Well the initial issue was the fact Coorparoo got a second Friday night team. And let’s be honest, there was no need for them to have a second team. They are already a Saturday playing team.

But I can’t see AFLQ stopping them from having a second team after only one year. But the only team that benefits from having two Friday night teams is the club that has them.

However the 3 clubs that I am currently aware of wanting a second team. Their Friday night team is their ‘senior team’. I’d assume Eagles and Moorooka are wanting to eventually go back Saturdays. And at some point Pac Pines as well. This is the first step.

But you’d be wanting at least 30 blokes before Christmas or just after to prove you have the numbers for a second side.
How many guys commit to Friday nights before Xmas?

You need 44 every week.
You lose around 5 for the season in most years.
At least 5 are unavailable every week for various reasons.
Count on 4 to 5 injurys ranging from 1 to 4 weeks at any given time.
That's about 60 to start with then you need back up players.
Most Saturday clubs have 70 plus players and you will need everyone of them.

To add my perspective, I think Friday night Footy presents even more challenges when it comes to fielding two sides. The logistics of playing in 2 different locations (double the volunteers), combined with the fact that players can’t double up if we're short on numbers, make it tough. Plus, I’ve noticed that more guys are unavailable on Fridays for a variety of reasons. This year alone, we used 46 players, and in one game against Brisbane Valley (a long drive from the Gold Coast) we had to play with 17 and no bench. We're looking like we will have well over the numbers for 2 sides next season, so keen to see how the comps are structured.

Friday night should be for stand-alone teams
Saturday should be for Senior and Reserve teams.

If it was for stand alone then there would only be 2 teams in our comp.

Apologies I mean as Stand alone as in 3rd side or those with 1 side

For those who can put 2 sides into Friday night they should go to Div 2 Nth or Sth

Unless they bring back the Div 3 Saturday Comp (senior and Reserves)
Ipswich And moorooka are div 2 north clubs trying to get back there. If they get there 2 teams up and running they would only stay in Fridays for one more season you’d think.

So Friday nights can be 3rd sides or 1st sides, but not 2nd sides.

Just put the sharks back into Saturday QLD footy already!

I reckon you might be better off just going to Saturday footy than having two Friday teams if you have the numbers.
Two different locations on the same night.
Two different comps.
Players can't double up and fill in if you need.
Players unable to swap squads.
Highly unlikely to get permits for Friday games if you need.
Coops were a different set up as they had Saturday teams and a massive amount of players.
Just not convinced that this is the best move for a club wanting to get back to Saturday footy.

Should clubs get Saturday licences if they need to use the same coaches for seniors and ressies and/or if they need to double up players? Surely they don’t have the numbers or support to do Saturdays?

And if you check several player stats there were plenty of Coorparoo players that played in both teams. I.e. if they showed form in North team they ended up in the South team. It appeared to be run as a 1st and 2nd team.

I wasn't aware you could change between teams.
As for coaches I'd assume you would have a 1s and a 2s coach.
I agree that you shouldn't need permits but plenty of established clubs use that option now.
I'm not a fan of a club having two Friday teams and not much will change my mind on that but aflq have opened the door and the consequences of those actions are about to be tested.

No way should that be allowed...

Not sure we can get mad at all these clubs where their Friday night teams are their ‘seniors’ for wanting a second team.

I think we forget Coorparoo. A team which is going QAFL next year, with a very strong seniors and ressies in div 1 and an already strong Friday night team was granted a second Friday night team. Where there were players being swapped between both teams this year. I don’t see them losing that second team after just one year.

Jimboomba tried to go back to Saturdays this year and didn’t work out and lost a coach as well. I’m sure they’ll go for a second one as well.

Moorooka and Eagles are teams that have had a tough last 2-3 years and fell back to Friday nights. I know personally Eagles will want to be back in Saturdays and be the premier Ipswich team again. From what I have heard about Moorooka, they have the same aims. As I would assume AFLQ would be ensuring they go Saturday in 2026 once those two teams are granted along with Pacific Pines as well. Floodgates were open and these are the results.

think the confusion is that there were other clubs (Maroochydore, Zillmere, Sherwood) who had previously asked for 2 teams and been knocked back, so somewhat surprising Coorparoo were granted that indulgence

Having spoken with the AFL recently regarding D4 entry they were pretty flexible in their thinking around 2 Friday night teams. But they were quick to point out the fact that there needed to be a blueprint for club growth and possible expansion into Saturday footy.
They are taking a long term view on getting as many clubs as possible back into Saturday footy and want to offer the support networks around those that are willing to give it a crack (Zillmere for instance)
The AFL have also brought forward a lot of the milestones required to acquire a full licence into Friday night footy (Christmas cut offs) so they can have comp structure pencilled in by January as opposed to February/March which stretches the timelines in releasing comp structure, draws etc..

Can someone explain to me why you have to be aiming for Saturday footy the following year to have 2 Friday night teams? Why is that a requirement?
There isn’t or more so it shouldn’t be. Too many people, AFLQ included seem to think Friday night footy is kick and giggles. I can assure you. The top two teams in div 3 north and south this year would be competitive in div 2 north. Obviously they wouldn’t beat to the top 4 or so.

On that note, whilst it was a praccy match, earlier this year a div 3 team beat a div 2 team that made finals.

It is incredibly enticing for a lot of blokes now to train just once a week and play Fridays. Getting their whole weekends back and knowing they can play a decent level of footy. Not so much in the bottom half of div 4 though.

Do you mind if I ask if you’re a new club trying to get into Fridays? And/or what club that is?
