Today raises questions about Teague's ability to do more than coach a forwardline. He is not a great midfield coach and has demonstrated no aptitude to get the team switched on from the first bounce
this assessment after how many games?

harry mckay? you dont remember last year when we were all crying out for him to get a game, but then after a few good performances he was selected and we havent looked back since, kerr hasnt done that yet, and lang was bog for the northern blues the last 2 games in the vfl, not sure what you're talking about lol
Harrys form in the two's was average at best he was promoted on potential of which I agreed with I am a big fan if you know my posting history .
Lang is conditional today again proved yet again being the case .
Certainly don't think he's been bog last 2 weeks .
Setterfield played 2's after suspension then promoted on average reserve form O'Brien dropped then promoted again on very average reserve form .
Polson another example early in season .
It's regular as long as you are young and have potential your a good chance of senior selection .
Form is not the deciding factor ...

Agree McGovern is below where he needs to be, but want to see him fit and with a full preseason under his belt before writing him off. That said, surely he'd have been dropped by now if all of our talls were fit -- it'd basically come down to him or Levi, who's been among our best for a decent stretch now. Coaches seem to think he's doing an important job organising the forward line though, so who knows? Levi aside, we don't have much experience up forward, so it's hard to know how well our structures would be holding up if he was out.

Slow starts does not equal lack of effort. Melbourne were constantly shrugging us and able to get away a next possession all the first half. Another pre season or two and tackles stick, bodies hold their ground.
The running capacity that this group has will not go away as they develop some “man strength”.
Soon we will be the ones owning the ball inside and running the game out.

It’s a long game, we are tracking very well

Would have thought that's pretty self-explanatory?

Soft frees are correct, but in an ideal football world, or finals, maybe the umps would let them go. But you can't really complain about them.

Inconsistent are when the umpires change their interpretation of the same actions ie are not consistent. Also not fair.

Incorrect are when the umpires get their decision completely wrong.

Read through the game day thread. They made some mistakes, but we made alot more. ALOT MORE!

Just easier to blame the umps eh.

I’m not blaming the umpires for the loss but they certainly didn’t help. If the first poster I quoted is accurate and they had a hand in 12 Melbourne goals then it’s time to start asking questions. If you can’t see that then I’m not sure which game you’re watching

In 1st half, Jones flew for a mark, came close to another head clash. Seemed a little apprehensive after that.

Do you get paid by the AFL to defend the umpires? How much do you get? Is it a lot or a little? Do you get piece work... you know, 50 cents for every post that you reply to defending the actions of the umpires or putting down the person who makes a comment accusing the umpires of being corrupt, incompetent, or just plain useless?

Am i correct in thinking Jones is as mobile and quick as Plow?
If so, it might be worth exploring playing Goddard at FB, and Jones in Plows position; didn't like Plows seeming lack of intensity today

I take no solace from our effort in the last quarter. The lack of effort for most of the first 3 quarters is the real issue.

We were back to protecting space & 109 more disposals to the Demons by 3/4 time was an indictment on the poor work rate from the majority of our players.

Jones was absolutely horrible in defence today. What he displayed was more like 2018 than the first half of this season when he was in AA form. By my reckoning he conceded at least 8 goals. I'm a little bit puzzled as to why Teague didn't move him forward & send the struggling McG back to get his hands on the ball.

That turnover from Simmo, with less than 2 minutes on the clock, was appalling. You are in front by less than a kick, you have ball in hand, you kick the absolute crap out of it, so it ends up 100 metres from the opposition's goal. Then the opposition have to win the next couple of contests to even have half a chance of getting a shot on goal. You would like to think our most experienced player would get this.

There were few positives to take from this game, but credit needs to be given to JSOS, Levi, Setters, Walsh, Kennedy & Weiters.

I thought JSOS was our best player, doing most of our heavy lifting in the 1st half & then hitting the scoreboard when playing forward later on. I have noticed over the last 2 weeks he has improved his set shot kicking. He is not leaning back as much when kicking for goal, resulting in him getting more momentum through the ball. Good on him for working on this. In the space of a couple of weeks I think he has gone from fringe player to best 22.

Levi's 3 goals kept us in with a 'sniff' & he was competitive in the ruck while Kreuzer was off the ground being tested for concussion.

