I think Naughton does need to improve body positioning in contests though. He is elite when he gets a good opening on the mark, can crash packs, and solid on the ground. But I have seen him be bumped off the ball by smaller players a few times when ball on the ground, or out bodied at marking constests where both players are standing their ground. Granted he is not a tank build wise like Bruce was, and more slim lined.Don't know if that's a massive positive for Darcy or negative for Naughton...
Loving the development of Darcy, but hope Naughton doesn't start losing match ups against 2nd year players
Bont looked in incredible nick, watching him move freely is something to behold.I was there today. Takeaways
Bont will be back to 2021 form he sparkled.
Jones looks super fit
All the light duties guys Treloar, Baz, Keath etc do not look far away
Sam although still light has bulked up a bit
Busslinger is very skinny do see him playing much senior footy this season.
A good injury run we will be top 4
He did nothing outstanding. How did JUH go today?
Defence for Buku and Wing for BednendoFor those who were there, what roles were Buku and Bedendo playing? I think there’s so much upside and flexibility in those two.
Both were in the ‘B’ side forward line and both were playing pretty deep but mostly starved of opportunity given the senior midfield was on top.For those who were there, what roles were Buku and Bedendo playing? I think there’s so much upside and flexibility in those two.
VitalDread Do you know who this number 8 was? Looked very young, tall & skinny but showed enough to make me want to add him to the list today.Couple of observations from today's session:
1. Sam Darcy is ready, and I expect him to line up in the backline in round 1. Seems to read the play well and took a couple of strong intercept pack marks. That being said, he'd probably need to play as a floating tall as he doesn't have the body to be able to compete 1 on 1 with some of the premier forwards. So I think two of Jones/Bruce/Keath/Gardner will lineup alongside him. Keath really does look trimmed down and was getting through his laps nicely, will definitely be interesting to see how they decide to set up in defence against the dees.
2. Bont really does look like he's primed for his best year yet. He really does make it look effortless when he finds space in congestion and nails a 45m kick to a leading forward.
3. McLean looks like he hasn't missed a beat. A lot of talk about who's going to fill the Dunkley role as a midfielder with a defensive side to his game, and I don't see any reason (other than injuries) why that can't be Toby. He also gets a bonus point because it doesn't look like he's lost his trademark "duck", so we can probably count on him for a few cheap goals too.
4. English might end this season as an All-Australian ruckman, but it's going to be his around-the-ground work that carries him to that accolade. The most frustrating thing about him is every time there's a stoppage, his first instinct is to look at what the other ruckman is doing, which means he's always one step behind. I think he needs to get a bit of Nic Nat about him and just attack the ball and make the opposing ruckman start worrying about what he's doing. Outside of that, his game is just elite, his pack marks both in D50 and F50 are such an asset, and with the acquisition of Lobb, I think we'll get another 10-15 goals from English this year.
5. I'm not sure who it was, and I'm hoping somebody can enlighten me, but number 8 from the blue team actually played a pretty handy game for what you'd consider the "B" team. Took a couple of nice contested marks and also seems pretty fit, was moving from contest to contest pretty well.
Now for a couple of not-so-great things.
Firstly, I personally don't see it happening with Arty Jones, he kicked a couple of nice goals in the match sim but he just seems to look disinterested to me. Earlier in the session, they were doing an uncontested kicking drill and he missed the target twice in a row and then had a couple of turnovers in a "keepings off" drill.
Lastly, I don't think we'll see Busslinger in the AFL this season, obviously, he's coming back from an injury but he looks way off the pace. You could tell he was running on heavy legs when they were doing laps, and he looks a step off the pace.
My last comment will hopefully shed some further light on the Stand vs Outside 5 tactic we'll be employing this year. From the game I watched, it seems like we were opting to stand as opposed to granting them the extra 5m. I personally think it's much of a muchness and shouldn't be a determining factor in the result of a game, but I know some people have stronger views on this so thought I'd shed some light.
????LOL you really have no sense of humour
Clarke was given the number 8, any chance it was him or was he in the white side? Although he isn't tallVitalDread Do you know who this number 8 was? Looked very young, tall & skinny but showed enough to make me want to add him to the list today.
On Arty Jones, you must have been watching what I was. It was very alarming. He seemed to seriously fluff every second kick despite being uncontested and not very long.

Definitely wasn’t Clarke. He looked to have a similar profile to Busslinger (but wasn’t him).Clarke was given the number 8, any chance it was him or was he in the white side? Although he isn't tall
Did we have any FS/Academy players taking part? If so then it could have been Croft if it was a tall and skinny player.
It will be interesting to see how the VFL team structures up KPP wise to hopefully allow a similar game plan to the AFL team. Both were in the ‘B’ side forward line and both were playing pretty deep but mostly starved of opportunity given the senior midfield was on top.
Both guys were actually very dangerous deep forward and had a few scoring opportunities when given the chance. Finishing let them down. No idea what roles the club has then earmarked full time though.
Shhhhhh Croft is rubbish, rookie selection only.Croft was there.

Number 8 was definately Jordan Croft. I was sitting near Matthew at open training today and asked him if there was anyone in particular he had his eye on, he said yes, my son is number 8. I think he said he is currently 17 and playing for Calder Canons this year
