cripps with the opportunity he had last year. How about we give him a go with a hopefully healthy midfield to work with.

I am not saying that i think that Waterman is going to be a star. But i think the argument you made has a few holes in it. I think any forward would struggle to kick goals with the amount and quality of supply to the forward line last year. On top of that our midfield (to out detriment) has had tunnel vision for Kennedy for a long time. Every kick into the forward line goes to Kennedy even if he has 3 blokes on him and even if all they can do is float it up on top of his head where it is easily spoiled. The other blokes in the forward line have to just try and do something with whatever scraps are left.

The biggest issue with Waterman is that he is a kick/mark forward. He is not very useful or damaging once the ball hits the ground. Nor is he very useful defensively with chasing and tackling. I don't think he can be played as 3rd tall forward in the long run. The 3rd tall needs to have a bit of utility and have some ability to win ground balls, kick goals from snaps and be competent defensively since he will not be the primary target for midfielders delivering the ball to a leading target in the forward line. If he is going to play it needs to be as a key forward where the ball is kicked to him on the lead a fair amount of the time and he has a chance to kick 4 or 5 goals and thereby justify his selection despite his flaws and deficiencies.

True, none of them had a particularly good year either. With all our injuries we needed some of the the second tier players with experience to stand up last year. I understand there was a lack of inside 50’s but I didn’t see much from him. I’m not sure if there is a lot of potential improvement in him. Hopefully I’m wrong.

He’s had an injury interrupted preseason too though, with a back.

Yeah I get there wasn’t a lot of supply but I’ve been watching him for years now. He’s one of our best kicks at goal but I just don’t think he does enough. I’ll go 3qtrs without even seeing him and then he’ll pop up for a goal. He’s ok and he’s probably first in line to replace Darling. Not too excited about it though

Watching him from the grandstands he does a lot of sacrificial running for little reward. And he runs at a fair clip. If he becomes more of a focal point at chf im sure he’ll go ok.
