QFA Div 4&5

Hopefully moorooka and the eagles go back to Saturday’s. Both teams have a long history playing Saturday’s.
Ah my bad! Totally forgot about the Roosters! With two QAFL sides on either side of them (Sherwood and Mt Gravatt) they have done quite well staying in div 2 for as long as they did. Not sure what the mass exodus at the end of 2022 was caused by, maybe a lot of different factors. But probably one of the biggest downfalls in a club in recent years to go from div 2 down to Friday night and not only going winless but barley putting a team together in a space of a year was terrible. Let’s hope they string some wins this year and start building again back to Saturdays. As you said Akers, them and Eagles have a long history of Saturday footy. Let’s hope they both get back soon.

So was just thinking about some of these Friday night teams that could be in a div 2 Sat comp. But either due to location (strong clubs in the same area) or other reasons are stuck in Friday night. No.1 - Ferny Grove. I remember many years ago they had a div 1 u12 side around 2011 I think. I know they had a div 2 u16 side in later years. I don’t know anything about them now in juniors. However they are on the north west side of a very crowded strong Saturday area. Aspley, Kedron, Grange and Sandgate. With 2 of those teams in div 2 north.

2- More of a cluster of teams in the same area. Ipswich Eagles, Ipswich Cats, Springfield, Fernvale (Brisbane Valley Rattlers) and Collingwood park. Now Eagles only just dropped into div 4 last year and finished second. But now they face the issue of no longer being the club in the area the other Ipswich clubs better players go to to play Sat. The Cats have been below average for a few years now and Collingwood park is now the strongest of the lot being in div 3. I would assume Fernvale being such a way away from everyone that Saturday probably will never happen. Although due to such sheer numbers in Ipswich and now the lions training out there, one of those teams would surely make the trip back to Saturday. Perhaps Collingwood park? Greater Springfield has great new facilities and a growing population so maybe they could find their way up one day.

3. Pac Pines- These guys are more about being a new club and building a strong junior base. I would think it would be obvious for them to make the jump to div 2 south in the next 2-3 years. Junior base leading up to their 17s seems to be alright. Great field and new facilities and back to back premierships. Although went to watch them play coops last year and they need to get rid of those school picnic tables as coaches boxes!

But of course if these clubs aim to stay Friday nights then good for them. Also this post wasn’t meant to have a go at any clubs. Just thinking out loud.
Ferny had a Div 1 U16’s around 2011,
But also Mayne in Div1 and with a Div3 side just down the road at Enoggera

Hopefully in the near future there’s enough players around for any club that wants to play Saturday’s. And Friday nights are for 3rds and clubs that are happy playing Friday nights.

Heard a whisper that Coorparoo have been given approval for 2 Friday night teams. One in Div 3 and a second in Div 4.
I know you said it’s a rumour but if it’s true, what do they hope to achieve with that? How would that work if their div 4 team wins the GF? Two Kings teams in the same comp? I don’t think any club should have two teams in Friday night. And if they do, then they move to Saturdays. Unless of course, they will do a North Shore or Macellin and change their name and still play at the same field. But again, as you said ‘rumours’.

I believe it’s purely numbers driven. I’m told they some 70 attendees at the Friday night training.

I was at Zillmere a few years back, we had the numbers to field two sides, and wanted to use this as a launch pad back to Saturday footy the following year. We were knocked back, and told no club would have two Friday night teams. If this happens, it’s at the detriment to every club around them trying to find numbers for their own clubs. Cap the numbers, start telling extras to try another club.

With both Leigh Harding and Barry Gibson in significant roles at Coops. I would say if this is the case getting two teams. They would have some pulling power to help their cause. However with two fields, both QAFLW and 2025 provisional QAFL, a strong 3rds and a massive junior base. Is AFLQ looking for a new poster club to pour all their money into. Certainly seems like it. Out of the 20+ plus teams across div 3 and 4. Why are they able to? As Longy mentioned before, plenty of other teams have tried so they can give blokes a game and get back into Saturday. Beenleigh forfeited the last 5-6 games in div 4 last year even with opposition teams giving them at least 4-5 players. So there are arguments for both sides and only ONE club is rumoured to get an entire extra team.

I think back pocket answered this easy. Can’t have a team win a flag and then have to play each other in the same comp. Ludicrous stuff. If ya have that many numbers move them on.

North Shore is there own identity! They only played out of Fisherman’s Rd due to not having adequate lighting and facilities which has now been completed and will now play there games out of North Shore Multi Sports Complex!!

Yeah we do t have the facility and we can’t play at the time required of the competition we are applying to get into but we can get a licence and play at days and times that give us a competitive advantage.

Aflq for the win!

You just gave Coorparoo a precedent. Call the 4th team Norman Park Nomads, say that you’re developing Bottomley Park #3 oval within 4-5 years and play out of Giffen Park in the meantime. Problem solved.

Probably right but I hear it’s been an unexpected influx and nearby Morningside pulling their Friday team hasn’t assisted

Does the reason for it really matter?

Maroochydore, Zillmere and Sherwood have all had the numbers to achieve it, applied for it and been told they're not allowed.

On what basis would Coorparoo be playing by different rules?

The only reason I can think of is that in 2025 they will be fielding 4 mens teams, so if their Div 4 side is mostly made up of Colts eligible players they've potentially been allowed to create a Colts type squad 12 months early in anticipation of QAFL in 2025. One would expect that the result in 225 would be that they have to drop a friday night team in lieue of Colts - but who the hell knows, as they seem to just make decisions without any sort of consultation or merit of any kind.

Your guesses are as good as mine. But the whispers haven’t gone away.

not sure they would tell us. We asked if Coorparoo were coming in at a QAFL meeting and were told nothing to see here, then a few weeks later they were announced as joining in 2025.

Would be unbelieveable if they got a 2nd side up after we were denied a few years back, and other teams also subsequently denied also.

It would be wrong and big picture doesn't help anyone and would smack of nepotism.

Unbelievable is what happens these days.
