Just want to say how happy I am with Jimmy Webster's jobs on Cyril Rioli and in particular Jeff Garlett (who he kept to just 3 possies!) in the past two weeks. We've been crying out for someone who was able to handle those extremely quick, agile and freakish types for a pretty long time now and I was really disappointed that we didn't give Jimmy a crack at Eddie Betts when he was pantsing Dempster a few weeks ago, but am really glad we're giving him a crack at them now and that he's done so well so far and also continued to get the pill himself and use it really well. :thumbsu:

We also lost with Petracca, who was more ready than Brayshaw, Salem (pick 8), who's been terrific this season, Frost, who has enormous upside, Kent - best 22, vandenBerg, who has been huge, and I still hope Trengove can overcome his foot. We have other young players I rate, but you wouldn't have heard of them. There's plenty of quality youth not playing at the moment who'll be best 22 when available. And we played a first gamer and a 2 gamer.

Alas, I'll defer to an expert on our list.

Btw, Vince has been terrific.

See you at the G in a few weeks.

why do you think petracca was more ready than brayshaw. brayshaw had the better tank of the two and was more ready to run out games of football. petracca was atleast 12 months off IMO

Yeah i had a guy at work rattling off all of your outs.
Whole heap of 1st and 2nd year players lol.
Can't be bothered listing all the promising Saints players who weren't playing.

The Dees sacked all their on field leadership when they were tanking. I believe they are still paying the price.

I reckon it was the drafting that killed them on top of that. 2008 they get Watts, Blease, Strauss, Bennell, Bail and Jetta. That year Freo get Hill, Ballentine, Zac Clarke and Walters. They didn't even get a priority pick. They got De Boer and Clancee Pearce with rookie picks. The Dees got Jurrah in the preseason draft.

Its a pretty chilling comparison for Dees supporters.

It's gotta be poor development though. Surely a club cannot just consistently pick every lemon in each & every draft for 8-10 years straight...

I don't know we got Lynch in that draft who is the only guy we picked who is still at AFL level besides Stanley. Cahill, Al Smith, Heyne all gone. Collingwood picked up Beams and Sidebottom 2 years before playing in a premiership. I think it's just random. We have had a couple of great drafts but dudded for a few years before that. If we had kept Lynch and Cripps it might not be as bad a period but i think it's just the luck of the draw sometimes.

Luck with injuries helps too. How good would Geelongs 2009 draft have been if their blokes weren't so injury prone... Menzel, Duncan, Christensen, Vardy, Cowan, Laidler, (& Podsiadly as a rookie to some extent)

They definitely pluck some great picks late. 2009 was a stinker of a draft but Geelong got a heap of talent in.They were unlucky with injury the year before with Mitch Brown too, they could have had an incredible couple of drafts otherwise.

The best player from the '09 draft was Fyfe at 20, Freo got Morabito who looked a gun but seems to be unable to play due to injury also. Martin and Gunston are the only other guys I would consider close to A grade from that draft. I was a very ordinary year. I hope this draft isn't as bad.
