Carlton and Essendon have won more premierships than Collingwood. Hardly newcomers. Essendon won 2 before Collingwood won their first.

The only reason Collingwood held the premiership record for 60 years was because most of their 14 flags were won in the first half of the 20th century.

If you reversed the 109 VFL-AFL seasons, Collingwood would still have won 14 flags and had 25 runners-up, but because 2005 was the "first" season they would never hold the premiership record. Yet their history would still have been the same.

Is a marathon runner who leads into the stadium but is overrun still declared the winner because he led for 99% of the race? No, he's not.
