That was surprising tbh, I got there for the reserves last qtr n witnessed Morningside kick six goals to overrun a flat looking Labfrador, well done Panthers.

Surprising? Morningside Ressies has beaten Labrador Ressies 4-0 this season. (Apparently the Panthers board dont care about Ressies Premierships anyway lol)

Congrats to the Labrador Seniors for their Back to Back Premierships.

After the debacle of playing the GF at Yeronga and not on the Gold coast be it 2 gold coast sides participating,, ( and if you include the resssies and womens grand finals , make that 4 out of 5 Gold Coast clubs participating), I hear the hierachy of the QAFL have decided to disband the Colts comp and have a under 18 comp based back in the junior league ,,,,, Apparently have decided to do this without any consultation with the clubs ,,, I spoke to the Broadbeach football club president who informed me of this and he says he has spoken to a number of other club presidents whom are fuming with this ,,,
Junior league stuff is for under 8s,10s,12s,14,16,..... not under 18 ,,, thus age group should be part of the senior club program,, !!!!!
Wow,,, bring back Mick Conlan please !!!!!

Spoke to a representive of the QAFL today and they estimated the crowd at the GF to be some 2300.
With 4 Gold coast clubs participating in the seniors, ressies and womans GF ,, if the day was held at say Broadbeachs home ground, one would expect some 3500 there. ,,,

From what I hear the under 18's is under the senior banner & separate to the junior comp

18s is part of senior footy.

Just unfortunate that you're now forced into a senior footy program when still at school, even if you don't have intentions of taking your footy beyond pure recreation.

The release i got suggests there was plenty of consultation. Not sure how accurate that is. To my knowledge, players, parents and clubs preferred 19s but that's only in my immediate experience at a handful of clubs.

Reckon there was a fair bit of discontent with 19's Thommo - made some clubs have to make that call on 2's footy vs colts footy - whats more important? Its a hard one and I agree that being part of senior footy at say 16/17 can be problematic. Once again it all gets back to your coaching staff and how they manage this.

How will 18's be any different?

It's still part of a senior program, but now its taken that call out of the hands of players and parents the moment a kid turns 18.

Sadly, even when they're good enough for ressies - some kids prefer to play 19's. Now those kids may not play at all when they turn 18.

My Rant
Should be a priority for AFL/QAFL to get this right. An absolute nightmare and costing players to the code.
Makes it incredibly difficult for clubs to have long term players and get support from all age groups. Money helping player retention at all levels would be far better spent than that wasted on Women's football.

I would also like to see figures on player retention from junior codes to Senior ranks rather than insignificant details on registered women footballers. We have lost the plot all in the cause of political correctness.

Silly comments thunder IMO. The afl s job to "retain " players??? You must be kidding. How about some onus on football clubs to do this? Like create a good environment for all players, not just your top end?
Doddsy, basically the difference is that with most of an u18 s side being u17 then senior footy isn't even considered for many still. At 19s, it means that a lot more boys are turning 18 and starting to feel like a senior player in all manners. As for colts not stepping up to reserves footy. Well in the main colts footy is a better brand of footy than reserves footy below qafl level. I know from watching a fair bit of both that nearly every time a colts boy comes up he more than holds his own at 2s level and in fact is usually one of the better players. Next year my club is going into div 1 and I think we will see it differently as the reserves comp will be very good and if it is u18 footy then the boys are younger.
I think u18.5 is the good compromise.

Lots of discussion here around Reserves and Colts but not much on the QAFL season and GF.
I cannot understand why the Labrador midfield continues to be underrated so much by Queensland Footy and the AFLQ, they have not lost an important game in 2 years yet are never mentioned (Or forgotten apparentley around State selection time) when accolades are handed out.The Western Magpies & Wilston Grange midfields were flavour of the year last year and this year it is the PBC midfield.I understand these clubs are more well connected but still very strange.

Labrador have the best midfield, best defence and best forwardline.

Not sure which part is meant to get the most recognition

and good players they are Damo but explain this to me, in the last round between Labrador & PBC the Tigers midfield smashed PBC off the park(won by 10 goals plus.).In the grogan medal the only midfield vote went to Derrick 1 vote, no Lab midfielder and Derrick got the Syd Guilford nomination on that game as well.He admitted himself to have been surprised. The game is up on the dartfish to be watched if anyone doesn't believe me.This is almost as strange as the year before UQ vs Labrador in the second last game of the year at UQ where Labrador won comfortably and UQ got the Grogan votes 3, 2 & 1.Anyone got an explanation?
