Review RD 12 Review - Bailey ‘GOAT’ Banfield Leads Freo to the Win

JL said very early on when he was signed up that he was all about giving the players freedom to play to their individual strengths. For example Rory Lobb always fancied himself a forward instead of ruck and was given a shot at growing in that area. My impression is that Ross Lyon's tactics were more about disciplining the player into the role he wanted them to play and cut them if they couldn't deliver. This is why communism doesn't work.

You love to see it

Daniel Rich getting a vote is laughable. I hope it was from our coach for allowing Fredericks to burn him on the counter. If it's from their coach, probably tells us a lot about their priorities.

Surely Lobb or Aish were better?

Xavier Ellis* is a well regarded journalist and puts up his team of the round each Monday morning, this week Alex Pearce, Andy Brayshaw, Freddy and Bailey Banfield are all included giving his mustings a touch of credibility normality lacking. *Some licence was used to refer to Xavier as a journalist and definitely as one who is well regarded.

A bit of a laugh to see our own Bailey up there in the forward pocket but it's hard to argue he hasn't gotten there without some doubters and will be odds on to be in Freo's starting side next game.

And it's a shame, we are all guilty of it here & there (myself included) - but what we're learning...very quickly...is that our team structure/dynamic/unit is greater than the individual...Acres, Colyer, Aish, Lobb...Banfield. These are not names that jump off the page and scream Premiership material, yet here we are....in the conversation, 100%. They are all buying in, pulling their weight...fighting the cause, playing amazingly well. It's just a question of how far this team can go, THIS season.

It's weird, at the start of the year I was hopeful, more than expectant we could make finals. Even sneak in at the lower end of the 8. Win an elimination final and then if got beat in a semi final, well....what leaps and bounds we would have took. Yet it's surpassed that, we're well and truly a contender. J-Lo is becoming the master of surreptitiously messaging his players through his pressers...now he says "start believing". It's getting a bit serious now, and I understand that Freo fans since 1994 have been emotionally battle-scarred and weary; have had disbelief for so long they wear it like a favourite coat, but it's time to let it all go because we're coming now...and we're coming hard.

This could be it, but I guess we'll see.....

Its time

It seems to me that Caleb Serong is getting lost with all the love going around for Brayshaw and Brodie.
Don't get me wrong, both have been very very good. But Serong has been in superb touch for some time now.
It is hard to find praise from any of the media outlets and even so from our supporters.
Have we forgotten just how good he has been since we recruited him?
He has silky smooth hands, is always at he in and under. Makes many many plays from winning clearances, contested possessions around the ground.
He is always one of the first to fly the flag when there is a blue.
He is as vital a player as Brayshaw and Brodie.
I just love the way the kid plays the game.

I was thinking the same. Serong was huge last night and the second half against Melbourne.

I think it was you that theorised in the AFL that you ideally need a back up ruckman to the star that is good enough to come in get the job done but not so good that he will get poached by another team. Like Griffin did for Sandilands big Meek can do the same for Darcy.
My thoughts exactly. Jono Griffin was a solid ruckman. Tried his guts out too. Always filled that main Ruck role when Sandilands was injured.

Meek is similar to Griffin. He is a solid ruckman. He is filling his spot well when Darcy is injured.

Meek was a late pick in that 2017 draft. I am still surprised he had to wait until 2021 to get an AFL debut game.

If he wasn't injured at the end of 2019, he would of got a debut game vs port in Adelaide at that final game of that season.

Still shocked he didn't have a couple of games for the Dockers in 2020, unless he was injured.

I think what happened is a change of role from last year. He’s back to being the defensive first mid which isn’t as flashy as the other roles but just as important. That knee injury clearly hampered him the first 6 weeks of the season but he’s been in career form the last month

He was literally singled out in the AFL Website's '6 Things We Learned' article yesterday arvo.

'Best hands in the comp'

Funny you mention that Cameron Ling gave him a huge wrap on his podcast last night. Reckons he is the best pick so far from the 2019 draft.

Speaking of the Serong / Andy duo, is this going to be one of the very rare occasions that maybe dual captains is the best result? I can see those two absolutely frothing at the idea of captaining together

You need a breather, first Mundy is slowing down and now Baeshaw to share his (future) captaincy.

Oof.

Banfield-

He's our whipping boy, we love to hate him but no more ( for me).

After hearing him speak after the game I'm now a massive fan. He really is the top bloke we've all heard about. He just wants what is best for the club and if he's not in b22 he's okay with that and knows he has work to do. If we nursed the ultimate plodder but good bloke in McManus for 228 games I'm happy to do the same with Banfield.

Go Banners!!

I wonder why it never occurred to anyone on the Lions coaching panel to, maybe, play someone a little tighter on Freddie? Amazing how much space Brisbane gave him.

It looks like Freddy is being coached to try get himself one out on the fat side wing. When we switch play his speed
makes him unbeatable. Put the ball wide of him or over the top for him to run onto and opposition can’t stop him.
It’s very difficult to shut him out when he positions himself like that.
Brisbane don’t have any player anywhere near Frederick’s speed.
I reckon opposition coaches will be planning on how to counter him from now on.
I can’t see him being double teamed if he stays on the fat side.

Aish was so good I didn't even realise who was playing without his traditional long-sleeve jumper after halftime...he got a sleeveless replacement, which is hella rare!!

I wonder if Freo are going to auction the Aish & Ryan “ripped styled” jumpers ?.

Would go well with the ripped jeans.

That's exactly the problem he creates. If they play tighter on him, creates a bit more space in the middle.
