Most positive I've been on the club in years. Recruiting has done a good job bringing in talent and hitting some later/rookie draft picks. Just a shame we couldn't nail a few of the blue chip picks :(

Hinge/Sloane settled on a wing is great for structure, both play the role really well it helps us move the ball and let the bulls do their thing.

Forward like will worry many teams. Fog looks like he's going to be top 10 in the coleman.

Midfield is promising, bit of development to go for everyone bar Laird in there. No Crouch is a tick, he's looked better but no second position means he shouldn't be in the 1s with Laird and Berry.

Def is held together by Dawson, Murray looks improved but Butts not so much. Hope we target a KPD in FA.

Think the list is still a star mid/forward short but otherwise I like where we are going.

Is anyone else in shock? Like I know preseason but we look good, like way better than we have been in a long time, these young kids are killing it today it's great to see

We just need to temper ourselves by understanding most still are kids - we will tire in some games and as the season progresses

There has been a fair bit of sarcasm over the last 12 months from some regarding the “magical 50 games” when the more optimistic have suggested this is where we need to get too to improve.
This game shows how much improvement another pre season can provide an extremely young squad - and that when they start becoming fit enough to compete more consistently they improve rapidly. But also the older players around them look better as they don’t need to absorb all the pressure
Not all about games played although important - but definitely pre seasons completed are critical

And a more mature squad even makes a coach look okay!

I always felt Keays was rushed and kicked like a crab at times ie body position forward. Was he more composed tonight?

IMO its always been mental with him. When he is in the midfield everything is a million miles an hour and he is just rushed and panics. Its not just his kicking that suffers, but the amount of time I have seen him run around in a circle because he doesn't know what to do is significant. He is the reverse Pendlebury. I also think a lack of a right foot hurts him.

It was showcased in his 2nd quarter goal. Takes a mark inside 50 - kinda panics about what to do and makes the wrong decision to kick 8 meters backward to Rachele. Rachele then evades a couple of players and gives the ball back to Keays who knows he is wide open. He then calmly runs in and kicks it beautifully from 30 metres out on a tight angle.

Keays should be a perfect addition to the forward line. He should be a lot more composed in all that space across half forward and he will mostly just have to beat one opponent and get the ball in space where he can use it correctly.

Just looking at the back end of the game from another angle, west coast got some good play happening from halfway through the 3rd and into the last. Forget the scoreboard for a minute as we were always well ahead, but an uninterrupted run of 3 goals and lots of possession with one where west coast moved the ball around down back then went coast to coast shows that we need to really work hard on our defensive action to stop a side getting a run on. Better sides than west coast will really punish us if we can't break the cycle.

Where i am going here is i was specifically looking for how we were structuring up when west coast got that mini run on to see how to close it down and our patterns of defensive play.

Yep inconsistency is a given

Nice to see we have some bigger bodies now and some powerful units

We will certainly have some decent wins and test some good teams this year at times

It's sad to read the Pear board. All those knowledgeable footy experts that thought a couple years ago they'd win 3 out of 5 reduced to a depressed mob without hope.
We should all tell them how sorry we are for them.

My quick takeaways from last night:

-Murray looks fitter and more composed
-Hinge effectively replacing Seed, body finally starting to get right
-Loved how clean Rachele looks in traffic, he did quite a few moves/dance steps that just dazzled the opposition
-Soligo/Berry starting to really show their stuff.
-Tex getting the best defender each week will really help Fog

Not to be that guy, but has anyone commented on how well coached we looked?

Disciplined, very well structured, players always seemed to be where their teammates expected them to be, and the defensive focus was fantastic
I did yesterday and they say I’m all negative….

The selections were bang on, Dawson even spent time on the wing.

The pressure was immense and our quick ball movement was a delight to watch and look at the score we racked up and what we kept them too as a result.

We are going to put a lot of defences under pressure if we move quickly and well. Then the forward line pressure will kick in if we spill it.
