QAFL 2023 Season

AFL Queensland probably within the next month will announce the venue for the QAFL Grand Final. I’d say it’s between Yeronga, Brighton Homes Arena and Coorparoo. I have a feeling they could look into Brighton Homes Arena despite the location. AFL Queensland have held a lot of games there this year. If they’re looking to use it as a potential venue for the GF, it will depend on whether or not the Lions VFL team’s finals campaign will overlap during the scheduled date. Assuming that the QAFL will start their finals straight after the last round, that would mean the Grand Final will be held on the 16th of September. The VFL Preliminary finals are on the 16th and 17th, so if the Lions are in that stage of the finals and have a home prelim, the Lions wouldn’t like having 3 games played on the same surface a day before their game. If that’s the case I would like to see it go back to Yeronga. AFLQ might even look into Burpengary. You never know what they might have planned.
AFL Queensland still hasn’t announced any of the venues for the GF. Not for the QAFL or even the QAFLW as well

IMO, I think Cooparoo is the go. Its more central, better parking spaces, surface is just as good as Yeronga . Issue is that both grounds are smaller in area to most other grounds in the comp .
A few years ago they played the grand final at the Suns ground at Carrara .. ( Surfers vs Palm Beach ) .. they kept the crowd contained to one side of the ground which created a great atmosphere under the rooflines. And of cause the facilities / ground surface ,, well its AFL standard.

Southport a good venue as well, but if its a Aspley vs Redland Grand final , is more suitable to hold in Brisbane

If it has to be in brisbane hickey park would be my vote, elevated viewing areas and decent sized ground. I think they’ve sorted something with parking previously fir big games

Coorparoo was ok way better than yeronga - please no. Never been to Brighton homes arena, middle of nowhere would definitely impact the crowd

Agree,Brighton homes arena , you wouldnt get 1000 people there.
Hickey Park, yes thats another option , just need the parking space somehow big time .

Pros: good surface, elite facilities, easily accessible via road or public transport, good little grandstand for engaged supporters and plenty of other space for the onlookers keen to watch the game. Good broadcast options also for filming/streaming and commentary, possibility for BYO (not sure they would do that though)

Cons: perceived poor location, but for GC teams it would be better than other Brisbane options and for Brisbane people its less than 30 mins on train from CBD and a pretty accessible drive.

Sunny coast people it’s a compass, cut lunch, a couple of nights accomodation a short airfare and a train ticket m. Not to mention crossing 2 time zones

It is a long way thats for sure Dom from the coast. Not much time left out of 1.45hr no matter what time of the day you go.
But Thommo is right regarding his balancing scales imo. There is major upside from a facility view point, viewing, Filming/commentary (which I think shouldn't be undersold) and areas for shmoozing of sponsors.
Reckon it goes without saying that this is the #1 preferred option but the fact it is shared with AFL/AFLW is a major hurdle so nothing can be ratified. It would be great if there was some sort of agreement made around extra trains too heading out there on the day if the anticipated crowd was going to be high.
TBF it is only another 20min from Yeronga which no one ever really complained about (unless it was 2 sunny coast teams playing :) )

Thommo,
agree with the facilities and ground surface ,, AFL standards ..
The perceived poor location is correct...and it is in todays footy climate, because Springfield is taken as being miles away .. out whoop whoop as the saying goes.
As of trains , well if Aspley or Redlands make the GF ,, how many are going to bother training it ,, like they need to train it to Roma st for starters ,,, like it will be a long day to go from their home suburb station to get to Springfield then do it all again to go home. ,,just not feasible for prospective game goers. They will stay home and watch it on live streaming.
For me, if a Gold Coast team make it, Southport is the go big time. The grand final the other year between Broadbeach and Maroochydore at Southport was a great venue catering for all the required elements ,,, had a crowd of some 2800 to 3000 ,,and I feel its a much superior facility then the Grand Final venues be it at Cooparoo and Yeronga ,,,,( Yeronga is a shocker )

Thought Coorparoo was great last year, but I think BH would be superb.

Think people undersell the desire to be there to support their team, so as long as there is good parking, its not a millions years away and its a great venue, people will come.

If it was Aspley vs Redland, the joint would be full of Aspley supporters.

Cooparoo last year was full of Aspley supporters as well ,,,

On another subject , Broadbeachs young Taine Dawson is going from strength to strength every game day ,, yet another great game on Saturday ... Surely AFL clubs would be looking at him at the moment ..

Wouldn’t be surprised with his current form for Broady. Racked up his third BOG this week against the Siders, from only 8 senior games. Whispers around the club are VFL and SANFL clubs are already chasing him.

Great to see these “COVID Kids”, who missed the majority of their U16 and U17 club and rep seasons, starting to hit their straps.
Players such as Dawson, Lake and Corbett from the GC Academy and Tome, Hude and Manly from the Lions are all starting to emerge through the QAFL system. Great to see.
