Pro's and Con's from Dogs v Bombers

Back on topic ;), Grant last night was stunning, whilst his kicking let him down, His park marking is exemplurary. You have a real talent right there.

Con's:

* Lack of pace & polish thru the midfield. (Missing Griff & Cooney doesn't help in this area) As hard as Crossy works on his game his foot skills just aren't getting better.

* Foot skills & decision making were sloppy at times - probably as expected for this time of the year.

Pro's:

* Jarrad Grant's first half - Bar the converting he looked very good.

* Improvement in 2nd, 3rd & 4th year players .ie. Higgins, Harbrow, Addison, etc.

* Performance of Easton Wood was encouraging.

I thought Josh Hill did OK last night, there was a lot of rotating players and his game time was limited.

A few of the options Tim Callan took down back concerned me

Seriously ... a 1 point margin for a NAB Cup and given the circumstances ... Football was the Winner :)

Pros: All the youngsters given a go look capable = list depth for the future.
Cons: dumb BF posts .. like "Hudson went missing" .. ummm no - did you not notice him at the end of the game in street clothes?
Playes were rotated to give the young guys a chance, others played a portion of the game while others like Higgins playedf most of the game to prove he belongs in the midfield.

Inexcusable: Wight - Been around too long to be fumbling, turning over or not providing a contest.
Kicking for goal - Set Shots & Running into Open goals - Get Acker to show them how its done, complete with post goal celebration!

I worry about our list management with Wight.. Next year the draft concessions are coming into play .. Should we have delisted him and picked up a kid in the later part of the draft? We have put to much time into him and he isn't going to get any better.
I think we should of gambled and picked up a kid or mature tall type player and see how he faired..

Why delist a player who's under contract? You a) have to pay them out & it still goes on the salary cap & b) you recruit another player who's salary is also included in the salary cap.

If you do that, then it makes it that much harder to re-sign the players coming out of contract that you want sewn up before the likes of GC17 can have a crack at them.

He is a worthless investment atm.. Better we moved him along with a loss and blood another kid that may turn into something..

As they say you win some, you lose some..

I understand your sentiment, but if it cost us the ability to re-sign say Cooney or Griffen, would you still be as keen to delist him with a year to run?

Tricky business list management.

Ok, this is frustrating me, Hudson played a more athletic game of football then ive seen him play since hes been for us. He is head and shoulders above the rest of our ruckman, and i believe we're too hard on him.
Ok anyway, pros and cos!

Pros: Grant, Higgins, Wood, Johno and Gilbee
Cons: Skipper and Wight (Dont deserve to be on Melbournes list), O'shea and Picken

Pros:

Easton Wood : good cricketer, promising footballer. Shows a lot of intent and doesn't lack for confidence. Will get a go this year for sure.

Callan Ward : looks twice as big as last year. Star in the making.

Jarrad Grant : I'm not as excited as others, but showed he has the forward instincts (like when he outmarked McPhee) that we will never get out of Big Will in a hundred years

No injuries

Cons:

Gia's kicking. At least we know he can play, unlike...

The Skipper and Gilligan (aka Cam Wight). Have the comedy value of their namesakes but please Rodney keep them away from the serious stuff.

Pro: Watching Knights trying to hold back his elation at winning a pre- season match and hearing Lloyd say they wanted to atone for last years round 22 match....ummm maybe aim to win round 1 of the real season?

Also: Hudson played a fantastic game. Honestly the difference between our midfielder being good and being awesome. With out him we'd get bustled around like school boys. It was probably his best 3qts since the middle of last year when injuries started to take a toll. That's right, he needs to be managed and I'm guessing he wouldn't have even played if the game was in Darwin such is his importance to the team.

I was thinking the same thing myself.

The Bombers fans sitting in front of me in Aisle 33 were making fools of themselves, they were celebrating like it was a final.
Next time we'll all keep deathly quiet and contain our emotions after a one point win just at the climax of the game:rolleyes:

At least we know you prefer not to cheer close wins. Fool.

