Just a few comments, great thread by the way

The mpnfl although not competitive last year due to sending weaker squad to the champs. for whatever reason in the two years before that were the bench mark, winning the comp and runner up the other year. They are the equal of any country or city comp IMO. To compare them equal with D VAFA is a no brainer.

Actually think you overate the VAFA grades a lot. Below A grade i never saw much to impress me.

I have seen a few AFLQ games also and have not been impressed so they need to go down a notch at least i reckon.

Also further down Ellinbank is average, well below Alberton its neighbour.

my 2 bobs worth

VFL played SA in 2002 and pumped them.
The Vic's will play WA this year. The WA team will nearly be full of Vic boys this year a hell of alot of x VFL boys have gone over there for the sun, surf & $$$.

I would just like to add my honest opinion about the football and players in the Northern Territory.

First of all the standard of competition in the NT has dropped dramatically over a number of years now. However there are a number of reasons that have contributed to this factor.

Players drafted to AFL
A large No play in other leagues around the country (SANFL/WAFL/Vic Country)
Also i believe that the new AFLNT bored members have a lot to answer for as they are slowly losing long time supporters of the game. They need to listen to the supporters as without them there is no competition.

Dreamkiller if you think im being unfair then thats your opinion, however i was sitting with Matty Whelan the other week at footy and he couldnt believe the poor standard of competition, if your fit and have half a football brain then you can play A-grade.

As for NT players in the AFL, yes the NT doesnt have a large amount of players but for our population we have the highest ratio of players on AFL lists, well i remember reading this somewhere anyway.

I think that there are at least 5-10 kids that have the potential to be drafted every year that dont even get mentioned because Talent Scouts dont spend enough time up here. The fly in 1 week and out the next.

The AFLNT has the potential to be a great competition but to do that they need to look at getting SANFL/WAFL and other players back every season. They need to give them an incentive to play in the local comp and maybe that has to be organised with the AFL and AFL clubs as the only reason players leave is to play in a comp where they will be recognised.

One last thing i wanna add is watch out for Richard Tambling next year and for the people in SA, watch for Ryan Ayres who could be a great addition to Westies if he can get over his long run with injuries.

Yes agree with all the above.

I get the feeling ntfl's being dumbed down for an adelaide takeover.

I counted the people in the stands last week
don't reckon there was 150 there.

Appreciate this Rednecknow, you're probably right on the VAFA, but re MPNFL, you certainly couldn't equate them with the O&M, right?

Anyways, I'm still tweaking.

True, but they're all Tier 2.

Put it this way, you think VFL is by far the best of the three? Fair enough. How would they match up to AFL?
You think WAFL is by far the worst of the three? Fair enough. How would the DVFL, Eastern FL or VAFA A Grade match up to the WAFL?

I play for Flagstaff,2 years back we played against a Div 2 SAAFL club and were very competitive, clubs like Happy Valley and Brighton would pump most Div 1 SAAFL clubs. The GSFL (SA) is way too low. Some A grade teams actually play and do quite well against S.A.N.F.L. opposition.

I pretty much agree with all you've said........my post was made over 12 months ago and the standard has dropped off in the last few years.....especially after Christmas when a lot of good players go south chasing better opportunities to be picked up and the mighty dollar.

Unfortunately I can't see players coming up as much as they have in the past as our clubs can't afford to pay them like other leagues do down south.

Will be interesting to see if Wacko Jacko has any impact on the way the league is run but I think he's only on board to get a team in the SANFL ASAP no matter what damage it does to the local leagues themselves.

EDFL is better then Bendigo FL,but not quite the same standard as BFL[since mid '90s anyway].

comments on updated list

Southern FL (Vic) Division 1 is an equivalent standard to VAFA C grade and should be placed higher than VAFA D1.

Also MPNFL is stronger than ESSENDON DISTRICT FL.

Western region FL is probably ranked too high as well.

Wrt the Northern Territory FL, yes the standard seems to have gone downhill somewhat wrt many years ago, but so has that of all the other leagues as well.
Many years ago we would get a lot of expat Territorians back for the season (run during southern summer), plus a number of other top line players. Players such as Robbie Muir, Michael Graham and more.
Nowadays, no AFL listed player would be allowed to train up here, let alone play a game.
Also if a player wants to give the AFL a shot, then he will probably have a better chance of being noticed if he plays in the SANFL and the like, rather than the AFLNT because of exposure to recruiters. So if a choice needs to be made, it is a no brainer.
The AFL has taken the game to another level Nationally, but it has impacted ALL the other leagues negatively. Be it wrt players, crowds or sponsors.

Understudy, we may have a small population base up here, but the last time a National State of Origin comp was held (1988 Adelaide Bicentennial State of Origin Carnival), it was divided into two divisions.
DIV 1. Vic, SA, WA and NSW.
DIV 2. QLD, TAS, NT and more.

The NT won DIV 2. It was held at Footy Park in Adelaide. 1988. I was actually lucky enough to be in Adelaide at the time and got to see the final.
If the same concept was to be held this year, the results would be much the same.

EDIT: here is a link

Falcon, I'd also like to see the Great Southern Football League of WA get a mention. Pretty strong in country football, that one. We found them hard to beat in years gone by. Had many future WAFL/VFL/AFL players come from that region.

Also, a clarification; the AFL-NT is the administration, the governing body, of NT football, not the comp's name. It runs/owns the comp. The competition is still referred to as the NTFL.
