Beaten in the contest again today and with Melbourne playing keepings off we were a bit gassed in the third quarter which meant they were able to work through our defence.

I thought Minch drifted out of it. Dunstan also very quiet.,

Anyone who thinks Ross isn't in Saints best 22, has rocks in their head.

Dempster was great. Took some really good intercept marks all night.,

Gilbert good for the run

Riewoldt is an amazing human. He was sensational.

Newnes also very good.,

Very happy with that win but gee we were lucky to pull that out after wasting so many chances. Thought it was going to turn out like that Bombers game where we wasted many chances and got beaten, in a match we should've won.

Some good positives though.

Good to see Gilbo get through without concerns, he was very rusty but that was to be expected IMO.. Hasn't play at the top level much over the last few seasons.

It may have only been a win over lowly Melbourne but damn what a win for this young side.
The comeback win over the Dogs and now this win from a game almost lost. Great sides can pull off
these sort of things. We are not a great side yet but club is learning and earning some respect.

99 tackles in a game of footy is ridiculously good! Credit to Richo for allowing us to play a fast-paced, high pressure, high intensity game. That's the game we want to be playing when we're up in a few years time so getting the groundwork in now and it's working beautifully.

Bad news is that it leads to fatigue, and that definitely showed. We played well in patches and then the Dees were able to wrestle momentum back. We'll get a few more games under the belt of our young guns, and we're set to have a really good shot at a flag in the near future.

Was anyone else heartened by Bomber's praise of our young team? Said it reminded him of a young Geelong team and really commended the way Richo has our blokes working together and pressuring. I really rate Bomber's footy knowledge so it's good to hear from an expert that we're on the right track.

Unbelievable win. Guess we're not getting that first pick.

We were on top for a good 60-70% of that match. It should not have been that close.

Gilbert had a good return. Newnes was good. Riewoldt is immense. Ross was good. Lonie never ever ever stops. Love his enthusiasm when he's about 70kgs soaking wet.

Bye week should help with us being battered and bruised.

Saints finally win a close match. This group have self-belief.

This was a pretty intensely fought out match - the Saints laid 99 tackles and there was plenty of unrewarded efforts

Two outstanding performances by the veterans Riewoldt and Montagna and a very tired looking playing group go to the break with a tough fought out win under their belt

@paddymccartin

Movement again.

:hearts:

Its a weird one. We didn't dominate, but if not for Joey I would've felt pretty robbed.
Apart from Riewoldt, no real individual standouts, but another character building win shouldn't be underestimated. That was important.

Great win.. But feel a bit how I said I'd feel before the game if we won in a close one and the older blokes were the best players, roo and joey got us over the line.. Not enough young blokes to prove the future is bright but great win none the less..

Shenton please go

Think we saw enough from Lonie, Newnes and Ross to be happy with youth. But yes, Shenton is a cut below the rest.

what a win. the character of this group is extremely good. just dont seem to give up

there are some very concerning things though in some players that i believe are extremely talented, i love each one, so i'm not trying to pot them:
- Acres decision making and disposal is worrying. just cant pick out the option and disposes of the ball very poorly at times
- Minchington defensive pressure is a worry. if he can just tidy that up he could be a very good player. because the defencive pressure is down it means he's going napping for too long
- Bruces disposal is a worry if we plan to use him high up the ground
- Newnes said it before will say it again, i fear he could end up in no mans land. he's not an inside mid, he's not an outside mid, he's not a defender and he's not a forward. he found his place in the side off the half back line, got moved onto the wing, it didnt work out so they moved him back on the back flank and now he's playing forward in a defensive role. my worry is as the team gets fitter and more established he could be one that loses his spot
- we've been papering over the cracks in the backline with fisher and dempster. delaney is a good stop gap measure but we desperately need better options. goddard no doubt will help but we need another 2 options IMO. we have to move on the "not quite KPD" players that cannot adapt to another role over the next couple of years

positives:
- massive confidence boost game to membrey. really presented well and worked with roo/bruce
- thought the fwd line structure of roo, bruce, membrey, minchington, lonie worked really really well
- longer what a first half and game over-all. confidence is growing, you can see he's found his feet
- ross what a game. i think he might go past dunstan
- lonie...lonie..lonie. worth the price of admission alone or in my case bum on the couch with a AFL live subscription

negatives:
- shenton : theres 0% chance he is on the list in 24 months. getting a game because of his dedication and effort as a guide to the younger group. decision making and disposal will cost him his career
- gilbert : rusty. will get better
- ray : looks a pace off at the moment. will get better
- backline needs work more so than our midfield and fwd line IMO
