Pre-season training: January 22.

9:30-11:30

Rehab:

HH continuing his post ACL recovery doing some lateral movements, and moving side to side holding a stick above his head.
Jordy did some running, but was also involved in some drills.

Josh was seen in some drills, he'll be back in full training next week.

The draftees were absent, plus parker and Smit as I figured around this time of year was the induction for the kids entering the afl. Given Parker and Smit were either taken mid season or after this time of year, it was something they missed last year.

It was a light craft based session that focused on the fundamentals. Line groups. Pressure drill that seemed to focus on using defence to create offence. So maybe around using turnover to attack by using pressure.

Later there was a drill focused on transition, which was interesting to see how quick they want to move the ball. Lets see how it comes off in games.

I've heard that Coxy's grandfather has passed away and that's his reason for his return home.

Players of note:

During the transition drill, Reef's marking and spoiling, using the defence as attack was prominent.
Macrae used the ball well coming out of HF and through the ground with good quick hands in transition.
Steene battled well against DC, who is much stronger, but he did well aerially and in the contest. You can clearly see he has put on some size. Hopefully gets a decent run at injury this year.

Pendles was very vocal in the drills, working his magic as he continues to lean into the coaching side of things.

Jakob Ryan told us that Friday's session will be brutal! So it may be one to head down to check out. More match sim I am anticipating.

Great work as always Jen, would like to head down on Friday as I'm taking a loooong weekend, do you know what time training is on?
Thanks!

Well I kicked my 13 year old of bed at 5am and made the trip to the Big Smoke. I' honestly have no idea when it comes to cities, but apparently parking is hard to find and there was this thing called Tennis on as well. Wound the window down and asked like I was Crocodile Dundee where a bloke could park. Back over the Yarra near the tan and we were in business.

We'd missed the start but not by much as they were still doing warm up drills. McStay and Reef were prominent to my eye. McStay moving and marking well, and Reef looking like he's put on size but seems very confident and comfortable in his new role. Mc Stay did cop a poke in the eye but came good.

Peddles ran a drill and gave out instructions to the participants. I couldn't hear what was said, but when he talked, everyone listened intensely and then got to work. To me, it seemed the objective was when possession was taken on centre wing between centre square and boundary, was to move it quickly by gaining ground or by hand to centre corridor before a short kick to half forward rather than a long 45° pass.

The pressure drill with back, white and yellow teams was actually really good to see. Intensity was high and there was plenty of solid tackles and collisions.

The short duration match play was also great to see. About 2 minutes then a rest and into it again. Once again at good intensity and loved seeing the players in the flesh how they moved.

My take aways;

Darcy Cameron - his marking last year was no flash on the pan. Matched against Steene, his body positioning and judging was superb. I think I saw him drop one and two spoiled out of 20.
Deadset clunking machine. Steene deserves a mention here, up against a master at his craft and didn't drop his head or get frustrated. Kept competing without any bad body language. I like that a lot. Here's hoping he has a good run with injury and can develop.

Tim Membrey - he's that sort of inbetween size, but not much smaller than Mihoceck, but noticeably larger in the chest and upper body than Reef, who seems to have muscle built on top of a lean athletic build. Membrey moves and marks well, and I can see him really being a handful as a third tall or injury back up.

Dan Houston - (insert Randy from South Park at computer meme). This bloke is going to surprise the hell out of most Victorians who never watched Port play. In a drill that started with a short kick out of Full back and Houston got on to this several times. The first, his options didn't really pan out so he bombed it long to McStay contest, but every other time, he picked apart the opposing defence with beautifully weighed kicks to good options. Honestly, with him, Pendles, Nick Daicos moving the ball up the field, there is going to be some clinical ball movement.

Perryman - he's going to be a good addition. To my eye he's that rotating with Pendles as defensive inside mid. He was working with one of the coaches after training on movement ack off the mark before kicking. Seems coach able and hard working.

DeGoey - moving well, no trouble with last years injury. Building nicely.

Long - seeing as he was requested earlier. Good size and strong. Busy in the drills without dominating but good to have a big bodied mid to develop without needing him to play now. He did take one really difficult mark from a Pendles kick today, running backwards, overhead and twisting. Not an easy one but those long arms came in handy.

Ryan looking fit and has put on some size, going to give Tarrant a run in the guns department if he keeps it up.

Allan - loved his last game and really hope to see him kick on this year and put pressure on midfield. Tall and moves around effortlessly, didn't see that pace he has but keen to see his third year.

Big shout out to Jen and everyone else who contributes to the training thread. It's not easy keeping an eye on everyone, but it is very much appreciated by all who read this thread.

I think it was McStays parents next to us, he came over and chatted to them after training. He very graciously signed my sons junior membership football so he was thrilled.

With the additions to the team this year, I'm excited to see what's in store for us supporters.

Some observations from todays training from my perspective.

- Lots of work on transition. It was AFL level clean for the most part, but my sense for it was there were a few times where individuals held the ball too long. It was the type of stuff that would result in a missed hit up lead or getting caught ball in hand. Nothing major just a little 1% I think we could find.

- Pendles is omnipresent with every group he trains in. I’m not just talking leading with voice rather he’s as hands on if not more than the assistant coaches. It’s an interesting dynamic to watch at training because my first instinct is “does that undermine the coaches?”, but they’re pros so I’m certain it has no impact there and is a significant factor on field.

- the only guy outside the 23 that stood out to me was Allan. He’s big and imposing for a 20yo mid, but most importantly he was clean and heavily involved. One of those guys that the ball just seems to follow and he did everything spot on while I was paying attention at least.

- No Naicos that I saw. JDG was involved in about half the drills. Reef seemed to go in early possibly due to delayed effects from a clash he had with McReery, but I had to head off so he might have come back out. McReery I assume passed a HIA after the collision or at least got checked out because he went inside then came back out 10-15 later.

I don’t have a baseline to compare it to so I’ve got no context to a lot of what I saw, but there’s a couple I’ll be watching closer than others if I get the chance to attend next week.

Edit: Joel Selwood was in attendance standing with Fly before training. Maybe I’ve missed something there, but if that’s not a once off I wasn’t aware of that connection before today.
Love this.

Great summary Memo , fantastic that your little champ got McStays autograph , he will never forget been with his Dad on that day , childhood memory that last , takes me back to when Dad took me and my sisters to Victoria Park. Memories are embedded ❤️

Jen2310 can confirm it was AFLPA draftee induction day yesterday.
I did notice Smit, and the draftees were absent, and noticed Parker in a club Polo, not dressed for training.
Thought it might have been a training management for the younger players. Bit of a shame, I was keen to get a look at Smit, Hayes and West.

I’ll get some whispers from induction day later.

But I’m already told that West up close is a very large solid unit.

Great write up mate.

Looks like Perryman is primed to play that defensive midfield role, rotating with Pendles.

He should be a big asset in balancing out our midfield, and should help keep us Nick and hopefully a fully fit Jordy free licensed to play their attacking midfield styles.
