Did they?

Don't you mean some sections of the media ran with that but Nicks quickly put that to bed the next day or so?

A blunt Matthew Nicks has refuted a report that Matt Crouch will not be offered a new contract for 2024 before shutting down questions about the topic.
A TV story this week stated that Nicks had told Crouch he would not receive an extension when his deal expired at the end of 2023 and that the 27-year-old midfielder was furious.

On Friday, Nicks denied that, saying he was extremely disappointed at the report.
“Let me set the record straight and I won’t answer 100 questions around this,” Nicks said.

“There was a news article on Tuesday night that was incorrect.

“I have not had a conversation with Matt Crouch about his future.

“I’ve said this the whole way through, we’ve got a squad of 44 players who are all super important to what we’re doing and Matt is super important to what we’re doing.”

Pressed further about the Crouch situation, Nicks said “next one … next question”.
Bahaha…

Like he’s gonna say anything else

What’d do you think he was gonna say in response..

“Yeah, nah.. Crouchy is gone.. no way I’m gonna allow the club to offer him a contract”..

He never said he would be offered a contract for 2024 ( and Nicks never should)

All he did was cleverly shut down the narrative.

Sorry mate, but I know they were trying to move him on.

And really, surely you’ve been around long enough to know not believe anything that comes out of clubland?

Sorry to disappoint you but I know for a fact he has not been told he won't be offered a contract after this year, not by Nicks or anyone else at the club at this point.

It may well be the case that he's not offered a contract after this season but that discussion has not been had at this point either with him or his management W Sports & Media.

It would be pretty silly to rule out signing a 28 year old again if in the last year of their contract they turn things around and become a best 22 player again.

I'd say it's more likely he gets moved on than not but that I know for a fact discussion hasn't been had either in the past or at this point and I do know from this end he's putting up his best running numbers ever this preseason so it would be prudent for list management to wait and see at this point.

Its where stats can seem better until you drill down

3 seasons equals 37 per year which is LESS than 2 per game - which is very ordinary
Ordinary for a bloke that's a below average RUCK ....and whose place in the side is predicated on his around the ground work ....the 2 contested marks a game is a fail

A great example of where Stats can lie .....what about the 400+ missed EASY marks ....the fluffed kicks ....the Gameday impersonations of "Weekend At Bernies"

I don't really get the O'Brien hate regarding his marking. He's had some pretty good contested marking games especially when needed. Wouldn't say that's an issue for him.

Below average ruck?

I would have thought at the very least he fits well in the average category

Not IMO ....he's supposed to be a "negating" ruckman ....his problem is he's too easily knocked off balance in man to man

He does have games where he grits his teeth & he's unstoppable in the air & ruck .....but too many games where he's just sticking his arms in the air, without any conviction or strength of body or mind

Yes, ROB is around average of all AFL ruckmen.

Not amongst the best, but not amongst the worst either.

Yes he has :whitecheck: .....but also way too many where he's been next to useless

The Club persevered much longer than they would with other players .....so there was a long stretch of poor games, resulting in his dropping

His 1st game back after being dropped, showed what his ceiling is .....a truly powerful performance ....however he quickly returned to type

He needs competition for his Ruck spot !

Paywalled, is that an old article from last year?

They wanted him gone last last trade period. I’m not referring to 2024, that’s a discussion that doesn’t even need to be had now.

Are you saying Bond and Dowling won't play at all this season in the AFL?
I can see both getting a run at some stage, get the guys with better disposal skills in the team.
This team needs players that can hit targets, both of these lads look very competent users of the ball.
We'll see!

I can see Bond due to how ready to go he is as a player and us having a few holes he could fit into. Dowling, not so much seeing the lad is approx 15 kg underweight. That kid seems more of a 2024-25 prospect.

Mate ....you thinking ROB is a good ruck is not a hill to die on ....the industry has opposite views to you

I never said he was good, great or anything of the like but he is not below average...he falls very much in the average category in the AFL.

You're not the industry and you don't speak for them.

I don't think there's any value keeping him regardless of how he goes. We've got Keays and Laird as experienced mids, we don't need a 3rd experienced full time mid denying the up and comers valuable time. It won't surprise that he is much sharper this year given 12 months out with groin issues. Bad groins really sap the confidence. I hope he has a great season in the 2s and gets another crack elsewhere where they after a plug and play ball magnet.

Tells you everything you need to know when despite training the house down, he’s been in the possibles team all the way through.

Then add Nicks comments about competition for midfield spots and poor bugger, no matter what he does, he knows he’s stuck in the 2s unless we get injuries or one of the experienced guys form drops massively.

Would suck to go through the whole preseason with that reality considering where he was at previously.
