pros
got a game into some young players
woosh not showing his cards more than a month before the season starts

cons
we lost a nab cup came boo f'n hoo
couple injuries

spot on
but also collingwoods full strength side only beat us by 10 goals shows promise for when we field a full strength side.

Spent quite a while trying to find something to say that wouldn't be perceived as a troll. I couldn't. Sorry. It didn't look good from here. Was quite a big loss for a preseason game. disappointed that we aren't going to see a preseason derby this year. Would have loved to have seen Palmer and Masten, though I suppose Palmer would have been tagged by someone a little more talented anyhow.

Keep hanging your hat on Palmer, you sure as hell don't have anything else to be proud of.

...On topic, after watching the first half again, I reckon our mids did exceptionally well getting their hands on the ball in close, without our ruckmen winning too many taps clearly. I think if we had Cox playing like we normally would the game would have been significantly different but I guess that's not what this pre-season is about.

Cons
Hurn - Was expecting a lot more from him but he struggled kicking out and disposing in general, when he got the ball he looked flat footed

I've been saying this for years now. He's flat footed, lacks urgency and coasts through a lot his game time. Needs to find that extra cog to succeed at the top level, being a youngster with a big kick and solid build will only get him so far.

I didn't get to see much of the game.

How did Ash Arro go ( I no him from Melb) just interested to see how he went

Thanks

No fan of him here. Has struggled in WAFL and was very disappointing Saturday. Albeit, not ideal set up for a young un to perform. Important year for him in WAFL to show something. Is still a kid so just needs to really apply himself.

haha the old Palmer vs Masten chestnut

Well I can't wait to see how you respond when all the Brisbane fans start bringing up how much better Rich is than Hill in 6 months time

I agree.

No need to be confrontational. That aside, I can't help noticing you didn't disagree with me.

If we're talking about 6 months then we'll probably also be saying how much better Hill is than Naitanui. In a year or two we might find that Rich is the worst of three and Hill the best, and in 5 years we might be marveling at Naitanui as the best of the three.

as for the old Palmer v Masten chestnut, I guess we didn't get to compare too much last year due to Masten's OP, so it's still quite new with both of them expected top play the majority of this year in the AFL. I'm looking forward to seeing a much more clear comparison between the two at AFL level this year.

Then don't post on here at all.

Its not that hard. :thumbsu:

Sorry. I guess my point though was that I didn't really have too many positives to speak of after watching the game, though I did have an opinion, which was shown in the point that I made. I guess I was maybe a little bit cheeky in comparing Palmer and Masten. Hmmm, I suppose my last sentence was a little cheeky too, to suggest that we shouldn't compare Palmer and Masten...ah damn I keep digging a deeper hole.;)

How cute that you are being "cheeky"

Just remember this is an Eagles board, and when posting in here to remain respectful to Eagles fans and the club, and you will be fine.

I said that the other day in another thread and there were many angry dissenters. I was a philistine for saying it.

Hurn is not exactly a veteran and i don't expect him to be dominating games for us yet but he has had nearly 40 games pumped into him and i don't remember a single one of them as being exceptional. I don't even remember him playing a single exceptional quarter in a game. Swift and Cockie showed more promise and had more impact in their first practice match on saturday than Hurn has in 3 years or whatever of being a regular player. Ditto Ebert and Masten in their first games last year. In fact even Seaby, Staker and Rosa, none of whom have gone to be anything significant, showed a hell of a lot more in their first few years than Hurn has. Not good signs.

I don't know if he is suited to half back. I think they are just forced to play him there as he is not fit enough to play anywhere else. I would rather see someone with pace and vision who can break lines and set up attacking plays in the future for us there, ala McLeod, Kennelly, Heath Shaw etc, being developed at HBF. They are far more valubale than a slow bloke with a big kick.

PRO - we gave Seaby his chance and he failed. Now's the time to develop Lynch as back-up ruckman.

I know, I know, he's not a ruckman but based on last Saturday, apparently neither is Seaby, and at least the Q will add some aggro round the packs.

I just found it funny you came on here pushing your chest out when your club is clearly the little brother in this state.

As for Masten vs Palmer, Palmer obviously had the better first season but everybody new Palmer would come out blazing while Masten was just another rookie. Hell, I even had Palmer in my dream team from round 1 last year because and everyone on the D&T board was saying how Palmer was AFL ready from year 1.

Palmer's real test will occur in 4 or 5 years, when everyone in the draft matures to the same level. I wouldn't be upset with the Palmer selection by any means but I can't see him being better than Masten or Cotchin.

Thanks for that.

I hope he dose well he is a good kid

Yeah it was interesting to watch him, i've seen him play a bit down this way and tbh i hope he makes it, but i cant see it happening....i was surprised he got drafted ahead of a few in that team...but anyway...

eagles fans, if i was in your shoes, i wouldnt give a stuff about the result...as has been said numerous times in this thread, these games are an opportunity to try all things new...including players..and you have a few handy types on your hands. You'll be thereabouts, and regardless those kids will become men, and you'll be back up there soon enough. Good luck for the season proper, and we'll see you blokes soon enough!

P.S. Nicoski looks to be in for a big year...

Thanks for that.

EVO I didn't think Ash Arrowsmith played as bad as what was previously stated.
I think he has improved ten fold from last year and has alsoput on some weight, he did some good things around packs and broke free from a few tackles, his use of the ball wasn't flash but he was under pressure most of the tim as well.
If he continue's to improve as he has in the last year he may make the main list 1 day.

Now as for Pro's and Con's
I have now watched the full game again and as I already knew the score I was focusing more on what each player was doing rather then what they could do.

Pro's that I didnt touch on B4:
* Arrowsmith has improved.
* Swift is coming along nicely, just needs a bit more endurance, got tired late.
* Nicoski was moving better then he has for a while.
* Sullivan showed he could compete with the second tier Ruckman.
* Cockie is ready to play.
* McGinnity looked good before getting wiped out.
* Glass moved better then he did all of last year
* Cox was great on a lead and looks to be moving fantastic.
* Kerr was fantastic when he was on the ground.
* Spanger's attack out of defence was great.

Con's:
Hurn- needs more fitness as he tired after the 3rd qtr.
Masten- Needs to be fitter to play the role he is.
Lynch- Not fit enough to play midfield this year and NO second efforts.
McKinley- Wasn't Applying enough pressure and wasn't working hard enough, Came across as a lazy game while playing forward.
Staker- Showed that his best position is Forward as he was kept quiet in the Midfield.
Seaby- Is below par for a starting ruckman at AFL level.
Skills- Terrible, couldn't hit targets by hand or foot and over ran the ball to often, and kicking on goal was again shocking.

The biggest CON of all is we dont get to see another game until round 1.:thumbsdown:

nice post TWL, positive and jovial which is how you should be at this stage of the pre-season when every team has 0 wins and 0 losses on the board. TWL is more positive about our chances of climbing back up the ladder than a few of our "supporters" who think we are just a carbon copy of last year, or have poor disposal, or have no forward line, or have the same old game plan, or dont go up the guts > all based on one nab cup game in february! yeah you can be critical but dont get too gloomy about our chances just yet. and all those fans who say things like "we will scrape into the eight in 2010 and be a shot at a premiership in 2011/12" way to make things boring, get on us now. no team has done anything this year yet! go you eagles :thumbsu:
