Thank you 76woodenspooners

One of BigFooty’s all-time-favourite posters, Reykjavik , was all across the board level stuff. He once posted a list of the responsibilities of a Not-For-Profit board like that of Collingwood …

abcdef.....ijklmnop

NFP board responsibilities
Specific responsibilities of a not-for-profit (NFP) board include:

  • Driving the strategic direction of the organisation
  • Working with the CEO to enable the organisation to obtain the resources, funds and personnel necessary to implement the organisation's strategic objectives
  • Implementing, maintaining and (as necessary) refining a system of good governance that is appropriate for the organisation
  • Reviewing reports and monitoring the performance of the organisation
  • Regularly reviewing the board's structure and composition, so that these are appropriate for the organisation
  • Appointing – and managing the performance of – a suitable CEO
  • Succession planning for the CEO
While the above points are also applicable to for-profit boards, NFP boards also face a unique range of issues, such as:

  • Difficulties in defining and measuring organisational effectiveness
  • Transgression of role boundaries
  • The negative impact of the structural compositions of some NFP boards, including those arising from representative models
  • Funding dependencies and constraints

In practice, the role of the board is to supervise an organisation's business in two broad areas:

  1. Overall business performance - ensuring the organisation develops and implements strategies and supporting policies to enable it to fulfill the objectives set out in the organisation's constitution. The board delegates the day to day management of the organisation but remains accountable to the shareholders for the organisation's performance. The board monitors and supports management in an on-going way.
  2. Overall compliance performance - ensuring the organisation develops and implements systems to enable it to comply with its legal and policy obligations (complying with statutes such as the Corporations Act 2001, adhering to accounting standards) and ensure the organisation's assets are protected through appropriate risk management.

And yet a board with Peggy and Brendan couldn't escape the same fate.
Yep I think the Hawks were also shut down. Both were in life support for a period, we’ve always carried ourselves and the competition. We need a president that will unashamedly coerce and pressure the AFL flogs.

Adelaide and West Coast the only other exception.

So the AFL has decided we get $2m less than other clubs this year…we need a board that will throw its weight around and agitate and demand. We deserve more…
Would Collingwood be better to exceed the salary cap where possible and pay taxes, then claim a financial loss and be eligible for financial support?

Be very careful what you wish for.

We are one of 18 clubs. Sure, we’re a strong club, but what leverage do we have? Boycotting the competition? Sitting out games? Yell at Gillon and threaten him that if he doesn’t give us our $2 million then we’ll yell at him again? As a singular club we have no leverage over the AFL. Doesn’t matter who our board is and how much weight they want to throw around.

The only reason the AFL would give any concessions to Collingwood is if it’s in the best interests of the AFL. And if the AFL do decide that it’s in the best interests of the AFL to give us that extra $2 million from the broadcast rights distribution, it’ll probably because we’ve given them some quid pro quo that you’re not happy about. Like extra games interstate. Or playing in front of minnow clubs. Or playing in dud timeslots.

it's a joke St Kilda has been in the competition for over 125 years and were receiving $20m a year from the AFL the past 4 or 5 years (pre-covid).

Isn’t that the role of equalization? Which of the candidates do you think could shift the AFL from an equalization agenda?

I would have have answered “Mick Gatto” but unfortunately he didn’t run.

Yes for sure, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a financial windfall. For example better representation in the the team of the century would have been great, we should have had someone at the table there…we should have demanded that and it should have been given to us. Or they should have just been objective rather than Carlton lovers.

push for tweaks to rules that suit us, whether it be draft rules or in game rules.

Im sure that behind the scenes there are many opportunities to influence outcomes, Eddie would have been great at that.

Apparently the AGM invites go out tomorrow morning (email with meeting link).
Looking forward to an interesting meeting.
I wonder if the gang of 4 are to be elected or are we in for some surprises?

Surprises I hope

You think the right board at Collingwood will get the AFL to revisit the team of the century?

Seriously, I think people over-estimate the power the club has to influence the AFL. Look how long it took Ed to get COLA revisited and it only happened in the end because all the Vic teams got on board.

No I was using it as an example of something that should have gone our way…

Pressure pressure and more pressure is what we are entitled to apply. And we should expect that more often than not decisions fall in our favour
