Imagine being Thorney... and actually sitting down there and taking a ridiculous amount of time to build that training report.

Who does that? Who honestly has that amount of time on their hands to go into that much detail?

Chuckling away as you'd type prophetic things like...

"Gee Venables has some skills...."
"curled a few beauties from behind the boundary"
"Nelson is pale as buggery..."
"Duggan looked on and was hitting targets left and right..."
"There was a big bloke who pulled up next to me and I could have sworn it was Suma, but I'm sure I was wrong..."
"McGovern split his time between the defenders and the forwards..."

I don’t listen to the other shows but Duffield has only done 4 shows so far and I’m a fan

He’s already done interviews with Nisbett and now Fitzpatrick. Todays interview went for half an hour so he covers plenty of ground. Questions are intelligent and the interviewee has time to answer without being cut short

First time I’ve heard Fitzpatrick and I already like him more than the man he replaced. Seems to have a better grasp of football and talks more naturally about it

I quite enjoyed the duff and quarters podcast.

I actually didnt mind vlahos and hagdorn on mondays and thursdays. Maybe because it reminded me of sitting in the car as a kid while the old man was diving me to training after school or weekend comps.

I miss the duff and quarters podcast but this new segment that duff is doing is a reasonable replacement.

Fitzy played for University in the early 80's (he could have been there late 70's but before my time). I don't recall playing against him so he wasn't in the A grade team. He was a party animal at various functions with football and in his early days at Robinson Cox. Decent guy from when I knew him but did not show huge leadership. That said, agree he is a massive improvement on Russell.

From his interview, I get a few points

Positives:
1. We get another 3 WAFL senior players per the new agreement which is great. Nelson plus another 2 would be a major improvement.
2. Our board are aware our midfield depth stinks and will be prioritising it at the draft.
3. Sounds like we are not going WA only at the draft. Best available midfielder sounds good so Mackenzie, Phillipou and Hollands could be coming over west.

Negatives:
1. "King Nissie I" will be around until he wants to retire. Paul values continuity, safe hands and experience more than results. I did not get the feeling that Trev reported to him, Paul seemed in awe of Trev.
2. Lots of IFs. A naïve assumption that we will have all senior players returning fit and a full WAFL team to pick from. Also defensive about how madly we performed last year. Remember this was a period of 18 months of crap football and Covid only impacted a couple of months.
3. He is either ignorant or lying to say that our list is in good shape. Probably fair to go on radio talking it up but it is not very convincing.

Am I deluded in thinking we could make finals if we have a a healthy list for once?

You are. Our best 22 is probably competitive. In many areas, there is a massive drop off in talent and experience and all clubs call on depth, not usually as much as we did last year.

However not have a winning game strategy is our biggest flaw. We have lost contested possession, ground ball gets and inside 50 for about 3 years now.

NicNat, Guv, Shuey and Yeo have been consistently missing for large spells most seasons since 2020. To say they will all be fit and firing is unrealistic.

We certainly could. Collingwood is the prime example from 2021. But you need:

-team fit and available
-new gameplan that sticks in the first month or so of the season
-young guys able to play roles to give some depth

We managed it in 2011 and also 2012 (to an extent).

If it happens, we'll like bounce up and then back out of the 8 as the vets retire

We could win the flag but we’d need a few things to go right:
  1. Every other team folds
  2. AFL awards premiership to west coast by default

The midfield and winning enough of the ball has been and will continue to be our biggest issue in being competitive in games.
Going to take a while for the young guys we have taken in the last year or so to have an impact and you don't imagine anyone we take this year is going to be the next Chris Judd in that respect. We're at least two years away imo.

I think Yeo is actually our most important player. B&F in our flag year and a beast around the contest. If he’s fit and firing in the middle this year it makes a huge difference to contested possession. A big if though and who knows if he ever gets back there.

Very true about him potentially being our most important player but after his OP sadly his best days on the footy field are seemingly behind him.

I think our team has looked better "on paper" than it actually is for a while now. Routinely underwhelms for what you'd expect unfortunately.

Naitanui (x3), Yeo (x2), Hurn (2x), Gaff (2x) McGovern (4x), Darling and Kelly are all still AA's going around again in 2023.

The problem is they're 32, 29, 35. 30, 30, 30 and 28, with most likely past the peak of their careers and well on the downhill by now.

Keep turning the list over, keep hitting the draft hard and bringing forth the new wave of eagles champs.

Geelong’s grand final team was the oldest team to ever play. I feel like if we can manage them properly through pre-season and regular season they can make a big impact. We just need our younger leaders like Duggan, Allen, Cole, Ryan, Kelly etc to step up and have good seasons as well so the 30+ guys don’t need to play every week. Then if you add a breakout of Hough, Bazzo or BWilliams it could be exciting. Conscious this is all best case scenario and I’m sure we’ll cop some injuries as soon as match sim starts.
