the 08 season officialy went down the drain today as we were beaten by a underdog hawthorn, we did not deserve to win today, they were the better side on the day that counted, what is the frustrating thing for all Geelong supporters is that we have been the better side all year, yet did not bring it on the day that counted.

But all we can do now is pick up the pieces from today, and strive for success in the 09 season, the window has not closed on us yet, all of our players will still be their next season, you would not expect any of them to dropp off, all of our older players such as Harley Milburn Scarlett and mooney are all players who do not get injured, you would expect them to be able to perform well for a couple more years.

What let us down significantly today was the way in which our forward line operated, the Hawthorn rebound from the backline was really damaging, we had no one who stood up and kicked goals, between the 6 forwards we had a combined total of 7 goals, Mooney: 2 Longeran: 2 Johnson: 1 Varcoe: 0 Stokes: 1? Chapman: 1

you can not win games of football kicking 11 goals, it is as simple as that.

for us to be a chance of a premiership in 09 i believe these things must happen

1. Hawkins must take his game to the next level and be a regular performer at senior level. it is clear as crystal that Lonergan is not good enough.

2. Establish a reliable CHB, whether it be Egan having a full pre season and coming back into the side, or Taylor stepping his game up a level, we need to fill this position and cement it

3. To not overposess and be fancy with the ball, last year the Geelong team was all about moving the ball on quickly and taking risks, backing themselves everytime, this season the Geelong team has been all about getting everyone involved in the play, sharing it around, instead of just backing yourself and sending it straight through the guts of the ground like we were doing last year.

Today was a heartaching defeat, but the reality is that we are not burried yet, this side is still capable of having one more shot at it.

I know i will be their round one of next year waving the flagg high, hopping on board the long 22 round rollercoaster ride of emotions and highs, for better or worse, and i know every other true blue and white supporter will be too.

Reality Check:

Geelong have a 1/16 chance of winning the Premiership ;)

New season, new mind, new attitude. Remember, 2006 was a different year than 2007 ;)

Although, Egan is an exciting comeback!

Only thing i would like to see is hawkins given a rel push through the pre-season, i still think we far a fair way above the other teams even after todays loss.

selwood can only get better, ablett bartel corey etc are peaking in the next 2-3 years, if we didnt kick 11 points in a row...

as long as you guys keep your list together you'll be a huge chance over the next 2-3 years. the salary cap is the key.

i remember Essendon losing Heffernan, Blumfield, and Caracella all in the one year. that was the beginning of the end.
followed by Hardwick and Moorcroft the year after.
plus, retirements such as Long, Bewick, Wallis, a few others
..... and then suddenly -> GONE.

don't let it happen to you.

I just found out Paul Newman died of cancer.

Anway back to footy.

We have some players signed on for a few years, theres hardly anyone out of contract, they stuck together like Brisbane did :D

That's why you're in trouble. You have no forwards. You are stuck with Mooney. He is no better than Will Minson. The fakes that got shown up today - Mooney, Stokes, Enright, Lonergan, Corey

Harsh on Enright and Corey. They have been wonderful all year. Hird played a shocker in 2001 Grand Final does that make him a fake? No, it doesnt. Players have their off days, Enright and Corey both where not at their brilliant best but they where not along and there where quite a few who where considerably worse than them.

I really hope we give some of the younger guys a chance at the top level. Would love to see Hawkins given the whole season in the side to see what he can produce.

Lonergan looked really out of place today, as much as i love and respect the bloke im not sure that he can hold down FF or CHF. Would love to see Hawkins and Simpson in the foward line at some stage next year.

Stokes was horrible today and has been for many weeks. He was extremely luck to keep his spot and he did nothing. Im not convinced that him and Varcoe can work in the same team. Both dont get enough of the ball and i think Varcoe has a lot more upside.

As for Mooney, I think he will be gone either end of next year or at the end of 2010. Either retired or to GC. I hate the way he always trys to give it off when in scoring range. His our number one forward yet he doesnt like to shoot at goal. He is paid to kick goal and sometimes you just need to go back and have a shot rather than always passing.

Just my two cent.

Not too cocky now eh?

I dont think the forward line was as big a problem as you make it out to be. The delivery was pretty crap and that was a result of the Hawks pressure through the middle, the only bloke who seemed to be able to make the right decison going forward was Ablett, it was the blokes like Corey, Kelly and Johnson who lacked their normal composure.

I can't really see any other teams stepping up next year to challenge the hawks and cats as the best teams. Carlton are probably 2 years off. Maybe the bulldogs if they get a tall forward.

Might be a rematch next year.

You shredded yourself by the first line mate, especially being a Frocker

But you are right. Our decision making going inside 50 was terrible, but even then the small forwards didn't work hard enough to get to the fall of the ball.

Hawkins will play a large part in the 09 campaign. He had a consistent run of games towards the end of the year where he kicked around 5 goals a game for the last 4 weeks.

It's a long way out to be making predictions, but this does seem the likely 2009 Grand Final match-up

We will be back bigger and better :)

WE ARE GEELOGN

sorry mate, couldn't resist a little dig

Imagine Geelong got a mini run on and kicked a couple of quickies to change the momentum and got over the line by a goal....this site would be up to the eyeballs with trolls saying Buddy Franklin is over rated (which he isn't) along with Roughhead and I'm sure a few others. And Clarkson would be seen as an idiot for playing an injured Croad in the GF.
To the victor the spoils and we have to suck it up and take the hits we deserve, but some of the comments on individual players are ludicrous. There is definitely room for significant improvement in our forward line. We need someone who WANTS to kick a bag and dominate. That's what forwards are paid for FFS!
20% improvement in consistency from Gamble/Hakins in 2009...problem solved!! Still the best midfield by a mil...defence...still the best by a mile....forward line at the moment..average at best.

Well I hope we are. I hope we bounce back ala Nth '99. But its no certainty. Look at 2006. After the 2005 loss, I for one was confident we could give it a real shake in 2006. And look what happened.

The boys really need to keep it together and use this to spur them on, not tear them apart.

My one regret is not enjoying the 2007 one enough - I was too focussed on how good were were and how we could go back to back. If we get there again, I will not make the same mistake twice....

Our forwardline has always been our weakness. Why are people only commenting on it now?

It would not suprise me if we were favourites next year - fire in the belly and its Cats for the 2009 Premiership.

Now where is that lid?

Without sounding like a troll I have got this to say. You guys are way too reliant on Cam Mooney to kick all your goals for ya.
Yeah sure you have got Ablett and Chapman but you really miss another tall forward. You had Lonergan playing in the GF alongside Mooney but I would have opted for somebody like N Ablett(who I know doesn't want to play AFL footy) or Tom Hawkins.
Actually what's up with Tom Hawkins? I heard somebody say that he could be injured.

He's missing from your team.

No offence but Hawkins isn't the answer. He is too slow, fat and uncommitted. Cam Mooney is only good for a goal and a half a game (even when he is getting delivery from the best midfield in the comp). Hawthorn has exposed your weakness, you don't have a forward line.. I'm not disputing that you are a very good side with the best defence in the comp and one of the best two midfields in the comp, just need to fix that forward line.
