I thought Wicks was so clearly our BOG last night. His energy and attack on every contest was elite and he made so many things happen.

Gulden and Jordon got a lot of the ball - our outside players always rack up possessions with the way our game plan exists - but neither were that damaging.

Jordon in particular I wasn't overly enamoured with. He was fine, and definitely earned his round 1 spot, but his performance was just a bit 'meh' for mine. Accumulated without much impact. Feel like it was a lot of handball receives and then roosting it down the line or handballing to a guy under pressure who would then give it back to Jordon. Just wasn't much thought or process behind much of what he did. I think this is reflected in the fact that only 2 of his 31 touches ended up as score involvements. It's great he can find space and find the ball but if he's going to feel like a damaging player for us going forward, I'd like a bit more quality over quantity.

Gulden on the other hand just looked rusty, but his intent was there and the cream will always rise to the top.

Only a pre-season game. I'll back em in.

Also really loved the first showing from the McCartin & Melican partnership I think the club has wanted to happen for years now. Gee whiz I hope they can both stay fit and play 23 games at least for us this year.

Just such a strangely coached game… mebbe it was simply running players through and managing time. The bombing it forward without much thought or game sense worked as well as it always has for Horse.

I wonder who has stepped up to the Don P tactician role?

That to me is one the questions unanswered by the pre- season.

We know Horses long suit is building relationships (except with those he apparently* does not like Allir, Mitchell etc) and he and Don formed a pretty dynamic team. Some of my favourite off field vision was Don running through the tactics on the white board and then Horse interpreting and reinforcing for the team.

I wonder which staff member will step up to the plate. I have no doubt Don was able to have a robust disagreement with H and vice versa

Legitimate question. I actually rate Roberts but last week he looked out of his depth as a backman, which was surprising as the Swans were bullish on his preseason. Last night he was better, but still not a star, however a number of posters have said he is a lock for next week. This may be so, but I also think he was keeping Lloyd's spot warm for him, so if Roberts is a lock then what happens to Lloyd?

I also think that the temperature dictated how we were coached as well. As soon as it was evident we would be playing in a sauna a week before our first match our coaching staff probably looked to get some miles in legs (without being too fancy) but then not over-exerting players at the same time. We probably just wanted to get through it without it impacting on our stamina for next week, so I'm not judging our season by last night.

Who said he's a lock , if Jake is fit , he plays

That's why i surprised by Gawn playing a whole game in 35 degree heat the night before

Nothing happens to Lloyd.

In 223 games and 10 years, Lloyd has never been dropped. It's not gonna happen now.

I personally think there's a chance Roberts is the sub, or possibly even spends some time on a wing to allow a Jordon to spend more time inside, where he didn't look totally out of his depth.

I'll also add my praise of Ladhams to the chorus. Yes, he made some mistakes, but last night he looked like he was actually invested in the game as opposed to some of the games he played last season. If he maintains that effort throughout the season (and doesn't have any brain farts that end up with spending weeks in the naughty corner) then he will go a long way to winning me over.

And I know that is what he wants, by the way - to win me over would be a burning desire of his...it's normal.

I think the focus was about fitness and trying things out rather than getting the gameplan down pat.

2 games in a preseason is really so short, not much you can gain which cannot be gained in training

Dos it was humid , believe me
Yep, it was. I'm in Melbourne these days but grew up in Sydney and I have to say that Sydney gets more humid, however if the temp is high 30s then a few % extra humidty probably becomes a bit irrelevant, admittedly.

All to say, I agree that playing Gawn for an entire match could end up in our favour - especially if it is humid next Thursday night and Grundy sat out half of our match.

Don't be fn silly DB. He played every game last year up to the prelim.
I'd like to see you get up and walk away after someone falls on your leg whilst it's being twisted,
Yes, that’s fair. It was 2022 he tore the groin (badly), not last year.

At first I thought it was a soft tissue injury. Which is always going to be the concern with the “more mature” recruits.

I withdraw all previous statements on the matter.

you get that common sense outa here!

I was there last night and sitting right between the swans bench and the interchange gates. It definitely looked to me like the humid conditions meant that we were just trying to get miles into the legs and manage as best as they could. Lions were pretty much full strength and we were missing quite a few key players, so the final score actually gave me hope.

I thought Rowy was great, ladhams went well which was a pleasant surprise, melican was great in the backline and seemed to work well with Tommy. 3 talls up forward isn't going to work with our strategy of bombing long...Joel A looked lost out there at times which disappointed me because I've predicted he's in for a big year.

Interesting footnote....Paddy Mc was there with the team last night so we must have given him a job post-retirement.

yeah, geez ... focus on the good, don't dwell too much on the bad ...
we're going ok for a first serious run, against a grand final team ...
some of the wailing and gnashing of teeth is so lacking in any perspective ...
It's an unfortunate reality that 90% of those here can only see the negatives of last night. I said hours before the game started that we should take no notice of the result as Brisbane were at full strength other than Ashcroft yet we had at least 6 of our best 22 not playing.
As to the 3 forwards, it was a shocking night for key forwards as the ball was like a cake of soap. I'm taking no notice of what happened tonight. The selection panel should be aware that when we play again in slippery dewey conditions we should go one tall less.
On the bright side, Jordan proved that he will be an exceptionally good inclusion to the squad and Mexican looked ok Gulden was just Gulden. Ladhams showed that he could handle the job if Grundy cops an injury.
It's possible that Haywood played himself out of our first game.
Most coaches go into these games to see what players can do a certain job. They are not as worried about the scores as we are.
I'm not losing any sleep.
