Pies will be basing themselves out at the Southport Sharks on the Gold Coast from 17th to 21st of Feb for a training camp. They’ll be using the clubs ground and Gym over those 4 days whilst staying at the on-site hotel.
They will be doing Match sim vs GC Suns and the lions at the Peoples first stadium on the 20th.
Wonderful, my neighbourhood. The club isn't bad, and there with a great view of the ground. Will diarise those dates.

Hey Jen,
Is Tuesday training on at 12.30 today? Thinking of driving down with the young fella, but don't want to waste a 6hr round trip 😅

Everyone trained except Nick and Titch

De Goey seems to be ramping back up. Did some of the lighter drills and then spent time jogging the boundary with Bobby

Most players were happy to sign and pose for photos after they were done. Daughter got a bunch of snaps with the boys and even Fly which was great

A mate from Sydney met me there who I converted from Geelong (lol) who got his jumper signed too

Good morning in the end

We did see Mitchell at the very end when everyone was going inside remember. Not sure what he was doing, but it wasn't for long.

No Nick or Mitchell. But everyone else is here
My bet is Nick will have a couple of weeks inside doing stuff that doesn't require running, where his only running is on an anti-gravity treadmill. If he's pain free they'll gradually increase the weight he has to bare on the treadmill before returning to full training after he ticks off full weight on a treadmill.

Got a closer look at that bloke

It wasn't Mitchell lol

Just looked a LOT like him

Always amazes how you know this stuff, whether its a wild or educated guess, always highly plausible.

It was a pretty chill session. No match play - I assume that will be on friday. Fair amount of drills. A couple new ones I hadnt seen before.

I'll put up some video later tonight after I get back from VFL training.
Everyone was there apart from Nick, and Mitchell for the most part (he did come out at the end of the session)

Josh, Bobby, Jordy partook in some drills, then did some running. Jordy seems to be progressing, more than last week, so it's a good step in the right direction.
I'm not too worried about Josh, he was running well and did earlier drills. I think he'll be back fully training soon.

Harrison continued his rehab, doing lots of running and change of turning. He's past 5 months post ACL now.

The young draftees were managed a bit today. Did some drills, but then sat out (or more stood in the middle) and watched some other drills.

First session of 2025 for Pendles and HTM.

For a ruck, I noticed Oscar is a pretty good kick, which isn't always the case for big boys in that position.

I'm glad I bought my gf jumper, got a few more signatures. One more left, Bobby and I'm done.

It was nice to finally catch up with Cousin of Daicos ! Took a look in the shop and the museum as well.

Dropped not long ago on fb
A deep blue sky punctuated by some banks of benign white clouds greeted the players who didn’t enter the arena until after ten. Josh was the first to emerge but he only went through his paces for just over an hour. Houston and Schultz followed him quickly. The ground is in pristine condition despite being saturated with a 25 mm deluge in a few minutes on Sunday. Quite a few youngsters bedecked in their match day attire ringed the fence in anticipation of autographs and pics and some were not disappointed when they were close enough to obliging players who provided the coveted signatures. The sun had considerable bite. In weather parlance – it was twenty-three, but felt like thirty-three.

There were two players not sighted this morning – Nick and Tom Mitchell. In contrast to last Friday, the Harrys were there and participated in full training, while Hill and Moore did the majority of drills. Harrison appeared briefly.

For the record the roll call, separated into those wearing black or white is below, though which shade of polarity being donned is probably irrelevant at this stage of proceedings.

In general rehab news – After the initial warm-up activities, Josh, Cochran, Hayes and West headed over to partake of some alternative work on the outer side, later shooting for goals and kicking vigorously, so it was probably a load-management initiative.. WHE withdrew from some aspects of the main fare, briefly watching on and then undertaking some running around the oval. JDG was involved in parts of main training but completed a lot of running with Hill. Later in the session, Cox appeared to hurt himself during contested duels and after being prostrate and slightly raised rubbing his back, he walked off rather gingerly. It appeared to be a hip/back concern. Sullivan ran many laps on his own.

Prior to warming up it was interesting to see the players gravitate to like groups. It resembled the microcosm of classrooms all around the state. This has occurred in previous sessions too and reflects how players bond, partly driven by age and draft cohorts. For example, Hayes, Steene, Allan, Ryan Harry D and West seem to have become good buddies while the mid-range players fraternise and the oldest group sticks together. Houston as a newcomer looks comfortable and settled, ditto Membrey, while Perryman seems to be seeking his comfort zone.

Limbering up today involved the resistance tape, the brandishing of rods above the head, some hip swivelling with the same rods and players were instructed to rotate through the apparatus set up.

Quickly following was some high energy sprints, both forward and backward and players were urged to attack their running with zest and to keep coming fast.
They moved to an agility activity, working in pairs, dodging poles while carrying balls with the objective of baulking an opponent. The elusiveness of Pendles was evident here. It was interesting to see some mismatches such as Steene and Ryan, with the latter proving too nimble for the taller man. This went on for a protracted period.