Setters gave us another goalkicking option to cover for McG's lack of impact on the game. He is another whose kicking for goal has gone from 'look the other way' stuff to being a better than even chance.

Walsh really battled on strongly after a slow start. It is clear the opposition are putting more time into him. Despite this, he really willed his way back into it & he had a big hand in us getting back into the game.

For the 2nd week in a row Kennedy has proven to be a good leading option in the forward line. Another 2 goals this week & an overall 6 shots on goal has made him an important part of our team, moving away from the 'bomb it long' to the big blokes all the time.

Realistically, without Weiters strong defence in the first 3 quarters, we wouldn't have been within 'cooee' of the Demons. It was a shame to see him badly hurt (his nose looked to be severely bent). He would have been handy in the dying minutes of the game.

Looking to next week, with hopefully at least Cripps & Harry coming back, I see no further point in sitting Dow in the forward line where he is struggling to get near it. Time for him to have a run in the midfield in the VFL & get his confidence back. I also think that McG might have run out of chances. Today he never looked like it & his only shot on goal was a bad miss. If Weiters doesn't get up, this could create an opportunity to see what Goddard can bring to the plate.

I’m a Plowman fan but that contest in the dying moments when he was sitting underneath the ball and just watched it hit the deck was truly bizarre
Yeah but his other spoils were massive and kicking much better, that daisy cutter to JSOS was awesome kick

setterfield and o'brien both got games because we had no one else to bring in besides a well underdone cottrell and kennedy who has been injured majority of the season or he's been held back for an emergency. and both games the northern blues saw lang as bog iirc

I was there live and watched McGovern closely. This bloke better have a fairly decent injury as from my viewing he looks lazy and disinterested. His leading patterns are literally non existent and when he gets the slightest contact in a marking contest he flops. In my view we have no room for a conditional, soft footballer with no work rate, no intensity and absolutely no competitiveness. Jack made him look like an absolute trout when he went forward. Kennedy lead up all day to provide a contest and setterfield got in the right spots. McGovern was and is currently useless. Trading for this flaky third tall was a mistake...an absolute mistake. Time to get more blokes who have a crack when it's not on their terms

Id like to see Kerrs speed i dunno if he would be able to lock the ball in or apply pressure? Maybe thats his knock?
Has been working hard on his speed and agility around the forward line... isn't quite as mobile as McG, but he can lead fast and strong at the ball! He can apply pressure well and locks the ball in nicely to boot. Still has a bit of a tendency to drift in and out of games. That being said, I would give him a run in the seniors so that people could see how he is coming along.

I would like to apologize for being wrong earlier when I stated that 12 of Melbourne's 15 goals were from free kicks.

From Champion Data;

"Melbourne's 11 goals is the highest number of goals to a team this year where a free kick to thr scoring team was included in the goal scoring chain. This beats West Coast's 9 in their round 11 win against the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium. Conversely, 5 of Carlton's 15 goals included a free kick in the goal scoring chain"

IMHO -- this is another game whereby we played so poorly as to enable a statistic like this to have a significant impact on the result of the game.

As many of you have said, you need to be good enough to win a game regardless of the umpiring. We're just not quite there yet. We will be.

Horrid showing for three quarters. Melbourne being so wasteful and ordinary kept us in what really should have been a 10 goal lead by halftime.

Couple of blokes were straight up garbage today. Jones, McGovern and Plowman in particular. McGovern doesn’t deserve to wear the jumper with the pissweak efforts he puts in each week. Plowman’s decision making and awful effort in the centre of the ground late cost us big time. Jones ran around like a headless chook.

Silvagni excellent. Walsh excellent too.

Disappointing that so many players didn’t rock up until the fourth quarter. Another game lost because the effort and skills aren’t there for big periods. Sick of this happening every week.

With Setterfield it feels like one step forward, two steps back. Was good last week. Kicked a few goals today but corral he was terrible. Needs to learn to attack the footy harder. If he can’t do this it’s going to be a big problem for his career.

Great summary. Our back line, headlined by Plowman and Jones, was horrible today. Their dinky little kicks in the first quarter, lack of effort and then Jones topping it off by leaving his man and then running into an open goal, not to mention Plowman’s piss poor effort in the dying minutes in the centre. Plowman needs a spell. He has been rubbish for two years now