Good signs from Grant yesterday though his kicking was poor. Needs to put on some weight (much like Gumbleton) and he should get better.

Someone seriously needs to work on his run up when coming in to kick for goal

Pros - Higgins - Looked a head above anyone else on the ground.

Johnson - Looked vintage
Morris - Worked hard on loyd and in defense
The fact that 8 - 10 of our best were out was a good effort

Cons:
Lake - Brain Fades again in crucial moments

Goal Kicking needs improving

Wight- Just not up to AFL standard - Doesnt have the desire to compete and assert himself on contests . ( beaten to easily without a whimper most times ) Just doesnt seem interested or want to beat his opponent

cheers

Wian

I get annoyed with comments like this. I mean in general. You don't have to be sarcastic and exaggerate like this, it's just well..i dunno..very school yard. It is possible that in this case Essendon fans could have jeered with out the ejaculation. But for the sake of a bigfooty argument you just take the extreme and go for the 'deadly quite'. Football supporters and the patriotism that goes with it makes me laugh. In a way it's a little embarrasing but that's what we love about football. /rant.

very very true

The performance of Grant meant that the long drive home after a loss was not anywhere near what they are like in the real season. There were a lot more positives than negatives with Grant the obvious. Wood was also a bonus (disposal aside) and the comments i would have made on Higgins and Ward have also already been said. Hopefully Ward can have a season at HBF and develop like Murphy and before him Brown did. (Sorry for mentioning Brown)

I would like to see Wight and Skipper perservered with at CHF during the remaining practice games. While they were both disappointing these games are for experimentation and given the investment in these players we need to have a very good look at whether they can cut it in that position. A key forward is still essential IOM. A couple of times the Dons did stretch us with three talls up forward and Eade to his credit resisted the urge to throw Wight back and kept his eyes on the main season.

I was disappointed with O'Shea. For a guy who has been in our system so long i would have thought he could have shown a bit more. Sometimes i am unsure if our player development system is as good as others. It is only one game so hopefully he gets more game time in the upcoming practice games and shows what he can do.

I think i am right in saying that all of our turnovers in the last Q came from the rookies or guys who have not played a game. Intersting to see the difference between them and those who have been coached a while. Maybe i just answered my own question about our player development.

Dylan Addison was good last night - looks to have a bit of emerging leadership about him. Love the fact that he won't take a backward step. Maybe he should have gone up forward when McPhee was having a crack at Grant...

I watched a bit of the game again today. Skipper did his job fairly well, IMO. I'm not sure what a lot of people expect of him, but he is never going to be a running, 35 touches a game player. He will always be a backup ruckman/forward and he was okay in that role last night. He also adds a bit of mongrel to the side. He looked after a couple of young blokes last night.

Also can't understand the criticism of Hudson. He was good when he played, but it was obvious that Rocket never intended for him to play more than half the game. He's important to our setup. Why would you run him into the ground in a NAB Cup game?

I loved Jamason Daniels' enthusiasm! Also, he now knows what it will take to become a senior player. The young guys had a crack, didn't they?

I saw him a number of times playing for Williamstown last year and the 40mtr shot for goal that missed by 15mtrs and the overly vigorous play that cost us a free kick and 50mtr penalty (then a super goal) happens a bit too much.
He is still just 19 however, but he really needs to make a lot of improvement this year.

As for the player development, I know Dalrymple spent a lot of time talking to him at games last year but I agree it might not be a real strength of the club.

That shot had me puzzled. A 19 year old trying to make an impression at the club has a set shot from 40 and just didn't want to take it from the instant he got it. Having only read posts on BF about him i thought he was being groomed as a backman but his reluctance to take the shot surprised me. His general abiilty and composure was what concerned me most about what he has got out of the club over the past couple of years. Same with Stack - i thought he would have shown more if our player development was A1. Still it is only one game and i hope that they are both given plenty of opportunities over the next 6 weeks to show how good they really are.
