I thought Jack Redden really stood out last night, in a more attacking role.
Rockliff had a more run with role, but bewick really stood out and hanley is getting better each week.
I also thought mayes was a little quiet, been so for the last few weeks. Not making any mistakes though, any idea how many possessions he had>?

Two guys that played in the ressies last week were prob best on ground (Martin, Bewick).

A few first 22 injured too. Suddenly our depth doesn't seem so bad.

I was some distance away from it on the wing, but I thought Gardiner was the instigator, hence my concern. Glad that wasn't the case then.

The top notch irritating players know how to get under someones skin, and draw a free from it. They replayed it several times and gardiner didnt do Anything physical. He had his arms out when he was wrestled to ground, the rest of the time he was trying to get back up but Grant had hold of his jumper holding him down. There was nothing Gardiner did that would warrant a free kick.

This is the second time he has made his opponent snap during a game seemingly over nothing but what he says. He is a master at it.

Mayes is being played out of position, spending large amounts of time in the backline for developmental purposes. Golby's spent a lot of time forward last night in the position Sam would have been in if the game was for a finals spot etc.

Definately looking better though of the guys who played ressies yesterday only Cutler would of been in the form required to play seniors.

Agree with the Mayes comments. Been a bit quiet the last few games. Whether the ball hasn't been near him or what not. Miss his attacking spark.

Sat at ground level right on the fence for the first time I can remember. Fantastic.
Gives a totally different perspective on proceedings. Apart from that, you can shout encouragement at the boys and feel that they can actually hear you:)
Speaking of which, kudos to the supporters and in particular the boys and girls of the cheersquad. Apart from winning the game, reckon we won the barracking by a big margin.

I would like to see goal umpires given no option when they're not sure whether its been touched or not. With the results video evidence seems to provide I'd like it to either be touched check for goal or goal check for touched every time for consistency. I'm certain sometimes goal umpires genuinely don't know but need to make a call either way.

He wasn't being booed, the Dogs faithful just call his name with particular emphasis on COON-ey when he got the ball, same as when the Roys faithful would call out ROOS' name or when Carlton fans would go WOOF when Ang Christou kicked the ball.
Cheers mate, I was wondering hey why it would be boos, he's a gun for them

No doubt I'll make my own determination when I re-watch the game, but at the game, I thought we were a bit hard done by with the ump calling play on from a few of our short kicks or not calling play on when the Bulldogs kicked short, which resulted in the Dogs directly scoring two goals as a result.

I wasn't overly impressed with Golby again last night.
He has a stubbornness to hang on to the ball or inability to think through a tackle. When he gets caught, he thinks too much about holding opponents off and not enough about getting rid of the ball. Got pinged last night again, because he was using his free arm to try to hold off a second tackler.
His disposal efficiency was better, and he works hard, I just worry about his decision making in general. Not the quickest thinker, his options often dry up a bit while he's working it out.
Maybe marking him harshly, and maybe just my impression, but of everyone out there, he scares me the most when he has it.

Great to see things start to click for the team though. A bit of confidence and skills get a bit tidier and brings more confidence and they start to take more risks, moving the ball better.
Not necessarily best on ground, but most impressive in terms of expectation v. output were Martin, Bewick and Harzy. Really makes a difference when bit players step up for a leading role.
Sounds like GWS had a good game last night, hope they've used up all their good play for the year.

There was some of that, but the ones that really stood out to me were the frees against for high contact. There were a couple where they either ran into us or fell into us and we penalised, and I think one where it was a clear deliberate duck. We missed out on a couple of in the backs too, but I guess consistency is a big ask these days.

He didn't have that problem when he was easily our in our best 22 the last few years. He did a few decent things but also a few dumb things like last year when he sprinted into the 50 he would of gone for goal every time without a doubt, last night he was in 2 minds and he kicked back into the center to almost a 2 on 1. He just needs to take the game on and get his confidence back, the decision making will come with this.

Apart from that the effort and intensity for a team that has so many young players in it was good mostly. Zorko still easily my favourite player, he is the pure impact player we have needed for so long (Alongside Green and Taylor), the way he can change direction on a dime but also accelerate out of traffic so easily and not get caught. We certainly have something special here!

A few thoughts from an attendee.

* Felt like towards the end of the second quarter we blew a few chances being unnecessarily showy - probably because our confidence was high. Merrett's shot from the boundary and Hanley's mexican stand off which ended up holding the ball.

* Hanley, though, was good overall, and laid some terrific tackles last night. He is pretty tough.

* I've always known Bewick had skill, but tonight's performance was a huge step up. He won some important contests and importantly he delivered inside fifty effectively.

* Lots of lions supporters (proportionally) making plenty of noise.

Yeah this. I find it hard to know weather or not its just my bias while watching, but it seems we always get play on for coming "off our line" in the back line very quickly. Remember it happened to Redden straight after he ran back to take his kick, before he had even turned around!

Its also something that teams like collingwood really get away with, just like creeping over the mark by arcing around on a 45 degree angle. Hard to know if it is the umpires giving them leeway, or if they are just much better trained at the rules then us.

I might go against the general consensus and say that I think the touched call on Brownie's goal was the right decision - and it shows what a difference the goal post cameras make in that situation. The ball was in line with the goal posts, i.e. not over 100% of the line, when it was touched.

The "not 15" calls always tend to be a bit arbitrary as to what gets called and what doesn't. Never seems to be anything systematic in it, just annoying.

The problem with the Bewick 15m isn't that they called play on, but that they pinged him for holding the ball. Usually when it is a 50/50 call on the 15 metres and the player gets tackled the umps go for a ball up.

he dropped/incorrect disposaled it though, they get the benefit of the doubt when they told onto it.

Since when do they pay incorrect disposal?

It annoyed me as well when Papa got run down and pinged HTB. The ball spilt free and would have been play on if the chase didn't excite the umpire.

Apparently only when there is a 20m kick they think is 10m and in front of the bulldogs goal.

But it's fine when Libreatore drops it stone cold when Hanley tackles him leading in a cooney goal.

Not 15 tended to be my consistent with my theory that they call it play on a lot in the backing but you can kick it 8 metres going into forward 50 and pretty much gets paid a mark every time. Seems to be consistently how it goes team to team game to game. Annoys me a bit.

Overall we were good in patches poor in others. Plenty of positives there especially in the second quarter. Two negatives that stood out for me. First was some of our tackling early on. They were able to get the ball out of tackles fairly consistently. To be fair we cleaned this up. Second was touched on by skoob and golby was the main culprit but not on his own. The number of times we were tackled by one player and then chose to fend off the second rather than use that arm to get off and handball was flabbergasting. Not sure what the thinking was there. Sure a fend off when one player is tackling you is a valid option but when you're already being tackled and a second player comes in? Wtf

Still overall plenty of positives from the effort. In a seasons time hopefully we'll have the legs and most importantly confidence to push on after getting a lead like that

There were a few times in the last it felt like we ran some one down with a great tackle but they got away with just dropping the ball and it ran forward to their advantage. Im really starting to hate how HTB and incorrect disposal is adjudicated

Absolutely bereft of confidence. Even with open space and the goals in front of him he held the ball for as long as he could looking for an option rather than kick at goal. Eventually chose to square it up which almost got spoiled but luckily turned into a goal. Even then he had Browny in front to the left which would probably have been a safer option. Agreed he seems to be screaming internally when under pressure too. I think the longer he stays in the team and the more we can increase synergy the likelier it is he returns to form.
