Waterman
Hewett
Hough
Petruccelle
O’Neill
Rotham
West
Long
Culley

All played most or all of the second game after playing some minutes in the first game. So Culley’s management against Port wasn’t unique and is unlikely to have anything to do with how he played

His non selection for the Adelaide game is based on either form, load management or an injury/niggle

If it’s form then O’Neill and Clark have been selected ahead of him - O’Neill went pretty well in the second half and Clark played wing so isn’t competing for the sane spot as Culley. O’Neill ahead of Culley on form isn’t a stretch.

Ginbey, Hewett and Chesser have also been preferred but I think that’s to give them exposure particularly Ginbey. Hewett is only playing a half whilst Chesser needs as much game time as his body can handle

Culley has had a big preseason so perhaps it is simply a load management issue. We already have some players slated for managed minutes and there wasn’t scope for Culley to also have pre planned reduced minutes

Or he’s picked up a niggle that they don’t want to risk. The club has already shown a tendency to pull players out of training at any sign of a niggle and haven’t broadcast it when they have

Could be any one of those three and they’re all rational explanations

And whilst I’m disappointed not to see Long or Hough names you could probably go through the same explanation for both of them although it’s more likely form for those. That they’ve missed is a good indicator that we have a genuine squad of 30+ to choose from which can only be a good thing

Some interesting bits

"We started to head down a different track with style of play last year, but it's just hard to get any evidence or buy-in on what we were doing because of availability," Simpson told AFL.com.au.

Simpson said handing more responsibility to his assistants this pre-season and drawing heavily on their knowledge was important as the Eagles try to execute better tactically.

The coach also got his team into a match simulation phase earlier, rather than breaking down and rebuilding the game style in the classroom first.

"We get in for a couple of weeks pre-Christmas … so maybe four sessions, and then suddenly it's January 13," Simpson said.

"So it was less breaking the game down and more get out and play and have a few philosophies around that. That's probably the change I took as a coach.

"And using the assistants a bit more. You do have your way of doing things when you haven't moved around a lot, so actually giving some opportunity for those guys to grow.

"Jarrad Schofield took over the training planning and the drills and all that stuff. So it looked different, which was great. Coming from Port, they've traditionally been a very good transition side, so some of those things we did."

I like Hewett. Think he’s a very good chance of being a top 5 player from his draft year because he’s a natural footballer. Skilled on both sides of his body

That said, from what I’ve observed at training I don’t think he has the tank to play four quarters of football as a midfielder in the AFL. I’m not saying that as a criticism just an observation

It won’t surprise me in the slightest if he’s selected as the sub for round 1, in fact I think he should be as the best player for that role
I used to go to every training session but unfortunately can’t now so I’ll take your opinion but I do get annoyed at people who just want to bag these kids from day 1. From what I saw of this kid with Swans and WA I have no doubt he will be a very good player

This is the same shit that Ross Lyon used to sprout when he was in his last few seasons. He was incapable of change so delegated to his assistants - it didn't mean shit in the end.

North looking even shitter today down by 70 points at 3 QTR time. Looking like a real cripple fight come round 1.

Still managed 57 inside 50s for the match against the Bulldogs' 63.

Kangaroos undone decisively from stoppage in that match - hardly our strong point.

If Naitanui and Darling are still missing I feel things could start getting ugly here very quickly.
