Thank you ever so much for making the effort to compile this flashcrow. I think most of us here realized RT is going to be very good, but that highlight package from just one preseason trial game shows what an absolute beast he will likely turn into. I do not use the 'elite' word often, so as not to undervalue it, but he has 'elite' written all over him. Watch out Wayne Carey, someone has you covered, and hopefully without all of the off field muck that came with him!
The pleasure is all mine. There is certainly a lot to work with. I'm hoping he really develops this year and gains confidence from game to game. It would be good if they kept his centre bounce ruck to an absolute minimum.

Surprised Rioli got away with a sling tackle. Must have been holding on and swinging fairly tight if Keane got his head knocked off but Rioli still manages to drive his head into the ground.
Rioli had another half rotation of tackle to decide to either sling him or just hold on - so we'll never know about that, because SPP comes in with the shoulder.

No, spp saw Keane was already tackled and kept running in anyway, then lead with the shoulder. spp had enough time to avoid contact
There is no doubt SPP lined him up for the bump.

But the bump was made more severe with Rioli's sling tackle.

If SPP didn't bump Keane, Rioli would be looking at 3 to 4 weeks.

And yet, no free kick for either action.

Saw Thilly on Rundle st on the weekend. Seriously still looks like a kid despite putting on a few KGs, so much room to grow wouldnt expect him to hit his peak for 3 years. Also they might not be Naughton style pack crashers but all our key forwards have sublime skills gonna be a treat watching this year.

Ironic you pick Naughton as the example to compare to. So RT averaged the exact same contested marks per game (1.8) as Naughton did ( and in 21 games v 23 so sample size basically the same)
Top 15 contested mark players for the season - RT the youngest by 3 years

He was number nine in the league for contested marks as a forward last year. If you purge the too small sample sizes probably sixth or so. And there's no one really even that close to his age in the group near him on the list.

Those numbers are boosted somewhat by the Ruck stints (though he's not alone in that), but this is a kid who's like three quarters of a decade off his prime years.

You can think a lot of things about him, and he's not a dominant pack marking forward just yet, but the kid's a contested marking beast.

100%

Sitting just behind RT in the contested mark averages - Max King, Franklin, Daniher and Hawkins.

One of the problems with understanding key forward play is that most people significantly overestimate how many contested marks a good key forward takes.

Having said that, I don't want us trying to turn Thithorpe into the Kurt Tippett 'sit under the ball and try to outmark it when we bomb in' guy. He should be more Nick Reiwoldt- put someone on him big enough to stop him and they can't keep up, put someone who can keep up and he'll monster them. He's too good to abuse by just having him constantly crashed by defenders.

Or crunched in the ruck, that’s why I prefer him not there

That is exactly the sort of player Thilthorpe will become for us and a horrid matchup for the opposition

I also think some people don't understand what a contested mark is

It doesn't have to be a huge pack crashing Jonathan Brown mark over 10 defenders. Winning a 1-on-1 then taking the mark is all it takes

We're back in to the Pear supporter cycle, where pre-season hopes are at an all time high after being brainwashed by the Club and their shiny new toys.

For that reason, I would be happy with either result on Friday night.

Option 1: We win, well it would be good to watch the excuses flow freely down Port Rd.

Option 2: They win, the cycle continues on to the next phase or taking out the March Premiership, before they are severely let down once again.

Genuinely torn, but am leaning towards Option 1.

Like clockwork...must be getting close to March

If Butters and Horne Francis remain fit for most of the season, I can see Port doing pretty well. Should make the 8, and could even go top 4. They do have some pretty reasonable depth elsewhere also. I wouldn't mind a utility like Houston on a flank or wing for us.

And yet 2 a game is still league elite territory as a kpf

Buddy Franklin type as well?
