No Change

GCFC has announced an unchanged side for the club’s Round 2 VFL clash against last year’s VFL home and away runner up Williamstown at 2.00pm on Saturday at Merrimac Oval.

Gold Coast Senior Coach Guy McKenna said the team deserves every chance to find on-field cohesion so in the absence of any injuries he was happy to give the Round 1 team another run.

“We have two first-up home games so it’s a good opportunity to look at the boys again and settle the side down. It takes time for team mates to get used to playing next to each other. So the idea is to give the boys two games together before we head to Melbourne for the Anzac weekend night game against Werribee,” he said.

Williamstown - aligned with AFL club Western Bulldogs - is considered a 2010 VFL flag contender. Its Round 2 team is expected to include several players with AFL games under their belts - among them Nathan Eagleton, Dylan Addison, Jarrad Grant and Tim Callan – as well as a number of players on the Bulldogs list.

“They’re an aligned club, and you’d probably expect them to be a top four side. They’ll definitely present another challenge for our group,” McKenna said.

Although pleased with his team’s intensity during last week’s loss to Port Melbourne, McKenna says he hopes for a more even effort in Round 2.

“One of the things that really stood out for me last week was that individually we did some really great things during the game, but collectively we were a little disjointed at times. Hopefully that’s an area where we can pick things up.”

He also foreshadowed a more consistent defensive effort.

“Our defenders had to contend with fifty one forward entries last week. So I’ll be looking for a bit more defensive pressure through the middle and up forward.”

“In many ways the team set a standard last week. Now we need to see if the boys can back up and perform consistently.”

• The GCFC squad includes seven Queenslanders, two South Australians, three Northern Territorians, two Tasmanians, two Western Australians and eleven Victorians.
• Merrimac Oval is home ground to AFLQ club Broadbeach AFC. Full forward Nathan Ablett and midfielder Luke Shreeve should feel right at home – both have played for ‘Broadie’. St Kilda star Nick Riewoldt and Melbourne young gun Ricky Petterd also played with the club at junior level.
• Williamstown finished second on ladder after the 2009 VFL home and away season with 13 wins and 5 losses.
• Keep an eye out for ’27 year-old veteran’, Daniel Harris, who was GCFC’s best last week. The former Kangaroo kicked four goals, was tireless at the stoppages and led the home side’s tackle count.
• Yellow-booted forwards Rex Liddy (from FNQ) and Northern Territorian Liam Patrick were electric at various times against Port Melbourne. If this week’s game opens up, both should feature strongly.

Don't think there would be any coverage of this game , but keep an eye on Liam Patrick , cousin of Melb's Jurrah , exciting player.

If that was the small aboriginal forward he did look good. Pretty scrappy game and Williamstown only played one decent quarter.

Wow pretty disapointing, but again I guess we have a lot more to go... Hopefully we improve within the season.
It's not too bad - don't forget that Williamstown is a perrenial VFL powerhouse club and is once again a definite premiership contender. They thrashed the Pies reserves the previous week.

Harris and 'my man' (ex Pie) Stanley played well.

RD 2 Match Report - COAST OVERRUN AS SEAGULLS FLY AWAY WITH POINTS
By: Leigh Philpot

Williamstown overcome some dogged resistance from Gold Coast to eventually power to a 35 point win at a windswept Merrimac Oval on the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Gold Coast troubled Williamstown for the majority of the match, and trailed by only nine points at three quarter time, but were overrun in the last quarter as the Seagulls took advantage of a tired opponent and a howling wind to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Matthew Little backed up his seven goal haul in Round 1 with five goals, and was ably supported by Liam Jones who kicked four.

Gold Coast were exposed for a lack of height in defence, and coach Guy McKenna acknowledged that he was aware of the problem heading into the season.

“That is an area we identified a long way out and it’s an area we need to shore up,” he said.
“But we have got to deal with it, (we’ve got) Josh Milani, Jack Stanley and Jake Crawford (who can) certainly play in a defensive post.”

Once again, McKenna was happy with the entire team effort, but young Tasmanian Maverick Weller provided good drive off the half back line, and Michael Coad backed up his effort last week with another fine performance. Brandon Matera was busy on the wing, and set up a couple of goals in the third quarter and Alik Magin was lively in the forward line and finished with three goals.

For Williamstown, Little and Jones were a handful down forward, Brett Johnson provided good drive from the midfield, and Andrew Hooper, Peter Faulks and David Stretton were handy.

The win was somewhat soured with what looked to be a serious knee injury to Western Bulldogs listed player Tim Callan.

After two home games, Gold Coast face their first road trip of the year as they head to Melbourne to take on the Werribee Tigers on Saturday night, whilst Williamstown have a home clash with Sandringham to look forward to.

Maverick the real deal

WHEN your coach played 267 AFL games in defence, you are never going to complain about being sent to the back line.

Not that it bothers Gold Coast Football Club rising star Maverick Weller in the slightest.

The 18-year-old Tasmanian sensation played most of his junior football in the midfield and at half-forward.

But GCFC coach Guy McKenna has thrown Weller down back early in the VFL season with immediate success.

Weller, who is developing in to a reliable utility, was the GCFC's best on ground in the club's 16-17 (113) to 11-11 (71) loss to Williamstown at Merrimac Oval on Saturday.

"I haven't played a lot of footy there but in saying that I haven't played a lot of footy at all," said Weller.

"I don't mind playing down back.

" `Bluey' (McKenna) reckons the back pocket is the position to play because he played there and is now in the AFL Hall of Fame. He loves to give himself a wrap."

McKenna was quick to praise Weller's performance.

"I know Mav can play forward and the midfield," he said.

"But he has gone down to half-back and even full-back at some stages today. He fought above his weight division and did a fantastic job and stood out."

Weller said it has been a challenging step up the VFL for the playing group.

But he backed the team to break through for their first win soon.

"Playing anywhere out there in the VFL, you have to be very disciplined," he said. "Going from school footy to the VFL is a big jump, not a shock, but a wake up.

"I think the boys will improve every week and it's pretty exciting."

The Coast were down by just nine points at the last change against the Seagulls.

But Williamstown booted six goals to two in the final term to see off the Coast.

Goalsneak Alik Magin booted three goals while Luke Shreeve kicked two.

Michael Coad was again strong in defence, while Brandon Matera, Danny Stanley and ruckman Zac Smith also impressed for the Coast.

Missed the first quarter. The second and third were pretty scrappy and your smaller mids were on top and had most of the run. Last quarter Williamstown turned up to play and kicked away.

I've been to both games and IMO you can already call which guys are going to struggle to hold their possies once the next preseason starts and the new batch of 'guns' are added to the squad. (I know they are only 17-18 but...) ie there is 'half' an AFL team there and it is being proven by the fact they have kept up with 2 of the stronger VFL teams and been very competitive for most of the two games.

I think it will be much the same next year once some top picks are added and 1-2 'steals' from other clubs. I don't think it will take 4-5 years before a top 4 scenario though. If they are well chosen and well developed, it could be top 4 within 2-3 years.

I think they will need to target a key forward at the end of the year. Can't believe Tippet didn't go for it.
