Wasn’t really impressed with any of the VFL lot 🤔
No. They were rather poor to be honest.

Happy to see Gus down back when it mattered though. Hopefully Jake is ok. Besides his ankle concern we looked to pull up ok. McVee looked very good. Koz looked very good. Hunter secured his spot for Round 1. Trac looks set for a big year. The Grundy/Gawn combo will take some time but positive signs early days. Ball movement looked pretty good for this time of year. Saints weren't much opposition, but we looked dominant enough. Pretty happy with the hit out.

Didn’t watch as closely as I will next week. But impressed thought our skills were generally pretty good for a first hit out. McVee looks the goods. Hunter will be a valuable asset. I think Gawndy will work. But it’ll be tinkered as the weeks go by. Also go to remember Grundy hasn’t played a game for quite a while.

had to switch off after the 3rd. Howd JVR look? did Jefferson Ford get a run? Scache?
Being honest, JVR looked out of his depth against senior opposition.

Jefferson got a run after the 4th along with the rest of the magoos. schache was servicable in a pretty inexperienced forward line, kicked a great snap... but mainly servicable. Hibberd, Tomlinson where noticable in defence being of a higher skill level, Jordan looked a bit more ahead to having played at AFL level, but not overly impressive. 2s where quite sloppy, JVR did get a bit more involved against lower opposition but not stand out

Ok, that's probably it for the 'A' team.

Most impressed by: Hunter, McVee, Petracca and Pickett. Grundy looked decent and imagine he'll take the bigger portion of the ruckwork, with Max shifting around the ground. Happy enough with how they looked, although St Kilda are just flat out bad, so can't fully assess.
yeah so sick of this media beat up that St Kilda are any good.
A; they haven't been any good since they last played in grand finals and B; just because Ross is back, doesn't mean he will solve all your problems.

My ITK "went to the game" take:

Saints are shit and will be in for some pain
Our starting mids looked in amazing nick despite cruising in 2nd gear for most of it
Ball movement was better but still some work to do with the final kick inside 50. Liked our use of the switch and good overlap from half back. Bowey, McVee and Rivers were all good at this.
Although Rivers bombed long a bit, I thought he looked strong, fit and got a lot of the footy. Even rolled through the midfield and kicked a great set shot.
Hunter was effective. Hit some great passes on his left, will make a great combo with lingers.
Lever rolled his ankle and wasn't happy. Ankle was taped already too and might be the one he hurt last year.
Gawn and Grundy were good without dominating. Need to see Grundy hold a few more marks if hes going to be resting forward.
Physicality was good. Both teams turned up to play and we looked the much bigger, better, well drilled outfit.
Phillipou will be a jet for the Saints.
Did I mention Saints are shit?

Can't take a ****ing thing from ball movement during the pre season. Teams aren't defending 100% so it's way too easier to transition. Can really only look at individuals to see if they've added size, strength or confidence. Game styles aren't being implemented in the pre season and/or proven

Can't say I've heard much about stkilda being anything more than okay, certainly no beat up in the media. Mind you haven't paid a lot of attention at the moment, I suspect when we get closer to the season the 'experts' will have saints around 9th 10th which is about right.

Only watched the first three quarters on tv.

Loved Bowey, Hunter and McVee.

Also liked Brayshaw mainly back and Rivers time spent in the middle.

Overall we look like a well-drilled, physically mature team

danster168's take on the games:
  • Trent Rivers was given a lot of midfield minutes and CBA's. And he excelled in the role.
  • Judd McVee. A personal highlight. Looked composed and did some good things and the senior players never hesitated to give him the ball. The pick of the rookies/yet to debut players.
  • I don't think that we got any answers about the fwd line. Gawn and Grundy didn't share a lot of time on the ground together and when they were there was just a lot of drifting around that it was hard to tell but Gawn will be the main ruckman. Gawn also played extremely well. Grundy was a little sloppy but got involved with his tackling and pressure around the ball. A class below Gawn (like most are though).
-Oliver showing to be in great nick. He actually started in the backline at one stage which was interesting.
  • Petracca played very well. Started the match at HF to allow Pickett to be at the first CBA.
  • Lachie Hunter was very involved. A couple of skill errors but for the most part was very involved and found the footy.
  • Jake Bowey, took some good marks and used it well.

Reserves game
  • Hibberd dominated and Turner was a standout.
  • Verrall competes well.
  • Jefferson touched it about twice in about 50 minutes of football. Just couldn't get involved. But the ball wasn't really coming in with much space or purpose.
  • Taj Woewodin. He is tougher than given credit for. Went back into the pack several times and took a big hit and got straight back up. He also has a burst of speed that I like and is a super neat kick. I wouldn't mind him getting AFL games this year.
  • Sestan didn't do much. He looks pretty small out there. He doesn't cover the ground super well but I'd like to see him in a midfield role to see him do more contested stuff.

Agree with McVee being the surprise packet.

Smooth mover with lots of time and a neat kick. Was involved, won 1v1s and involved in chains of play.

Saints half forwards were garbage though - Butler, Higgins, Gresham all pretty anonymous.

I hope Bowey plays every week and McVee looks like he's going to get some games if Rivers is drifting through the midfield at times and Salem is out for a while.

Lol, timekeepers at Moorabin not blowing the siren when the ball is in St Kilda's forward line
They tried to hit it before kozzies goal in the first too

Did you watch Tomlinson play?

The most noticeable part of his game was watching him getting absolutely torn apart by a 0 gamer who's just gotten on St Kilda list through the SSP. His name was Anthony Caminiti and he took about 5 contested marks on Tomlinson alone.

Tomlinson was worst on ground by the length of the Flemington and that's also including the top up VFL players.

They'll be going through a cultural revolution under Lyon.
They're two way running was below expected and they left us enormous space to work in. An easy win for us but not a true test.

i noticed ANB was lined up on the wing a fair bit yesterday, did anyone see if Hunter was on the HFF then, and were they swapping positions at times?
