r15 rivalry - Collingwood v Carlton & Geelong v Hawthorn

So... how many of you Geelong and Hawthorn posters who have been bitching about the Carlton vs Collingwood rivalry are actually sneakily watching it tonight.

I did and I must say what a fantastic exhibition of football excellence on display, it'll clearly go down in the books as one of the best Carlton v Collingwood clash of them all. The skill, the crowd and of course the result...one for the memory bank

Are people going to be angry when Hawks are on top two games clear grab their second minor premiership in a row tomorrow night?

Why would anyone be angry about a minor premiership? It means absolutely nothing.

Wait till if/when we win a flag till you start posting rubbish like that.

Apart from the first 20 minutes that was a ****ing embarrassment and I wish to apologies for the shit sandwich (light on bread, heavy on shit) my team of pussies handed out tonight.

78,224 to see 8th vs 9th on a freezing Friday night. How much would geelong v hawthorn get if they were 8th and 9th on ladder???

I'm thinking they would struggle to get 50,000

I might if ESPN are showing it... after all, I am in the UK and I only have limited games to watch each weekend since the AFL and Foxtel cracked down and closed all the live streaming sites...

They are. Do yourself a favour and watch it tomorrow. See a real contest. In HD too.

Watched the first half of carl coll on ESPN this morning, left to go to the pub before half time.

I listened to 3/4 time when I had had enough... that shit was woeful and an insult to the guys who have given their all in the past contests between the two team.

Well obviously the crowd figure is the defining aspect of a rivalry.

Geelong and Hawthorn combined don't represent the same number of fans - but that doesn't mean the emotions that it conjures are any less.

Yet another insightful post

WTF does that have to do with rivalry? Essendon and Collingwood have a history of drawing massive crowds but that doesn't take away from the fact that there is sweet F-ALL rivalry between the clubs...

But just on crowds, Hawthorn V Geelong has been one of the more constant fixtures since 2008 - all crowds, regardless of position have drawn in the 60k-80k region. The fixture goes okay...

Any Cats supporters watching Round 1 on Fox?

Really looking forward to tonight.

Who cares who has the better rivalry or which supposedly means more, they're both great rivalries and have a bit of extra spice in them compared to most other games.

When both teams of each rivalry are up near the top of the ladder then they're great to watch as usually it means it's going to be a great game and you can see how the games means a little more than other games. Neutrals really enjoy it too, however when both teams are down the bottom, it's only those supporters of those teams that really wanna beat the other but neutrals don't really care. I get into the blues v pies when they're up and about just like most do with hawks geelong, but in 2005 when blues and pies were no good I couldn't care less about the game as when hawthorn geelong go down the ladder, only those supporters will show a real interest.

Another yawn fest in the Collingwood Carlton rivalry done and dusted.

There was soooooooooooo much hatred on the ground last night gee they hate each other aye guys ???

I've always been very interested in the 'big 4' rivalry but I must admit, the Geelong vs Hawthorn rivalry is amazing. Another epic game with a massive crowd. To put it in perspective, I didn't even bother watching Carlton vs Collingwood, but couldn't wait for last night's game.
Carlton vs Collingwood isn't the rivalry it used to be for a neutral. Pretty one sided games lately with just about zero passion or hatred towards the so-called 'enemy'.

Anyways hope to see Geelong finally get their revenge on Grand final day this year for 2008 :thumbsu:

The crowd was so flat after the corey incident. It was really wierd.

There may be rivalry but im not sure about hatred.

It took such a long time for corey to be taken off I think many people feared the worse, but it appears he was relatively OK, like the game was suddenly in perspective

Growing up, the allegedly biggest rivalry was Collingwood-Melbourne, but then Melbourne were shit and remained shit for too long and the passion simply left. Collingwood-Carlton matches seem to be heading the same way, the sides haven't been up and about at the same time really for 30 years. And with Carlton seemingly in a hole in which their is no light at the end of the tunnel, then the football world has ceased to care much. In this thread it really seems that is the Carlton supporters who are pushing the case for that rivalry and use as their argument the size of Collingwood's fan base (Geelong incidentally has averaged a bigger crowd against Collingwood than Carlton has over the last 10 matches). Collingwood supporters have a bigger focus whilst Carlton supporters try and salvage some interest from their torpid season.

FWIW, I can only express how I feel about matches and ever since the Bruns incident it's always been Hawthorn, and their smug supporters (including all my in-laws) that have never let us off the leash. Geelong may have won 11 in a row, but the ledger is far from squared and that drives the supporters on.

...and to think before Jeff Kennett ignited the football gods we were in the territory of possibly reversing the negative win-loss record between the two clubs which has held sway since 1925. We're miles away from getting as close as we did GF 2008...
