Can you tell me how many times they played on each other? I'm serious, I don't know, and I don't think anyone else does either.

Saad had a great game, so did the 3 forwards and 6 midfielders that constantly went back into defence. What did they do there?
Weiters: "I hope you're prepared for the right royal bollocking you're about to receive from Jim after today's effort."

I'll answer you rather than two peanut gallery members I blocked years ago:

If you know the ball is going to go somewhere a lot of the time, and that player is hard to stop in the direct contest - eg. breaks tackles, has speed, strength, read, whatever - you might find yourself in a position where your best move is to not try to get a hand on them, but to shutdown the quality and opportunity of where the ball goes next.

For a forward, you often drop a player in front and focus on pressuring the ball carrier. For a midfielder, you sit on their nearby team mates and get in the way of their exit from the stoppage, at the bare minimum sending them off on an angle, ideally on the wrong side for them to kick cleanly on. You have the defensive playmaker sit off them with space and time to react.

Tell me, how many times was Cripps able to exit a stoppage and get onto his right foot for a clean kick? 💡
C'mon jimmae. We won in a crap game but i think cripps was pretty handy. If we are quibbling that his 40 plus possesion game wasnt his finest 40 plus possession games who cares? We won. We all barrack for the same team.

For me it looks like we prefer to set up to make it a 50/50 contest with no potential blow outs .. one positive was after the 1st we came out and put structure behind the ball and wrestled the game back into a our game where eventually we out muscled them .. if not for skill execution this game would of been a blow out .. more games together skills will improve .. 5 top mids will make a huge difference in skill post clearance ..
my only disappointment is I didn't have fish in that category of our bottom 6 this year .. I thought he and mots would really light us up post clearance and entry into fwd 50

Cerra is almost becoming underrated around here. Probably because he's never our best mid on the day but he's always going about his business and playing his role. A definite quiet achiever.

I don't think he'll ever be a prolific match winner or a purely dominant player but he's going to be a very good player for a very long time.

Happy with his game.
Was Cerra playing down back when Doc went into the middle?? I swear I saw him down back a lot, don’t want to have to watch that game again …. Anyone see who went back as a defender, not just all the wings

Even Slobbo chimed in....

NEWMAN GLOVE

Toby Greene’s five disposals was the fewest he’s ever had in an AFL match outside of injury. That was down to Nic Newman, who played Greene exceptionally. Everywhere Greene went the Blues’ hardman was there. Toby took a contested mark and kicked a crucial goal in the last quarter … but that was it. It was a brilliant stopping job on one of the form players of the AFL.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the HS's drunken chain-smoking illiterate essendon-loving bogan is not generally known for praising Carlton.

As a former drunken, chain smoking, illiterate bogan; I’d draw the line at being called Essendon loving.

No, but I also don't rate us completely writing him off. For what it's worth, I don't think the match committee has.

I wanted us to draft LDU over Cerra and Dow.

You and me both. I would have taken him over Rayner, Brayshaw, Dow and Cerra. Brayshaw has looked the best for a time there but now ... not so sure.

Haven't been this bored by a close game (and a win, for that matter) in a very long time. Saying that though, definitely happy with the result.

By the way, a fun little nugget... purely from a final score stand point, we've improved every game for the past 6 games.

Round 21, 2022: Lost by 33
Round 22, 2022: Lost by 5
Round 23, 2022: Lost by 1
Round 1, 2023: Drew
Round 2, 2023: Won by 8
Round 3, 2023: Won by 10

Heres to winning next week by a solid 12 points!

LOB came on early and could’ve proven his worth to play a full game. He had the chance and floundered it.
To be fair, almost every pass he received was either over his head or sprayed anywhere he wasn't, but yeah not a great game by LOB unfortunately.

As ugly wins go that was the ugliest! But we won. It’s almost like this team is trying to remember how to win. That or it just likes to give its supporters a heart attack week in week out!

Love my Blues but honestly fed up with going to emergency to get CPR …. the ambulance bills are killing me!

Silvagni was the only forward who managed to find space on the lead.

I honestly cannot for the life of me understand the calls that he isn’t best 22. Or that he’s only been playing due to the ruck situation.

He’s a very very good 3rd tall/medium forward. He’s not nearly as ‘slow’ as people make out.

I've just sat and watched the first 3 quarters that I only heard audio for while driving home. It has changed my perception somewhat.

1. The game wasn't as bad as I originally thought. We had a lot of discipline and application. It was just one of those games and the Giants do have a lot of classy players.

2. Cripps was far better than I first thought. I knew he got a lot of ball but how he did it didn't come across while listening. He really lead from the front and tried to bring his troops with him. I feel like he's covering the ground a lot quicker too.

3. Newman had a good game, but in those 3 quarters, he was on Greene in the 6-6-6 structure, but they were barely on each other in general play. I saw a few others stopping Greene as part of that zone defence. I kind of feel that the commentators were pumping up the lack of influence from Greene but the reality is, the ball hardly went near him. I will probably get push back on this. I feel Newman had a good game and while listening the first time, felt like he would be one of my best. Not near BOG for mine though.

4. Silvagni was all class. Gathered cleanly, competed in the air continuously, and found smart options. If ever a 19 disposal game could threaten a 41 disposal game for top honours, this was as good a chance as any.

5. Docherty stood up. His decision making was decent and his distribution good.

6. Ollie Hollands. Couldn't believe he only had 13 disposals. He touches the ball twice as much, but they don't count on the stats sheet. He's our little spot fire put-it-out-er. Gathers and takes hits over the boundary line. Always moving, always slipping into good spots for the outlet ball, always reading the play defensively and putting pressure on. He's a bloody terrier.

7. Acres. 2 good games in a row. He's come as advertised.

8. TDK offers so much more than Pittonet, although I like the idea of having 2 ruckmen in the side of differing styles. Also gives us the added benefit of a settled Silvagni.

9. Cerra. Love how often he is willing to take a hit in and under. He's working his arse off and not doing the flashy stuff.

10. Fisher just doesn't seem to fit anywhere in the structure, and he's not a great reader of where to run. A couple of good things, but he's playing like a fringe player. Look at Motlop and how hard he works getting up into the midfield and back forward again. I do give him credit for putting in when the game was in peril late in the last quarter.

11. LOB. All at sea. Defensively reactive and no confidence offensively.

12. Our pressure was consistently strong and our ability to close out games has improved.

I’m one of the aforementioned peanut gallery after a discussion Jim didn’t like a couple of years ago. Feeling is mutual by the way. He is steadfast in his beliefs and will never be moved once his convictions are entrenched. Whether there is actual, tangible evidence or not. Unfortunately for Jim, he chose our two best players in a hard fought win to critique this time and everyone sees it for what it is. He is an avid Blues man but, feels like he is smarter than the peasants.
