Quality Players who've left Hawthorn on own terms

Once we started struggling in the 90's it was Tony Hall, Matthew Robran, Darren Jarman, Ben Allen etc who all flew home but couldn't really begrudge any of those. Ben Allen helped us draft Mark Williams from memory by acting as a recruiter at one stage.

Is this the same Matthew Robran that sat out the 1992 season instead of playing for us?? I don't begrudge players for wanting to go home (I can very much understand it since I live interstate away from my family) but he shafted us pretty good.

Jarman was really the only one that had a successful move IMO

I'd agree with that assessment if you were just talking about Tony Hall and Ben Allan. Both had a horrid run with injuries which severely limited their careers post Hawthorn. However Robran, just like Jarman, ended up playing 100+ games and becoming dual Premiership players at Adelaide. I'd hardly call that an unsuccessful move.

we have a disturbing record of great players who are low dog traitors

Bud
Wallace
Jarman
Allan

these 4 are the main ones, Chick is not to there level as a player…then there's Gary Ablett but I'm not overly familiar as to why he actually left…f**k him as he never won a flag at farm land whilst we won 5 in his time

Bitchy.

Reow!

Crowd wasnt on his own terms. Jade Rawlings chose to leave although we stitched him up with the veale deal. Karma for that was Danny Jacobs though. Other first 22 players include Campbell brown, Clinton young.

I hope Clinton Young watched this years grand final and wept into his pillow knowing that Simpkin was playing in his spot. What a w***er!

Robran cost us a premiership in 92

I can do a long rant and boor the crap out of you you youngins but believe me that prick cost us the premiership and back to back 91 and 92.

My most hated defection ever !

I agree with this. When we recruited Robran, he was an investment for the future development of the team. It set our club back far more than the loss of Allan or Jarman. I've often wondered if his "homesickness" may have been offset had he played in the 1991 premiership team.

?? i know he was injured and thats why he left he is stiff suffering due to that injury , actually a good guy for a former bomber so not sure what you mean by karma ?? sorry just a bit confused on this

Karma against us for screwing over rawlings with the veale deal.

Not according to this interview he gave earlier in the year on the Crows website, he seemed to be pretty set on staying home. Interesting to read that his brother and him are complete opposites with where they wanted to play. Matthew wanted to stay home, Jonathon wanted to play anywhere but Adelaide.

Robran only played six more games for the Hawks before returning to his native South Australia and joining the Crows. But his transition between AFL clubs was anything but smooth …

“I had a contract dispute with Hawthorn. I’d signed for one year and at the end of that year (1991) I wanted to come home to Adelaide. Because I didn’t have a manager to read through the fine print of my contract, I didn’t realise there was a clause that said Hawthorn could hang onto me for two years if they wanted to. I was home sick and wanted to leave, but the Hawks wanted to keep me.

“I came home anyway and sat out of footy for a year. Hawthorn was still trying to get me to go back. They looked at having me commute from Adelaide to Melbourne and came up with several different options, but I was just too homesick. I missed my family and friends, so I said ‘no’. I’d started a job in the travel industry with Ansett, which was something I always wanted to do, so I wasn’t going to throw that away either.

“As a result of the dispute, I couldn’t play footy anywhere. Technically, I couldn’t even train with my local amateur club Walkerville, but I still did a little bit just to try to keep some football touch. I tried to keep fit by playing basketball and that was a bit of fun. Halfway through the year, Hawthorn accepted I wasn’t going to come back and relinquished a bit, allowing me to train with Norwood. I ended up having groin surgery 4-6 weeks after returning to Norwood, so I didn’t have much to do with footy in that year.”

At the end of 1992, Robran secured his long-awaited trade to Adelaide. In a remarkable turn of events, Robran was traded to the Crows in exchange for pick No.11 in the 1992 AFL National Draft, which Hawthorn then used to select Matthew’s younger brother Jonathon.

“It was basically a straight swap in the end. Jonno always wanted to play AFL, but didn’t want to play in Adelaide. He was the opposite (to me) and wanted to purse his career outside of SA. He was rapt when he got drafted to Hawthorn and mum and dad were used to having a son away from home having been through it all a year or two prior. Jonno played 80-odd AFL games and won a night premiership, so he should be pretty proud of what he achieved as well.”

There's a famous Collingwood player who left Hawthorn...who WAS that? I don't know if it was on his own terms, though. But he said he didn't enjoy his time at Hawthorn.

Maybe Darren Milane, he was at Hawthorn having been recruited from Dandenong and walked out on the club coz he wouldn't play in the 3rds, or 2nds....wanted to walk straight into our seniors...

If you look closely in the victory lap, you will see Young on the boundary line hugging Shiels I think it is.

I saw Clinton Young walking down Swan St on Grand Final morning.

It was strange to see him there as just another face in the crowd of football supporters filling the cafes & bars. Had to wonder what he was thinking as he could've been part of the Hawthorn team playing that day.

Was well known at the time he sooked it up big time when he didn't get in the 91 grand final team. Probably should have played but at who's expense I don't know.

Rodney Eade?

Not sure on why he left, but he could of had 6/7 premierships had he of stayed.

Easy. Eade was given to the Brisbane bears in 1988 as part of the players all clubs were required to give the start up. Eade took it like the great servant of the club he'd been and quite possibly would have retired anyway. He played 229 games for us and played in the 1976, 1978, 1983 and 1986 premierships. Naming him here is, I hope, because of your fading memory ;)

Dermies terms were to stay at Hawthorn for more than the $10K or so they offered him. I couldn't live on that and I don't know how Dermie could. It was a terrible deal we offered Dermie and almost insulting. Though saying that I'm sure he judged him sports car to drive home so I'm sure he could cry too poor.

Dermie's wage was part of what almost had us merging with Melbourne. He should have taken the reduced contract, though having said that, it's his right to turn his back on the club that overpaid him and the club was the one who did give him the inflated contract.

Kelvin Matthews.

Kelvin had decided that he wanted to leave Hawthorn and play with Geelong , however the club wouldn't clear him.
He got his own revenge whilst playing against Fitzroy at the Junction Oval.

Fitzroy led by a point as Matthews had a set shot at goal after the siren and kicked it out on the full.

He played the following week against Carlton then he was cleared to Geelong.
That would be funny if it was another club.;)

Yeah, it was Darren Milane. He wasn't established at Hawthorn, so doesn't really count...

That was heaps of money back than so it was not a too bad offer
