The Code Mark Duffield
The 2021 first round draft pick, who was injured this time last year and missed the entire season, gave the Eagles a sneak preview of what he might be capable of with a sparkling first half effort that netted him two goals with a third one dished off to Liam Ryan
.
Chesser came out of the game at half time as the Eagles build his fitness after the long lay-off but they would have liked his speed and evasive skills through the midfield as he adjusted quickly to the tempo of the game.
The Eagles set the game up as Probables versus Possibles in the first half and the task for the Possibles quickly became impossible as they were swamped by midfield power and quick ball movement.
Ginbey, West Coast’s first pick at last year’s draft, started in the midfield for the Probables. He had a hand in two first term goals and took a very strong mark in the second term as he makes a case for round one selection.
He and fellow draftee Noah Long played for the Probables while Elijah Hewett played for the Possibles and was starved of opportunity.
Luke Shuey
, Dom Sheed and Oscar Allen
were “managed” and did not play. The Eagles dismissed speculation in Perth on Friday afternoon that Allen may have a strained hamstring.
The club still believes that Jack Darling
(ankle) is a chance to play in round one but they did switch Tom Barrass
from defence to attack in the second term in what may have been an attempt to find forward line alternatives if either or both of Darling and Allen are absent.
The Possibles were swamped. Yeo started in defence, switched to the midfield and became the dominant player on the field in the first term. A 5.4 to 0.1 quarter time scoreline became an 11.5 to 0.3 half time rout before the teams were evened out after half time
PLAYER ANALYSIS
Campbell Chesser: The best signs he has shown in match simulation. A handful of early touches off a wing for the Probables. Kicked two handy first half goals and fed one to Liam Ryan
in the second term.
Elliot Yeo
: Started at half back for the Probables then went into the middle and lit it up. Looking ominously powerful.
Tom Barrass
: Started back and then went forward in the second term which may be significant if Jack Darling
and Oscar Allen
are injured.
Josh Rotham
: Switched from Possibles to Probables in defence when Barrass went forward. Has been in form and again, that move may be significant if the tall forwards are injured.
Sam Petrevski-Seton
: Firming for a small forward berth after starting there for the Probables. Kicked a second term goal and had some nice touches.
Bailey Williams: Started in attack for the Probables but swapped with Callum Jamieson at quarter time to ruck against Nic Naitanui. Took a big third quarter mark.
Callum Jamieson: Kicked a second quarter goal when switched to Probables and sent forward.
Jai Culley: Strong effort both midfield and forward for the Probables. Definitely in the round one mix.
Jeremy McGovern
: Looks really fit and took a number of telling intercept marks for the Probables.
Shannon Hurn
: With an 11.5 to 0.3 scoreline at half time he wasn’t exactly run off his feet for the Probables. Solid enough.
Alex Witherden
: Has impressed the Eagles all summer, got a gig with the Probables and pushed forward to kick a first quarter goal.
Reuben Ginbey: Started in the engine room for the Probables, had a hand in the first goal and won his share of ball. Good chance to play in round one based on what we saw.
Noah Long: Started in attack for the Probables, kicked the first goal of the game.
Jake Waterman
: Got first crack at a berth in attack with Probables but then switched teams at quarter time after Barrass went forward. Subbed out at half time to build fitness after interrupted preparation.
Liam Ryan
: Moving well, created first quarter chances for others and then kicked two second term goals for himself.
Nic Naitanui: Important in a couple of early clearance wins for the Probables. Both Bailey Williams and Callum Jamieson were more competitive against him than they have been in previous match simulations.
Tim Kelly
: Kicked a first term goal and was solid running through the idle in a dominant midfield
Liam Duggan
: Took a brave mark running with the flight in the second term and ended up in the fence. Sent for running drills at half time with Chesser.
Elijah Hewett: Not picked in the stronger team in the first half. May be third in line out of the first year draftees. Kicked a second half goal as the teams were evened out.
Jamaine Jones
: Used both in defence and attack for the Probables before half time. Looks like he is in best 22 mix but it could be at either end of the ground
Jamie Cripps
: Worked back into defence and streamed forward for the Probables without being able to hit the scoreboard before half time but snapped a nice third term goal.
Jayden Hunt
: Looks like he has a licence to provide some speed and dash off the backline and he did that for the Probables in the opening term to pretty good effect.
Andrew Gaff
: Typical Gaff game. Worked his wing hard running from end to end.
Xavier O’Neill: He got a gig with the Probables and he didn’t waste the chance with a hard working first half before the teams were evened out at half time.
Connor West: Looks like he is a depth midfielder at this stage after a half with the Possibles.
Greg Clark: In the same boat as West.
Isiah Winder: Has a few ahead of him in the race for forward berths. Shows glimpses when he gets around the ball.
Harry Edwards: Tough first half for the young defender as the Possibles got swamped. Showed his frustration a couple of times.
Coby Burgiel: Tough going in the first half for the Possibles.

PLAYERCARDEND
Nic Naitanui: Important in a couple of early clearance wins for the Probables. Both Bailey Williams and Callum Jamieson were more competitive against him than they have been in previous match simulations.

Elijah Hewett: Not picked in the stronger team in the first half. May be third in line out of the first year draftees. Kicked a second half goal as the teams were evened out.

PLAYERCARDEND
