Carlton will be decent in 2023, and they beat us last year too. Lynch would be a massive out if he missed round 1 so hopefully he's there. Obviously it's a long season so it's not the be all and end all, but I reckon if Lynch misses Carlton might be the tip.

they only beat us in that first game cos prestia went down and the umps crucified us again with those 50s over dissent. we led for the whole game until prestia gone took its toll and the umps started ripping 50metre penalties out of their dirty bums

used as guinea pigs again

we flogged them in the return game

Agreed Lynch would be a massive out. But think we can kick a winning score, with Dusty back, Shai up there, and Cumberland ready to explode.
Think we’ll have a very even spread of goal kickers this season, expecting the smalls and medium forwards to be prominent

Not so sure without Lynch.
Jacks on his last legs.
Cumberland had a great 2nd half but clubs would've done their homework on him.
Without Lynch it makes it alot easier for oppos to cover Dusty & Bolton.
Against top 8 sides we need Lynch.

Lynch was the best kick it to player in the league last year. Top contested mark, gets his hand to or crashes packs better than anyone, so without him we would have nobody to do that. Jack used to do it but can't really get off the ground anymore.

We have nobody who can do that. Miller but he will be a leading type. Ryan too slow but at least you can kick it too him but pretty immobile. Bauer, hits the ball hard a but big ask. Young maybe, but he's played a handful of VFL games. Biggy, need to up his aggression 100%. Balta would give it a go, but do we want to mess him around again. The only one who could do it but never has is old man Tarrant. Good in the air, good hands, tough and might be good for a laugh.

All those other guys are great, but Lynch is the point of difference. None of them are long down the line bail out targets. Lynch is the collosus that can destroy a pack and take out 2 big defenders. He's our most important player by far IMO in terms of lack of coverage.

What a great world we inhabit when Collingwood and Carlton supporters all claim they're coming off their best year for a decade when neither makes the GF and one of them hasn't even made the finals 🤣

It's always fun watching their supporters build up their hopes.....

Agree with all that, particularly re Lynch being our most important player, just saying though I reckon we can still win R1 without him.
Nobody in our side is capable of playing anywhere near his capacity, so you manufacture scores in other ways. And that’s where we are lucky we have enough medium and smalls capable of kicking multiple goals.
Balta/Miller/ Reiwoldt/ whoever, just need to compete and even out aerial contests.

Think I read in this thread that we’ve been training to bring the ball to the ground in marking contests (preferably to our smalls advantage). Wouldn’t surprise me if this type of tactic is used when Lynch is not there. Bring the ground level players into it.

The thing you don’t want happening is opposition kpbs zoning off and taking easy intercept marks.

That's all well and good as our ground fleet are pretty good, but not having a big physical presence to kick it to means the intercept markers like Stewart and Lever have a field day. That was the case in '21 when we could not get it past the half forward line for long periods at a time. You can never replace the great marking forwards especially if they can kick straight (Lynch v Rich).

If we have to play without Lynch then we need a similar replacement hence a bit tongue in cheek I mentioned Tarrant, although I think it has merit as he would be the closest seasoned physical marking player we have. Plus I think he'd love it.