Following this was a precision kicking drill, also seen on Friday whereby players drilled the ball to one another over medium range. There seems to be quite an emphasis this summer on striving for more pinpoint delivery by foot.
The players had their first rehydration break and after their collective thirst was sated, Wade addressed them as they were encircled by a group of players from the NRL club St. George. He introduced them individually to the boys, even using their sobriquets as he explained that he’s familiar with them from his days at the Rabbitohs. The introductions were accompanied by raucous applause from the players and Wade let slip that they will be with our program over the next three days.

After this interesting hiatus, players divided into three stations for some contrasting activities which they rotated through. There was a paired activity, one focussed on quick handball movement through congestion and one on the outer side where players ran to position to accept the kick. Yellow and lime vests were worn by players to distinguish pairing within the drill.

The one closest to the pavilion was absorbing and dual pronged in focus. For the first half of what turned out to be a long time allocated to these station sets, honing footwork skills was the sharp focus. Players cleaved so that each faced the other and the one with the ball had to be agile enough to keep evading the other while opposite him. One could see how these micro movements occur during games and can be the difference between eluding an opponent or being caught.

During this group of activities, Lippa had his guernsey torn and replaced it with a #6 top. Howe is also sporting this number at the moment with excess availability here due to Mitchell’s absence. A track watcher informed me that Tom said he is progressing well.

After the refreshment break, players were loud in affirmation of one another as they coaxed continued application before sprinting back to work in the centre.

In the middle of the ground, Josh Fraser took the rucks – Smit, Cox, Steene and Cameron but this was largely centred around drilling their short-range kicking. Another group held balls aloft and passed to each other keeping their one hand above their heads, alternating as if on a cross-trainer. This seemed in essence also to be based around coordination.

The large drill on the pavilion side was energetic comprising a large group of players with some donning black and the others a tan vest. It was very willing – a mini keepings off which was performed at electric speed and pleasingly slick hands. Moore and Pendles were vocal here and sometimes suggested variations to this activity. The coaches constantly urged players to “Use the space” and barked at those receiving at the back of the pack to be “more vocal” in calling for the ball. This was certainly a high-octane drill and players from the outer side of the ground activity had their turn at rotating into it. Coaches were generous in yelling “Well done” when the actions were well executed.

Following this there was some robust burst sprinting between cones, while other players focussed on goalkicking and general hand and foot skills.

There were some one on one duels taking place as pairs jostled for position to take marks from longish kicks. Howe enjoyed ribbing Frammers for being taken to the cleaners during his long joust with Cameron whose sticky hands and contested marking would be challenge for any of his teammates.

There was no match simulation today, perhaps due to the hiking on Saturday. Will be looking forward to seeing this on Friday.

Some random observations of players:

Harry D. is zippy in terms of his elusiveness and ability to find space. He also looked clean kicking at goal from long range but does he lack some strength in a contest? He was caught easily and unable to break through in some of the combative drills but is this by dint of his youth?

McStay – touch wood that he can stay fit as he looks in incredible shape. He’s moving well, sometimes bellying his impressive size, is showcasing good skills and looks uber confident. Can we get our first full season out of Dan? If we do he looks like being a very productive member of the forward set-up.

Allan has definitely put on upper body size. It was instructive to see him vying with Crisp during duels. He is clearly taller than Jack and help his own despite the latter looking in as good form as ever. Will be interesting to see where he places and if he commands an immediate spot. He was offered encouragement from teammates when ticking the right boxes during drills.

Smit – is an impressive looking unit and he tackles his work with enthusiasm. His colleagues clearly want him to succeed as he was receiving repeated loud affirmation for his work today.

IQ – he was a standout last summer, only to disappoint in relative terms during the season proper. Apart from acing the yo yo test through he is dominating drill with the celerity of his movements. He looks to have fined down without losing that sense of having a compact frame composed of hard muscle.

Reef – also looks more defined and looked nippy and skilful during drills. He’s another one whose destiny will intrigue the fans around selection time. With some of our acquisitions and his possible move to defence, it will be interesting to see the composition of our backline.

Schultz – is nothing else, he’s a superb tackler. He notably had a vice like grip on players when he caught them during the various drills and he was not averse to dragging them to the ground. Like how the defence is shaping up, all eyes will also be on how the forward line structure is managed if our list remains healthy.

Houston – apart from his bullet like passes executed with accuracy, he appears to be good below his knees and quite evasive and able to find spaces.

Some superficial observations:

Membrey fits in well with his tattoos.

Some onlookers aren’t fans of Oleg’s luxuriant beard

Crisp is also sporting a beard.

Moore’s darker shade of blond and shorter hair has won approval

Players such as Sidey, Beau, Ryan and Schultz trained in caps today to ward off the sun’s stinging rays.

Before training there was a flurry of activity with much replacement of sofas taking place. It seems there are some corporate events linked with the tennis, speaking of which some patrons from the long queues appeared to add ballast to those watching from various vantage spots today.
