All evidence to date proves this is utterly false.

We've shaken every tree for nearly a decade (warchest and all) and the only thing that fell out was a broken hannebery.

Believing this is no different to believing in unicorns or selfless politicians.

The issue is we've been shit.

Play good footy and we'll be a more attractive proposition.

We've haven't exactly been brimming with young talent either. Things are looking a lot better for us there too.

Yep, when we had good seasons we managed to get Crouch and Henry afterwards.

We're in a bit of a catch 22 situation where we need to get good to get players in and probably retain good players, but the path is there.

Good post. Most people don't see the lengths of performance management a club goes through in measuring and testing for strains and injuries in the high performance field.
Players are being pushed physically to extremes but that's just how training is done.
The staff monitor very closely but sometimes muscle just snaps when it's pushed to extremes.
People put a label on that like 'over training' because it seems to connect the dots, but it's just part of it, they're very careful in preparation.
The RTB mantra is train as you play…high intensity brings injury risk.
It’s not ideal our recent injuries but we must move on and back in the replacements that get opportunities.
Match sim was of a high standard yesterday with some excellent performances!

completely agree. people talk about injuries as issues. injuries create opportunities that may never otherwise happen.

if it wasn't for injury, we would have never unearthed Marshall, Sharman etc.

you have to train how you play...or you play how you train

Good to hear all the positive feedback being posted from those keeping an eye on things.

Think the concern is. The club has yes recruited defenders. None of them are tall enough to play FB as a no.1 defender. They're all shorter defenders who can play on 2nd or 3rd tall forwards. Concerning now that there is no cover for Howard. But think with Enright there he will take a few under his wing like he did with Battle and turn them into handy defenders.
Barratt (194cm) and Boyd (198cm) can play key def. RTB likes versatile players that can cover multiple positions, and that goes for almost all of our draft picks this year. I wouldn't be so quick to pigeon hole Boyd as a ruckman only for us.

Edit: Barratt will likely sprout another 2-3cm before he stops growing.

Took a couple of nice marks in the 4th period but was well beaten for the rest (like every other defender on the B team). Seemed to be changing between Owens and Higgins.
McLennan played predominantly on Owens and did a good job!
Played a bit on Sharman also & kept him quiet.
He reads the play extremely well & is a strong one grab mark.

Thanks
Was hoping he might be playing a bit taller than his height but seems to be more the other way.

Any chance of a backline of Wilkie, McLennan and Cordy with Schoenmaker off the bench? or too small?
Caminiti's delayed pre-season and inexperience as a defender doesnt have me convinced it is the starting combo

Battle is listed at 193cm these days i'm sure he used to be shorter. We always considered him a bit too short for the modern key defender role.
Now McLennan is 188, same height as Webster.

Sicily is 188, and a bit of a freak at that height.

From Footywire:
Heath 204cm 97kg
Dodson 203cm 96kg
King 202cm 100kg
Marshall 201cm 105kg.
Howard 199cm 94kg
Boyd 198cm 108kg.
Keeler 198cm 91kg
Caminiti 196cm 85kg
Cordy 195cm 92kg
Barrat 194cm 92kg
Schoenmaker 194cm 91kg
Tauru 193cm 94kg
Sharman 193cm 88kg
Macrae 192cm 89kg
Wood 192cm 86kg
Armstrong 191cm 89kg
Owens 191cm 91kg
Wilkie 191cm 88kg
I think I have seen King listed at 204 cm He is at least as tall as Heath in that photo.

Our defensive line is going to be relatively inexperienced, regardless of who is given Battles vacant role.

My guess it will be something like:

Wilkie - Cordy - Webster
Naz - Schoenmaker - Sinclair

We’re going to need Wood and Wilson to roll back through and lend a hand. And I can see the likes of our tall forwards, Caminiti, Keeler and Sharman being sent back to help when the opposition has got momentum.

But at the end of the day, our new look midfield will be what determines exactly how much stress the backline will be under.

As disappointing as it is I think we can cover Pou at this stage of his career. A midfield without Marshall feels bleak though.

Steele and Macrae hopefully stay fit and healthy and hit the ground running, literally. Then the likes of Windhager, Jones and Garcia are going to have to step up.

Boxhall looks like he has a natural ability to find the pill and has a decent engine. I wouldn’t be shy to throw him in the mix if it meant getting first hands to the ball at clearance 5-6 times a game, regardless of the quality of his disposal.

Don’t think we’ve worked out how to best use Ari yet. He’s not a stopper but does expose opposition from HB.
This year hopefully the brains trust work it out.

Daniel Rich role. A rebounding loose attacking player off HB. We have Nas and Sincs so I guess as Sincs starts to get to retirement age Ari takes over that role. Rich could bypass the midfield on the rebound and have the ball at CHF off a turn over.

Lyon used to drop McEvoy across HB to use as the spare back in the day. If we have 2 fit rucks he might like to bulk out the defence that way.

I think if you still had Howard as the key back there would have been enough coverage to roll with Ari in that role but I think plan B might not addird that. Not sure. Preseason will be an interesting watch.

A Charvel super strat.....

Yeah, he's got a unique style so definitely not a straight Strat. I'm thinking something precision and off broadway. Some handcrafted 80s headless German thing with tricked out synth electronics or a colour overload Steve Vai Jem.

Agreed and until Max can put a solid full year of football together, he shouldn't be celebrated like he is some super star. He has the potential to be many things, but until he can do it consistently without breaking down in my view he is just a good player nothing more.

Having Cordy as our backup key defender on a 3 year contract has been farcical. The guy is only just an average VFL player, who is the worst runner at the club by a long way. Gallagher completely stitched us up on that deal, but even worse the club haven't made an effort to find a decent replacement until this year.

The club must have suspected Battle was a good chance to leave fairly early on in negotiations, yet left chasing a replacement in Brodie Kemp until the last minute. Now with the loss of Battle and Howard to injury they are going to start the season completely under prepared down back. Cordy is an absolute spud but because of a lack of experience they will almost be forced to play him. Shoenmaker is not ready defensively wise, Barrat is just a kid and its unfair to put that burden on someone so young & playing Caminiti at CHB was acceptable if he had the experience of Howard & Wilkie around him.

Recruiting has definitely improved at the club but this (key defender) disaster was staring them in the face and it should have been addressed well before the last draft period. The recent injuries have highlighted how paper thin our list is on experience and quality.

Without settled and competent key defensive talls I can see opposition forward lines getting a hold of us and the club really struggling. If we are unlucky enough to lose Marshall for a considerable period we can nearly garuantee a bottom 4 finish in my view.

Cordy is a depth KP swingman. Pretty much what he is here for is this situation. He's no star but he's quite adequate to step in and play a role. Good defences are about synchronicity more than the pieces. He at least knows the drills and positioning that we are after.

Having another A grade midfielder in Macrae hopefully puts less pressure on the defence as well.
