Just didn't love thai food in Thailand in general

Honestly I've travelled a lot and ind it a wanky conversation from people to say the food is better over seas. Don't get me wrong it is in certain situations but lots of people like to pull the bullshit 'I can't eat countries food X since I was in country X months years back'
There is a bit of wank to be sure about that stuff. People don’t seem to realise what an abundance of fantastic produce we have here, which is 3/4 of the deal in preparing great food.

I’ve never been to Asia full stop actually. Really must do it sooner rather than later. I’ve lived overseas but only Europe and US.

Beef produce in Europe is shit

Just going to talk to the ether about COVID for a sec.

Tomorrow is day 10 post-positive test. Days 1-4 were a blur, ended up in hospital day 2 because I was coughing up blood. Worked from home day 6 - was the first day I felt up to it.

Day 8 was freedom from lockdown day. Went and did a bunch of things, but hit the wall about 3pm.

Today though, I’m cooked. Seriously exhausted and spent most of the day on the couch resting or napping. The brain fog is real - I go to move and can’t remember why I’m moving. Basic problem patterns are difficult, holding a conversation is like reaching through my mind to try and grasp sentences.

I really didn’t expect this part of it, and it’s really difficult.

Yeah I've had some friends move to the States for work and the quality of fresh food is pretty meh at most places.

Also firmly second the cringe at the 'I ate overseas so can't eat ever again' crowd. My manager at work is like that about Japanese. Granted, Canberra is pretty light-on for Japanese (aside from one or two real pricey joints). But I've eaten plenty of great Japanese in Sydney/Melbourne (and Canberra) as well as Tokyo. IMO I think a lot of that comes down to the general experience when travelling. Things seem more exciting, more 'authentic' somehow which makes it more memorable, though realistically the quality is probably the same.

Yeah I'm very much in the "food is better in the countries where that food is from rather than in Australia". Just my experience from places I've been to.

Japan's food culture is mental. More michelin starred restaurants than anywhere in the world, whatever that is. Anyway you can literally buy the best soup ramen soba sushi etc. on the planet and it will be in a 2 by 2 metre hole in a train station for like $15. I followed some dudes around on a food eating trip and it was unbelievable, i don't even like food except fake meat burgers and chocolate but the shit I had over a week in japan was mind-blowing. I mean we did a couple of fancy restaurants and they were incredible but those little hole in the wall places were just bullshit too. i dunno how they make things taste like that.

India's the other place I know well, north mostly but I also know the south a little. That food tastes nothing like it does here.
I always assumed it's because of the spices maybe, plants that are native to the subcontinent, where do those spices come from in Australia? We gotta ship them from overseas, so they're not fresh, or we grow them here but it's a different climate. I dunno much about plants really.

But I eat a lot of fn curries, there's a few "good" places I've been too but they're all tame as ****. People ask me if I want spicy and I say "i want to ****ing die, kill me with fire" and i'm not even sweating? What the **** is that. I dunno how I could possibly be more blunt about it than begging for death. campaigners don't know what chilli is here.

You tell some of my family in India "mild is great thanks" and your tounge will fall off. That's how it's supposed to be.

Man I'd love to have a nice Tempura like the ones I had in Tokyo, ****ed if I can find anything even close in Australia.

Most Japanese places I look at have **** all for Vegetarians too, makes it a bit difficult for me :(

I dunno how many of you been to india but that place is ****ed the sun doesn't even look the same colour because there' so much pollution in the air.

Maybe that's the secret.

The microplastics really add an umami flavour you can't get anywhere else

I got the covid a whiles back. Still dealing with the brain fog. I'm usually an extremely witty, sharp, happening kind of guy. But after the COVID, I'm just...ah...

Terrible movie. I mean that thing really sucked. I know it was based on a book, but I think they skipped a few chapters.
100%

Went in a direction I didn't expect, especially considering the trailers

The whole gay Cowboy shit is fine, but this way crap. Like super boring crap and the ending is like wtf?

I loved it. Phenomenal acting, but I love a slow burn.
I guess there is always a minority (no pun intended)

Wtf is with the ending?

Did he kill himself? Or did he die of anthrax?

He was murdered. The kid killed him with the anthrax for how he was treating his mum.

God yes. Never shop at supermarkets in US. Aisles stacked with different bread but all taste of sugar and chemicals. Spray-on cheese etc

Ok that kind of explains a few things

Still such a disappointing movie imo

Indian is another cuisine I cook for myself. Most of the Indian restaurants other than a very few are along the lines of UK curry places with a pretty limited range of dishes that became popular there, have been altered somewhat, and were originally brought there by Bangladeshi people for some reason. So it’s possible to make great Indian food here but you need to chase down ingredients from Indian grocers a fair bit. You don’t find too much dried kokum etc knocking about your IGA

It's definitely not for everyone. Not surprised at all it lost best picture to CODA, which is a much lighter more accessible movie.

That's not why it lost
Oscars are usually won by whoever campaigns the hardest but they also often pick the safest bet. CODA is in the same basket as Green Book, Spotlight, The King's Speech etc. All perfectly fine movies but in a few years at least half the other nominees will be remembered more fondly and have had more cultural significance.

I had to look up CODA. Never heard of it before

But to be fair I'm not a huge movie, TV person really

I reckon I go to the cinemas maybe once a year

If you want a super safe feel-good movie that will make the missus happy I highly recommend it.
